A smart-pixel cellular neural network with hardware annealing capability, digitally programmable synaptic weights, and multisensor parallel interface has been under development for advanced space sensor applications. The smart-pixel CNN architecture is a programmable multi-dimensional array of optoelectronic neurons which are locally connected with their local neurons and associated active-pixel sensors. Integration of the neuroprocessor in each processor node of a scalable multiprocessor system offers orders-of-magnitude computing performance enhancements for on-board real-time intelligent multisensor processing and control tasks of advanced small satellites. The smart-pixel CNN operation theory, architecture, design and implementation, and system applications are investigated in detail. The VLSI implementation feasibility was illustrated by a prototype smart-pixel 5/spl times/5-neuroprocessor array chip of active dimensions 1380 /spl mu/m/spl times/746 /spl mu/m in a 2-/spl mu/m CMOS technology.

sensor signal processing represents a very important tool to improve dramatically advance sensor performance. The design of a new low-cost microelectronic interface to process signals generated by both capacitive and piezoelectric sensors is presented and analyzed in this paper. The basic strategies developed in this project has previously been encountered during the development of dedicated piezoelectric analog processing circuitries for robotic applications. The authors are now trying to extend these design criteria and accuracy evaluation processes to a more general class of sensors in order to establish useful procedures able to optimize advanced sensor development using microelectronic technologies.

Integrated optoelectronic interconnects offer a potentially lower cost, higher density alternative to wire-based technologies for I/O and inter-chip communication. This paper outlines two systems being designed at Georgia Tech which incorporate integrated thin film optoelectronic devices onto high throughput VLSI digital processors. The first system places an array of thin film detectors on top of SIMD processing elements allowing direct area connections between sensors and processors. This allows extremely fast frame processing rates (1-10 thousand frames per second) which are required in high speed and scanned imaging systems. The second system presented incorporates inter-chip IR optoelectronic channels which pass transparently through silicon. These links allow communication between three dimensionally stacked chips supporting high throughput interconnect topologies. This paper demonstrates the potential of optoelectronic integrated VLSI systems for providing extremely dense and lightweight solutions in applications such as image processing.

The objective of this design is to implement an accurate and cost effective adaptive tracking controller for a DC motor using an 80C196kr microcontroller system. The on-chip embedded functions, optical quadrature encoder and a PWM waveform generator, are used to measure motor positions' and generate DC voltages to drive a DC motor respectively. A homing routine that incorporates a photoelectric sensor is used to position the motor at a reference point. Users communicate with the system through a 4/spl times/4 matrix keypad and 20/spl times/2 LCD display or through a PC. The experimental results have shown the validity of this simple microcontroller-based digital control system. This system is performed on a real-time basis, and the control law can be easily replaced by any advanced control laws without changing the hardware setup.

Presents a methodology which allows an autonomous agent i.e., a mobile robot, to learn and build maps of its operating environment by relying only on its range sensors. The maps, described with respect to the robot's inertial frame, are developed in real time by correlating robot position and sensory data. This latter feature characterizes part of the uniqueness of the authors' approach. These maps are topologically isomorphic to the maps created for the same room(s) by humans. The methodology exploits the principle of self-organization, implemented as an artificial neural network module which processes incoming sensor range data. The generation of environmental maps can be visualized as an elastic string of neurons whereby every neuron represents a finite portion of the physical world. This elastic string stretches dynamically so as to take on the shape of the environment, a unique characteristic of the authors' methodology. In this respect, the neural net provides a discretized representation of the "continuous" physical environment as the latter is seen through the robot's own sensors. Experiments, focused on indoor applications, have successfully demonstrated the ability of a robot to build maps of geometrically complex environments. The results presented in this paper, compared with the authors' earlier efforts, show significant improvement in that every single sensor data point contributes equally to the location of the neurons of the spatial map at the end of the learning process. This is important because the authors wish to minimize the effect of the order in which data points are processed.

Studies show that vigilance decreases rapidly after several minutes when human operators are required to search live video for infrequent intrusion detections. Therefore, there is a need for systems which can automatically detect targets in live video and reserve the operator's attention for assessment only. Thus far, automated systems have not simultaneously provided adequate detection sensitivity, false alarm suppression, and ease of setup when used in external, unconstrained environments. This unsatisfactory performance can be exacerbated by poor video imagery with low contrast, high noise, dynamic clutter, image misregistration, and/or the presence of small, slow, or erratically moving targets. The paper describes a highly adaptive video motion detection and tracking algorithm which has been developed as part of Sandia's advanced Exterior sensor (AES) program. The AES is a wide-area detection and assessment system for use in unconstrained exterior security applications. The AES detection and tracking algorithm provides good performance under stressing data and environmental conditions. Features of the algorithm include: reliable detection with negligible false alarm rate of variable velocity targets having low signal-to-clutter ratios; reliable tracking of targets that exhibit motion that is non-inertial, i.e., varies in direction and velocity; automatic adaptation to both infrared and visible imagery with variable quality; and suppression of false alarms caused by sensor flaws and/or cutouts.

Until very recently, the implementation of complex diver, ROV or AUV based dive missions was impeded by the lack of comprehensive mission supervision and control system. Instead, operators had to rely on a collection of non-integrated tools and methods such as underwater telephones, pingers and transponders, diver bubble tracking, mechanical measuring techniques etc. to coordinate and execute dive missions. This has changed with the introduction of DiveTracker DTX, a highly versatile dive mission control system. DiveTracker offers an integrated solution for tasks ranging from diver, ROV and AUV tracking and navigation to communication, telemetry, observation recording, sensor data acquisition, precision surveying and underwater computing tasks. Available components are a rugged, compact diver station, a bare module for mounting inside ROVs and AUVs, a submersible remote station and a personal computer based surface station. DiveTracker is a wireless system, relying on sonar for navigation and communication functions. The system is fully software programmable and is easily adapted to suit specialized requirements. This paper explores the DiveTracker architecture and characteristics. Performance parameters are reviewed. The paper concludes with a look at current DiveTracker installations and applications.

A cost-effective technology has been developed for producing 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composites for active and passive sonar applications. SonoPanel 1-3 piezocomposite transducers consist of an array of piezoelectric ceramic rods in a compliant polymer matrix. The standard composite consists of 15 volume percent PZT-SH rods 1.1 mm diameter/spl times/6.3 mm long in a matrix of soft polyurethane. Stiff face plates are then bonded to the 1-3 composite sheet for stress amplification when used as a sensor and to enhance the surface response uniformity when used as an actuator. Many variations on this composite design have been produced. The key technology in piezocomposite manufacturing is the PZT ceramic injection molding process. Using this process, an entire array of piezoelectric ceramic rods are molded in one operation using specially designed tooling. The process eliminates the need for handling thousands of individual PZT rods during composite manufacturing. Several thousand components with excellent piezoelectric properties and part-to-part reproducibility have been manufactured. The piezocomposite fabrication process has been successfully scaled up for low volume manufacturing. More than thirty 250/spl times/250 mm SonoPanel transducers have been produced and evaluated. The transducers have been tested by the Naval Research Laboratory and others, with high receiving voltage sensitivity and transmitting voltage response as well as symmetrical beam patterns. advanced panels for active surface control are also being developed by incorporating actuators, pressure sensors, and velocity sensors.

On the foundation of an existing system for sensor data integration into robot controls, a concept for flexible multisensor fusion and integration is designed and implemented. By means of three applications of different complexities, the efficiency of the software system is demonstrated. The system consists of a hierarchic structure with three levels and can be divided into the two main modules: Control and Sensing. By configuration of the topology, the methods and parameters of these main modules, the user can easily adapt the system for different applications in production. Thus the expenditure for installation, setting up and conversion of the multisensor system is reduced to a minimum.
