A general need exists for inexpensive finite-area transducer arrays which intrinsically combine acoustic or vibration sensing with area actuation. Such combination transducers are particularly needed in active sound and vibration control and smart-materials applications. Commercial areas of interest include advanced underwater, aerospace or robotic-sensing applications. To be economically attractive they must be relatively simple to manufacture from reasonable cost materials. One promising new technology for such applications is injection-molded 1-3 composite piezo-ceramics, pioneered by Material systems Inc. (MSI). This transducer material is well suited for use as the low-cost actuator component of such a smart actuator. The challenge of this study was to design an inexpensive accelerometer which could be injection molded along with the actuator as an interspersed array. This paper describes a monolithic accelerometer which is suitable for fabrication by injection-molding as an integrated co-formed actuator component. Experimental results are presented for actuator / accelerometer arrays and issues related to the design and use of accelerometers in close proximity to an actuator are discussed.

The Integrated sensor System (ISS) program is defining an Open System Architecture (OSA) for Radio Frequency (RF) electronics, which represent the largest portion of an advanced aircraft's avionics fly away cost. An integrated architecture is used to reduce costs in a number of ways, including time-sharing, centralization of resources, and reduction of the number of unique module types. The OSA approach extends these cost reductions by simplifying technology insertion, using well-understood standards, and increasing use of commercial hardware and software. This paper describes interim results. The work was funded by the Open systems Joint Task Force (OS-JTF).

Three-dimensional imaging provides important profile information not available with conventional two-dimensional image products. Profile information can be extremely valuable for industrial-inspection and remote target-characterization applications. In this paper, we discuss a novel imaging modality, called PROCLAIM, that utilizes the powerful constraint that opaque objects can be described by a two-dimensional surface embedded in three-dimensional space. Far-field Fourier intensity measurements are collected by flood-illuminating an object with a frequency-tunable laser and direct detecting the backscattered signal with a lensless sensor. This technique allows for precise, non-contact surface measurements, without the stringent coherence and mechanical stability requirements of related interferometric techniques. We present reconstruction results from simulated data and from laboratory measurements.

A new robot task design and management system has been developed for tool manipulation tasks done by a sensor-based robot. This design and management system can be used for all processes from teaching to task execution. A task description can be generated easily and intuitively by using graphical user interface, without precise geometrical workpiece models. Task conditions are inputted interactively by arranging iconized structured task components in accordance with the task procedure. A robot system to deburr the outside of an aluminum-cast workpiece was developed as one example of an application of this system. The results of a system evaluation experiment confirmed that the system enables the systematic task description and control of a task to be performed by a sensor-based robot system.

Summary form only given. This paper provides an overview of the rapidly developing field of precision fanning. The main precision farming applications commercially available today, including spatial soil testing and variable rate application of fertilizers, variable rate spraying, and yield monitoring, are first introduced. The key enabling technologies - GPS, microprocessor-based control systems, electronic sensors, GIS, and decision support systems - are then discussed, followed by an outline of the precision farming system of the future. A few pointers to more information on precision farming are also provided.

Further developments in robotics are closely connected to those of sensors. Cheap and accurate sensors with a high maintenance are the basis for "intelligent" robots. For these intelligent robots known, conventional but complex applications are much more easier as well as new applications are available not only in industry. A broad field for further applications is the service sector. Robots in the hospital, in the household, in amusement parks are some examples for service robots. Contrary to the present situation, where single purpose systems are dominating these application areas, the focus has to be on development of more modular structured systems for the future.

This paper presents an environmental acquisition strategy for a mobile robot using an advanced sonar sensor to achieve mapping navigation in an a priori unknown, imperfectly structured indoor environment. Most existing feature based strategies rely on unrealistic assumptions about the environment, while their grid based counterparts hinder localisation which leads to rapid degradation of map quality. A dual representation strategy is proposed here which exploits the strength of both a feature map and a grid map. With the advantage sensor, the environment is scanned and the obtained features are classified into planes, corners, edges and unknowns. The feature map is only updated with the first three types of features. The grid map is updated with all measurement, including the unknowns resulting from complicated objects, to enable obstacle avoidance. On the grid map, distance transform based exploratory path planning is implemented. Adaptation has been made so that an explore-local-first behaviour is exhibited.

There is an increasing interest in millimeter-wave radar sensors for automotive applications, besides passenger-comfort traffic-safety will be the main distinctive feature for car manufacturers in future markets. Radar systems at millimeter-wave frequencies allow small antennas with high resolution fitting well into the front of a passenger car. Over and above radar sensors for automotive applications like autonomous intelligent cruise control and collision avoidance radar open up a relevant volume market for millimeter-wave technology. In this paper the concept of an automotive imaging radar will be discussed. The sensor is a fully polarimetric, coherent 76 GHz radar having an electronically obtained lateral resolution based on a focal plane array concept. Using advanced GaAs-based circuits all the building blocks necessary for the realization of the radar have been designed, assembled, and tested. Furthermore the modules and the obtained results as well as the integration of the complete radar sensor will be described. A sequence of radar images of traffic scenarios has been measured and processed with specially developed algorithms.

This paper describes the technical challenges and the application of advanced control methodologies to meet the challenges in the design of servo systems for data storage devices such as hard disk drives (HDDs). Though an emphasis is on control applications to hard disk drives, the challenges and methodologies are broadly applicable to other precision machines. "Mechatronics" in the title emphasizes that the design of control algorithms for modern machines is not an isolated activity by control engineers in the development of products, which is indeed a synergistic integration of mechanical hardware design, sensor and actuator selections and control algorithms.

To meet the need for continuous, automated monitoring of animal subjects, including humans, during space flight, NASA is developing advanced physiologic sensor and biotelemetry system technologies. The ability to continuously track basic physiological parameters, such as heart rate, blood pH, and body temperature, in untethered subjects in space is a challenging task. At NASA's Ames Research Center, where a key focus is gravitational biology research, engineers have teamed with life scientists to develop wireless sensor systems for automated physiologic monitoring of animal models as small as the rat. This technology is also being adapted, in collaboration with medical professionals, to meet human clinical monitoring needs both in space and on the ground. Thus, these advanced monitoring technologies have important dual-use functions; they meet space flight data collection requirements and constraints, while concurrently addressing a number of monitoring and data acquisition challenges on the ground in areas of clinical monitoring and biomedical research. Additional applications for these and related technologies are being sought and additional partnerships established that enhance development efforts, reduce costs and facilitate technology infusion between the public and private sectors. This paper describes technology transfer and co-development projects that have evolved out of NASA's miniaturized, implantable chemical sensor development efforts.
