Pattern recognition methods, capable of intelligent decision making without a precise description of the process model have been used in many cases to implement advancedcontrol systems. Such techniques have been applied for structural identification of nonlinear systems, to direct control of systems operating in uncertain environments to quality processcontrol. Finally pattern recognition methods may be used to implement the higher levels of intelligent control systems where advanced decision making is required. An account of these techniques and their application to controls are given. Possible new applications to socioeconomic, bioengineering, transportation and robotic systems, man-machine interactive systems and other advancedautomation systems are discussed.

Complex interfaces for communication and accessing online process data are two typical plagues when integrating advanced applications into process industry plants. Examples of such advanced applications are process validation, online optimisation, advancedcontrollers, etcetera. Today's typical procedure is to either integrate the additional functionality directly into the particular automation system or to add it as an additional external system above the automation system level. The first procedure is often not feasible due to limited resources and restricted integration capabilitites of industrial automation systems. On the other hand, external solutions impose additional communication load and error proneness on automation systems. Also, the integarated required increases: communication failures, such as missing setpoints, need to be handled properly within the automation system in order to avoid loosing closed loop control and to fail back to automation system-internal strategies. These barriers hinder widespread usage of advanced applications. Thus, a different integration approach provides additional application functionality and data access directly on the field level. Fieldbus technology is an established technology providing standardised data access. In this paper, we present a flexible solution for easily realising virtual field devices hosting diverse applications (for instance, using common PC hardware).

This paper presents a model for integrating an advancedprocesscontrol library in a cloud-based environment. The aim is to lower the development times, to reduce maintenance effort and decrease the complexity of processcontrol applications by adopting a modular approach consisting of generic, reusable control strategies following an IEC 61499 representation. The solution uses open cloud technologies based on Heroku for the deployment in a public cloud structure and Docker for increased portability of the designed solution. This study outlines some major theoretical developments pertaining to man-machine systems, especially as related to computerized automation in such fields as processcontrol, nuclear power generation, manufacturing, aircraft piloting and traffic control, space and deep-ocean robotics. Some historical perspective is given, as is some discussion of ″classical″ quantitative and qualitative theory of the human operator. The study also anticipates the increased use of computers to run dynamic simulations or models of the actual controlled plant in order to aid the human operator in monitoring and diagnosis. A ″framework″ is presented for analyzing the operator's interaction with various models of the plant in addition to the plant itself.

The White Oak factory objective was to implement a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system providing full availability of all necessary data for yield analysis and processcontrol.
