This paper presents the design and implementation of a digital processcontrol system for mechanical pulp refining. The system minimized the energy consumption of the refining process. A feedforward control scheme is used to regulate the disk position. In addition, the undesirable effects of measurable disturbances caused by the change of feed rate has been eliminated. This scheme has successfully improved the energy consumption of the refiner by 50% of the total energy delivered to the refining process. Furthermore, it has resulted in improved quality of the paper-making pulp.

Although the scientific personnel were advanced in the development and use of hardware and software for scientific applications, resistance to the use of automation or purchase of terminals, software and services, specifically for administrative functions was widespread. There was skepticism that automation would lead to more information gathering, more paper, extra work, loss of control, and ultimately less productivity. The perception was that the Center had a Management Systems Office that was responsible for the Center administrative databases that would meet most requirements. Although there were numerous complaints about timeliness of reports, inability to interact with the system and admittedly, using manual calculations from several reports in order to provide analysis was an archaic process for these times;there were generally negative reactions toward efforts to improve the situation.

The paper presents the application of Kalman filtering techniques to on-line state estimation and control of turbine start-up procedures. Automatic control of the turbine is important for time and money savings. The computer control systems usually require the mathematical model of process and some input data from the plant. The estimation techniques can be coupled with optimal control problems. The application of such a coupled problem to control the turbine brings about many problems, which are discussed in the paper.

This paper summarizes the experience gained during several studies of instrumentation revamp in refining and petrochemical processes. The major benefits of modern instrumentation come from advancedcontrol and process optimization, not from personnel reduction. General guidelines are given to help identifying areas with the best savings potential, sizing these benefits and assessing the risks of the implementation. The method is illustrated with examples from a recent study of a Crude Unit including furnaces, heat exchanger train and binary distillation. The methodology presented here applies also to similar projects in other industries.

This study outlines some major theoretical developments pertaining to man-machine systems, especially as related to computerized automation in such fields as processcontrol, nuclear power generation, manufacturing, aircraft piloting and traffic control, space and deep-ocean robotics. Some historical perspective is given, as is some discussion of ″classical″ quantitative and qualitative theory of the human operator. The study also anticipates the increased use of computers to run dynamic simulations or models of the actual controlled plant in order to aid the human operator in monitoring and diagnosis. A ″framework″ is presented for analyzing the operator's interaction with various models of the plant in addition to the plant itself.
