In this way, the search space for the scheduling algorithm is reduced to the feasible search space (taking into account the production unit constraints, product flow requirements and processing times). The algorithms developed are valuable tools that can be used in the design stages of such plants or as part of an intelligent software package that will totally control the plant in real time. The purpose of the model is to enable the mill manager to simulate the plant, answer what-if scenarios, meet the OWC (order-winning-criteria), and maximize profit. For the sample board mill discussed in the paper, the customer order winning criteria has been automated. The first on-line fibre measurement and control system has been built and installed. A wetlap thickness and dry board thickness controller has been designed and installed. The effect of this is that fibre quality and board thickness are no longer a function of operator opinion and diligence. The fibre imaging system has allowed the company to manufacture quality boards.

An alternative approach to conventional geometric based computer aided design systems is presented. Within this new approach manufacturing modes are used as the primary input to design. By directly actuating a simulation of machine tools and displaying the response of the material to this machine action, manufacturing constraints are captured at the design stage. Both manufacturing and design data can be generated concurrently, leading to reduction in prototyping development lead times. Geometric and physical models of the manufacturing process are combined to from a manufacturing simulation of the bending and forming process. Design trials are presented in which designers successfully used the design by manufacturing simulation approach to design metallic fastenings significantly faster than the traditional computer aided design approach.

The paper will describe a project carried out during the course of a Teaching Company Scheme at Chesterfield Cylinders Ltd., to evaluate the possibility of introducing Statistical processcontrol (SPC) to control cylinder quality. The paper will describe how the investigation indicated that SPC was initially inappropriate, as the cylinders could not be inspected until late in the manufacturing cycle. To overcome the problem the project used Pareto Analysis to identify the main quality problems. This was found to be cylinder eccentricity, which was introduced during the initial forging operation. The paper will explain how Taguchi Methods were employed to identify critical production parameters. To confirm the experimental results, laboratory tests using plasticine models were carded out. The paper will describe how they confirmed the findings of the Taguchi experiments.
