The need for intelligent systems that can be important in the future trends. It is impossibly arrived at the goal, but be combined with multi sensor fusion. The potential advantages in multisensor fusion can be obtained more accurately, concerning feature that are impossible to perceive with individual sensors, as well as in less time, and at a lesser cost. The characterization most commonly encountered in the rapidly growing multisensor fusion literature based on level of detail in the information is that of the now well known triple low level (data level), medium level (feature level) and high level (decision level). The development of high-level multisensor fusion representations is very important, in order to construct advanced intelligent systems. The paper begins with review on the fundamental principles about high-level multisensor fusion, and has been employed in some applications in the object. Finally, we compare with the decision algorithms each other in the high-level multisensor fusion.

Many next-generation infrared space sensor systems are currently in the planning and development stages for a variety of advanced DOD, NASA, and commercial applications. These systems generally share a common theme: users and customers that demand uncompromising high performance, and sponsoring agencies that have rather limited budgets. This situation ultimately forces tough choices. Making informed decisions under these circumstances requires detailed and technically credible insight into the relationship between system performance and system cost. System-level performance must be linked to specific system architectures with well-defined infrared sensor payload, spacecraft, communications, ground, and launch system elements. In this paper we focus on a key system element: the infrared sensor payload. Altitude, resolution, sensitivity, and revisit time drive the weight, power, and design configuration of the sensor which in turn determines spacecraft sizing and launch system selection, hence the strong relationship to system cost. We have developed a linked payload model of an infrared short-wave/mid-wave infrared scanning point-source detection sensor for use in theater missile warning applications. The purpose of the linked model is to establish a credible technical relationship between sensor system performance and payload and payload subsystem weight, power and configuration.

In robotic deburring applications it is desirable to have sensor feedback. The control strategies for this sensor feedback have to be adapted frequently to work piece and work tool parameters. The paper discusses a method for transferring the skill of a human operator to a control strategy that can cope with these changes in parameters. The human skill is transferred by an indirect learning method. The human actions are modeled as an impedance controller whose parameters are adapted by observations of the deburring process state. The nonlinear relation between the process state and the controller parameters is learnt by a neural network. To apply this method it is necessary that the observations are independent of the controller actions. This is shown for an observation model that is derived from a process model for deburring and experimentally verified. Segmentation of the training data is done by analyzing the summed normalized innovation squared value of a static Kalman filter.

Target classification using sensors like electronic support measures (ESM) and identify friend or foe (IFF) is becoming an integral part of target tracking for air picture compilation and advanced air defence applications. In the past, tracking and classification problems were treated independently; here we develop a framework for treating these seemingly disparate problems in a joint probabilistic framework. We provide recursive relations for propagating and updating the joint density of target state and class, for which a numerical solution is in general required.

This paper aims at presenting a study of costs and performance concerning different multimedia communication techniques that can be employed in the context of the implementation of 2/sup nd/ generation remote video-surveillance systems using wired cable TV networks as a communication means. The multimedia information is acquired by video sensors and transmitted through the CATV network to a remote control centre, where a PC-based image processing architecture performs the image processing tasks needed by the implementation of the foreseen system functionalities. The paper will show some possible analogue and digital solutions to the problems concerning the real-time multimedia data transmission in generic cable-based AVS applications. Laboratory simulations of multimedia data transmission over upstream noisy channels have been performed in order to test the performance in terms of quality of the received images provided by the most advanced high-speed commercial cable modem systems.

Summary form only given. Recently we have demonstrated the generation of self-starting mode-locked pulses in a wavelength-swept fiber laser (WSFL). The mode-locking mechanism is an interplay between an intracavity scanning filter and the nonlinear Kerr effect in optical fibers. The wavelength of the output pulse is shifted from pulse to pulse over a wide wavelength range of over 30 nm around 1550 nm. Such unique characteristics are expected to be useful for many applications, such as sensor interrogations, device characterizations, and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems.

The Haptic Lens is a low-cost hardware and software device to enable the real-time visualization of the haptic sense of pressure. The device and supporting PC-based software enable the visualization and documentation of tactile input for applications such as robotic end-effectors, medical palpation, 3D digitizer, and a novel 3D clay input device for modeling. The sensor is actually a low-resolution 3D surface digitizer. It consists of an easily compressible translucent gray elastomer bounded on one side by an opaque white deformable membrane and on the other side by a clear rigid faceplate. Pressing an object against the white membrane while observing it through the elastomer, one observes a black and white image representing a 3D range or depth map of the applied surface under a specific pressure. The closer the white membrane is pressed to the face plate, the less gray elastomer the light has to pass through, the less attenuation to the image of the white membrane, and hence, the lighter that part will appear. Using a video camera and even illumination, a real-time digitized range image representing the 3D surface in contact with the membrane is produced. This is then converted to a real-time rendered 3D surface with special software.

In this paper the recent development of a high sensitivity high temperature Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) piezoresistive sensor technology that provides pressure sensing, temperature sensing, and feedback and bias resistor networks all integrated on a single miniature chip that measures only 0.23 cm software (90 mils square) is reported. This advanced sensor technology also provides sheet resistivities of approximated 3 times greater than conventional bulk silicon sensors while maintaining the same dopant concentration of the p-type resistor elements. The new chip design features a high impedance 30 K/spl Omega/ pressure bridge which provides a full scale output of 200 milli-volt per volt of excitation. This corresponds to a /spl Delta/R/R gage factor of 0.20. Also featured is a high impedance 60 K/spl Omega/ temperature bridge with an output sensitivity of 1.2 milli-volt per /spl deg/C per volt of excitation. This high temperature SOI sensor technology complements Honeywell's HTMOS high temperature electronics product line which provides both analog devices (including quad amplifiers and switches, fluxes, A/D's, and voltage references) and digital devices (including SRAMs, microcontrollers and clock generators) with operation up to 300/spl deg/C. This dual capability of high temperature sensors and high temperature electronics provides all the required functional blocks needed for designing complete sensor systems for an array of high temperature applications.

This summary aims at presenting an overview of the CEC-ESPRIT AVS-RIO (advanced Video Surveillance - Cable Television-Based Remote Video surveillance System for Protected sites Monitoring) project. The peculiarity of the project consists both in the video-surveillance application considered (i.e., the monitoring of tourist and naturalistic places), and in the communication mean used for the remote transmission of information from the observed sites to the remote elaboration centre, which is a coaxial cable network for local community TV broadcasting (CATV network). The multimedia information is acquired by video sensors (i.e., TV cameras) and transmitted through the CATV network to a remote control centre, where a PC-based high-performance computing network (HPCN) architecture performs the image processing tasks needed by the implementation of the system functionalities. The functional specifications of the system will be briefly exposed, together with the hardware/software tools needed for the system implementation.

Fiber Bragg grating sensor systems have wide application in the area of civil structures. The advantages of fiber grating strain sensors over electrical strain gauges such as greatly reduced size. EMI resistance, and higher temperature capability make them ideal choices for smart structure applications. Some of their fiber grating sensor systems can measure or detect multiaxis strain, transverse strain, temperature, bridge scouring, ice, and traffic flow.
