This paper will describe in some detail two new large area CCD image sensors designed specifically to be used either as a single imager or assembled in mosaics of CCDs. The devices have 2048x4096, 15 mu m pixels;the difference being the orientation of the serial register. Performance data are presented on both front- and back-illuminated parts. In addition, a new production camera test system will also be described which is being used to screen test the advanced Camera CCDs for the Wide Field and High Resolution Channels.

To meet the need for continuous, automated monitoring of animal subjects, including humans, during space flight, NASA is developing advanced physiologic sensor and biotelemetry system technologies. The ability to continuously track basic physiological parameters, such as heart rate, blood pH, and body temperature, in untethered subjects in space is a challenging task. At NASA's Ames Research Center, where a key focus is gravitational biology research, engineers have teamed with life scientists to develop wireless sensorsystems for automated physiologic monitoring of animal models as small as the rat. This technology is also being adapted, in collaboration with medical professionals, to meet human clinical monitoring needs both in space and on the ground. Thus, these advanced monitoring technologies have important dual-use functions;they meet space flight data collection requirements and constraints, while concurrently addressing a number of monitoring and data acquisition challenges on the ground in areas of clinical monitoring and biomedical research. Additional applications for these and related technologies are being sought and additional partnerships established that enhance development efforts, reduce costs and facilitate technology infusion between the public and private sectors. This paper describes technology transfer and co-development projects that have evolved out of NASA's miniaturized, implantable chemical sensor development efforts.

Using advanced laser mask projection methods it is possible to manufacture miniature complex 3D structures in polymers and ceramics for sensor and micromechanical device prototyping or mass manufacture. Subtle movements of workpiece and mask (separately or together) during processing allow complex devices to be realized. Multilevel sensor structures can be constructed using lamination techniques. The full capabilities of laser micromachining techniques are explained in detail and a example of novel 3D structures made by laser machining are shown.

The basic physical principles underlying three common techniques for the vicarious calibration of the post-launch performance of meteorological satellite sensors are briefly reviewed. The techniques considered are: (a) using ''radiometrically stable'' desert calibration targets which yield relative degradation rates;(b) congruent path aircraft/satellite radiance measurements which yield absolute calibrations;and (C) radiative transfer model simulation methods which yield absolute calibrations. The applications of the three techniques will be illustrated, using the visible( Channel 1: approximate to 0.58-0.68 mu m) and near-infrared( Channel 2: approximate to 0.72-1.1 mu m) channels of the advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR) flown on the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites(POES) as an example. The establishment of inter-satellite calibration linkages, and cross-satellite sensor calibration will be briefly mentioned.

Among neutron imaging techniques, computed tomography represents the most powerful tool when an accurate two-dimensional mapping of the internal structure of an object is desired. In order to exploit the capabilities of this technique, it is necessary to develop a detection system able to acquire the required projections with an enhanced spatial resolution and sensitivity. This could be achieved by the use of novel CCD sensors, but they are not yet available in commercial cameras. Thus, a modular system for the readout of CCD sensors was constructed allowing a East data acquisition and a simple camera that could be easily upgraded by simply replacing the active sensor has been built. The entire system was used to acquire projections for neutron computed tomography, offering good performance spatial resolution and data transfer rate. A numerical evaluation of system performances when performing NCT is given by the analysis of sample objects.

The Integrated Optics Rotation sensor (IORS) is a rugged, lightweight, and low cost gyro instrument which is currently being sponsored by the Defense advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under funding from Small Business Innovative Research/Technology Reinvestment (SBIR/TRP) Program. It uses glass-on-silicon optical waveguide technology. The design of the IORS is quite simple, and can potentially be adapted to a number of military and commercial applications, including yaw rate sensing for an antiskid safety device in automobiles, rotation rate sensing for robotics, weapon aiming, and guidance of smart munitions. The basic design is presented, along with preliminary performance specifications for an IORS prototype. The characteristics of the IORS is also compared to other gyros in terms of performance, size, weight, and price.
