Optical fiber sensors, because of their small size, low weight, extremely high information carrying capability, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and large operational temperature range, provide numerous advantages over conventional electrically based sensors, Fiber-based sensors have found numerous applications in industry for process control, and more recently for monitoring the health of advanced civil structures. This paper presents preliminary results from optical fiber sensor designs for monitoring acceleration and magnetic field.

We are developing an optical sensor fa process control in basic oxygen steelmaking. The sensor measures gas temperature and relative CO/CO2 concentration ratios through the furnace off-gas during oxygen blowing. In the current configuration, the laser beam is transmitted through the process off-gas directly above the furnace lip and below the exhaust hood, and is undergoing field tests at Bethlehem Steel's Sparrows Point Division, Baltimore, MD. Rapid analysis of the detected laser radiation provides the input for real-time control of steelmaking processes. Dynamic gas composition and temperature information provided by this technique are being evaluated for optimizing variables such as lance height, oxygen flow, post-combustion control, and prediction of final melt-carbon content. The non-invasive nature of the optical sensor renders it robust, relatively maintenance-free, and useful for characterizing off-gas streams in general. Additional potential applications of the method are process control for electric arc furnace and bottom-blown oxygen steelmaking processes. Based on technologies developed for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Free-Flying-Magnetometer (FFM) concept,(1) we propose to modify the present design of FFMs for detection of mines and arsenals with large magnetic signature. The result will be an integrated miniature sensor system capable of identifying local magnetic field anomaly caused by a magnetic dipole moment. Proposed integrated sensor system is in line with the JPL technology road-map for development of autonomous, intelligent, networked integrated systems with a broad range of applications. In addition, advanced sensitive magnetic sensors (e.g;silicon micromachined magnetometer, laser pumped helium magnetometer) are being developed for future NASA space plasma probes. It is envisioned that a fleet of these Integrated sensor systems (ISS) units will be dispersed on a mine-field via an aerial vehicle (a low-flying airplane or a helicopter). The number of such sensor systems in each fleet and the corresponding in-situ probe-grid cell size is based on the strength of magnetic anomaly of the target and ISS measurement resolution of magnetic field vector. After a specified time, ISS units will transmit the measured magnetic field smd attitude data to an air-borne platform for further data processing. The cycle of data acquistion and transmission will be continued until batteries run out. Data analysis will allow a local deformation of the Earth's magnetic field vector by a magnetic dipole moment to be detected. Each ISS unit consists of miniaturized sensitive 3-axis magnetometer, high resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC), Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based data subsystem, Li-batteries and power regulation circuitry, memory, S-band transmitter, single-patch antenna, and a sun angle sensor. ISS unit is packaged with non-magnetic components and the electronic design implements low-magnetic signature circuits. advanced airborne sensor technology in support of Non-Cooperative Target Identification (NCTI) programs has been the subject of ongoing programs at Wright Laboratory for several years. Capitalizing on the freedom achieved via Global Position System (GPS)/Differential Global Position System (DGPS) technologies, research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) organizations can detach from ground-based systems and locate their operations at a multitude of suitable locations. Utilization of GPS-based position information coupled with a single combined downlink and control facility reduces the complexity and maintenance of a range system while increasing its reliability. Establishing a transportable system further frees the experimenter to deploy to a variety of locations as required under short notice. GPS/DGPS based systems also provide a path to functions other than pure RDT&E. They may be used to provide tools for mission planning, performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, DIS/HLA and other virtual theater platforms. Mission rehearsals can take place in a virtual environment, and the results or expected outcomes integrated into actual exercises via modifications to data sources and operational mode(s). The end product is a powerful, flexible, fully mobile testbed fully supporting RDT&E requirements for Wright Laboratories, as well as other U.S. and foreign research organizations. Termed the Mobile advanced Range Data System (ARDS) Control Station (MACS), the system has established a track record as an essential enabling technology for current test and evaluation applications. MACS is expected to have a cost-effective impact for future flight test applications as well. ©1998 IEEE.

Research and development is being conducted to produce advanced optical sensors for improved operation of Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOFs) used in commercial steelmaking. The work reported in this paper focuses on the development of optical sensors for measurements of bath and combustion zone temperatures, lance tip-to-melt distance, and furnace contouring from within the oxygen lance. These sensors, which are based on two-color imaging pyrometry and scannerless range imaging technology, respectively, have general applicability to other steelmaking applications, including Electric Arc Furnaces and Bottom-Blown Oxygen Processes. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are micron-to-millimeter size electromechanical devices that are fabricated using modified semiconductor batch-fabrication techniques. We believe that MEMS technology will have a significant impact on future space systems by (1) reducing the size, mass, power, and cost of individual sensors and actuators used throughout spacecraft and launch vehicles and (2) ultimately reducing overall spacecraft size. At the Aerospace Corporation, we are focusing on near and far-term applications of MEMS in space systems for reduced mass, improved performance, higher reliability, increased health and status awareness, and reduced life cycle costs. Specific tasks include the development of micro-propulsion technology for microsatellites (1-to-100 kg mass) and nanosatellites (1-to-1000 gram mass), the development of a flight-qualifiable GN&C (guidance, navigation, and control) unit using a GPS receiver and MEMS inertial sensors, and the development of a MEMS-based wireless multiparameter sensor. © 1998 IEEE.

The High Altitude Balloon Experiment (HABE) is being developed by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Space Vehicle Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base, to investigate technologies needed to perform acquisition, tracking and. pointing (ATP) functions against boosting missiles in near-space environments. HABE is designed to demonstrate ATP sequence steps that start with acquisition of a missile plume, transition through passive IR tracking of the plume, and handover to precision tracking which employs an active laser illuminator and imaging camera to image and track the missile nose. The Inertial Pseudo Star Reference Unit (LPSRU) provides inertially stabilized line-of-sights (LOSs) for the illuminator laser, active fine track (AFT) camera, and the marker scoring. The latter serves to measure and score the payload's pointing performance. The payload will be operated and carried aloft under a large, scientific balloon. The engagement parameters and timelines for the HABE ATP payload are consistent with scenarios encountered in space-based missile defense applications. In HABE experiments, target missiles will pass at ranges from 50 to 200 km. The performance goals of the ATP payload's LOS stabilization and marker laser pointing are required to exceed 1 microradian RMS or better in jitter, drift, and accuracy (two axis, one sigma metrics), a requirement which stresses testing capabilities. This paper describes an integration and test program that verifies correct performance of the HABE ATP payload in its state-of-the-art alignment, stabilization, and tracking functions. In contrast to earlier ATP designs that used analog electronics for control systems implementations, the HABE control systems architecture employs multiple digital processors and coprocessors to measure sensor outputs and generate actuator commands. The simple and compact optical design of the recently proposed smart pixels with smart illumination (SPSI) concept allows an integrated emitter and detector array to dynamically and efficiently illuminate and sense remote objects with enhanced functionality. Each pixel can control its associated photodetector(s) illumination level or modulation characteristics through electronic feedback from the pixel's photodetector(s) to its emitter. Features include intensity compression and background subtraction on every pixel. The SPSI concept has several potential applications in sensor array technology including edge detection;focus and tracking sensors;dynamic spotlight tracking systems;tracking of objects in manufacturing;and ranging. The features of SPSI can be exploited in the writing and reading interfaces of page-oriented optical memory systems. The simple optical design coupled with the electrically integrated array of emitters and detectors allows for simultaneous sensing of all elements of a two dimensional array, with each pixel adjusting to maximize its sensitivity. The opto-electronic feedback in each pixel allows for adjustment for variation in reflectivity (or emission) across a memory material and maximization of each photodetectors' dynamic range. Differential sensing capabilities allow for precise detection of dual rail digital or analog signals. Pixel-by-pixel background subtraction can reduce the effects of scattering and crosstalk between pixels. The dynamic spatial structure of the illumination could play an integral role in adaptive error correction and encryption algorithms.

A new, photon-sensitive, imaging array, the active pixel sensor (APS) has emerged as a competitor to the CCD imager for use in star and target trackers. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has undertaken a program to develop a new generation, highly integrated, APS-based, multipurpose tracker: the Programmable Intelligent Microtracker (PIM). The supporting hardware used in the PIM has been carefully selected to enhance the inherent advantages of the APS. Adequate computation power is included to perform star identification, star tracking, attitude determination, space docking, feature tracking, descent imaging for landing control, and target tracking capabilities. Its first version uses a JPL developed 256×256-pixel APS and an advanced 32-bit RISC microcontroller. By taking advantage of the unique features of the APS/microcontroller combination, the microtracker will achieve about an order-of-magnitude reduction in mass and power consumption compared to present state-of-the-art star trackers. It will also add the advantage of programmability to enable it to perform a variety of star, other celestial body, and target tracking tasks. The PIM is already proving the usefulness of its design concept for space applications. It is demonstrating the effectiveness of taking such an integrated approach in building a new generation of high performance, general purpose, tracking instruments to be applied to a large variety of future space missions.
