Computer-assisted interpretation of sensor data in a modern diagnostic system brings together various technologies, including signal and image processing, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence. In both biomedical and advanced manufacturing applications the complexity of the processes under investigation renders the task of automated classification difficult. A method for reasoning in the presence of uncertainty in essential to accomplishing this task effectively. Recently the theory of fuzzy sets and related uncertainty calculi have emerged as viable alternatives to traditional probabilistic approaches in some applications. This paper is a survey of methods employing some concept of fuzziness or degree of membership in the solution of pattern classification problems, and the potential role of these methods in diagnostic systems.

A distributed architecture for high-speed digital and analog instrumentation is discussed. This architecture supports the collection, formatting, recording of both conventional telemetry (analog & PCM) and high-speed digital data. Remotely located instrumentation data interface units provide data acquision close to the data sources. The remotely located units are connected via high-bandwidth fiber optic links to a central formatting and recording unit. Data is recorded on digital rotary head recorders. Graphic workstations provide visual data displays for test control and monitoring. This system was developed to handle the high-speed data acquision requirements of advanced avionics sensor and seeker systems, however, it provides the basis for many other applications.

Fiber-optic Rotation sensors (FORS) are all solid-state devices capable of measuring rotations and rotation rates in inertial space. They are intended to eventually serve as replacements for spinning mass systems and ring laser gyros in applications that place a premium on long lifetime, low-weight, low-power consumption and/or reduced costs. As such, they should prove particularly well-suited to space applications such as NASA's planetary programs. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Draper Laboratory (Draper), under NASA sponsorship, are in the process of developing a FORS with the intent of using it on the Comet Rendezvous/Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) and the Saturn-orbiting Cassini missions. Brassboard FORS have demonstrated the performance levels required for precision pointing and control of spacecraft, platforms, telescopes and advanced transportation systems. Preliminary tests of FORS solid-state opto-electronic components indicate that they are capable of meeting the reliability characteristics required for space usage. This paper describes the mission, Inertial Reference Unit (IRU) requirements, FORS instrument, and opto-electronic components requirements. An overview of the design of the FORS, as well as the results of overall instrument performance tests will be presented.

A contact image sensor is used as the position sensor for real-time control of a magnetic suspension system. The system contains a line light source and a linear photosensor array. The object to be measured is suspended between the light source and the sensor array. It acts as a mask to shade and shape of the light reaching the sensor array. No advanced optical system for light focusing and calibration is necessary. The mechanical adjustment of the measurement system is not critical, and the method is relatively economical. Results show that the sensor system is effective in real-time measurement systems for magnetic suspension control applications.< >

Two candidate sensor suites for a guided projectile are discussed. The projectile uses a millimeter-wave seeker for terminal guidance to a target. Various complements of gyroscopes, accelerometers, and seeker gimbal potentiometers are used to perform the target tracking, autopilot and guidance functions. The sensor suites are conventional, with three body-rate gyros, two gimbal-rate gyros, and two accelerometers (normal and lateral); and advanced, with three body-rate gyros, two gimbal-angle potentiometers, and two accelerometers (normal and lateral). The analysis addresses performance in terms of the target tracking error and impact miss distance. Covariance response to sensor biases and noises, as well as target motion and wind gusts, are presented. Robust performance, i.e., how much the nominal performance deteriorates in the presence of modeling uncertainty, is analyzed using the structured singular value. Model uncertainty due to inaccurately known aerodynamic characteristics and sensor transfer function errors is addressed.< >

Sensing for robotic applications has been a very active field of research in recent years, leading to the development of ever more effective and complex devices [1-3]. This has been particularly true of tactile sensors, where attempts have been made to improve a number of detector performance characteristics, such as dynamic range, linearity hysteresis, sensitivity and resolution. This work shows how dynamic sensing, using very simple sensors, can give details on the nature of an object that at present can only be found using complex and expensive systems. Initially a study will be conducted to determine the relative sensing abilities of robotic sensors, ranging from simple, but robust and reliable micro-switches, to the advanced tactile arrays. This will be analyzed in terms of their data gathering capacity, and using this information it is possible to make a comparison of the capabilities of 'static' and 'dynamic' sensing systems. Subsequently based on these predictions the performance of a 'dynamic' sensor will be tested and analyzed.

Recent progress in the millimeter-wave field will be summarized. In the technology area there are significant developments in HEMT solid-state oscillators and in passive component development. In the past several years there have been major investigations of atmospheric effects (scintillation and angle-of-arrival, backscattering from snow or rain, and other phenomena). These results have been collected in a special journal issue. In the subsystem area there also have been several new developments for use in radar and communications. In general, systemsapplications are occurring in satellite or air-to-air communications, missile/projectile terminal guidance, airborne synthetic aperture radar, and satellite or airborne radiometric imaging (remote sensing) and radio astronomy. Some major programs will be described, including the EHF MILSTAR satellite communications project, the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) terminal seeker, the Sense and Destroy Armor (SADARM) sensor-fused munitions, the Lincoln Laboratory synthetic aperture radar, the Longbow tactical missile system, the millimeter wave Maverick missile seeker, the Special sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) satellite radiometers, and the airborne advanced Microwave Precipitation Radiometer (AMPR).
