Range prediction for thermal imagers applying advanced signal processing is still in its infancy. Boost filters are such an advanced signal processing and here it was assessed if the achieved range when using them is in correspondence with predictions based on the Johnson criteria. Equipment in test was an under-sampled MWIR imager operating with and without five different boost filters, four different Laplace- and one Wiener-filter. Range of this imager using the different boost filter was estimated by perception experiments for identification of numbers. These ranges were compared with limiting frequencies derived from Minimum Temperature Difference Perceived (MTDP) measurements including the boost filters. The comparison showed identification range and limiting frequency derived from the MTDP in good correspondence. Thus, the Johnson Criteria should be able to correctly predict range for thermal imagers including boost-filtering. Further work includes extending the comparison to low contrast and to real targets.

Day-by-day, wireless devices and diverse radio services require extended spectrum. Additionally, sixth generation (6G) mobile communication systems that are introducing new challenging use cases, need deep focus on latencies, number of connections, and so on. Hence, the combination of advanced design and working methodologies leads to enhance the necessary infrastructure, that in some cases can incorporate satellite networks as well. Artificial intelligence (AI) technique has been applied for various electromagnetic devices aiming to accelerate their overall design and analysis. In recent years, this paradigm has brightened the way of their application for space applications as well. In this framework, the present paper discusses a review on machine learning techniques employed toward design of 3-D satellite networks where it provides the use cases, requirements and enablers for these networks. Most importantly, the AI technology is employed for estimating the dynamic radio channel, signal detection and demodulation, network security, predicting the microwave signal attenuation, recognizing appropriate beam hopping patterns, and also for increasing efficiency in the places with the dust and sand storms. By preparing this paper, the authors has targeted to clarified that developing state-of-the-art methods including AI techniques would be a fundamental step towards the development of high-dimensional satellite network systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Directional sensor networks (DSNs) are still receiving consideration in different fields of high-level monitoring applications. However, unlike traditional omni-directional sensors, directional sensors are characterized by a limited sensing angle, which causes various problems for satisfying the coverage quality requirements of a critical region. In this paper, a novel distributed algorithm is proposed to significantly improve the area coverage ratio using a DSN. Based on a directional sensor node model combined with geometry concepts, we provide each directional sensor with the ability to calculate the most appropriate working direction. This solution allows us to maximize coverage, in such a way to obtain a better surveillance quality in monitoring and control applications. To extend the network lifetime, redundant sensors are exploited to keep just a set of directional sensors in active mode. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively improves the area coverage ratio compared to the existing algorithms. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper investigates the application of Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems for rapid development and deployment of control systems. We present a case study of a smart plant irrigation system implemented using Volapu IIoT Suite, highlighting its advantages for low-cost and rapid development. The system leverages real-time sensor data (soil moisture, temperature) for rule-based control with the option to integrate weather forecasts for more informed decision-making. Volapu’s data interface enables the future incorporation of advanced data processing modules, facilitating the construction of higher-order control models. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Volapu IIoT Suite in facilitating the development of cost-effective and scalable IIoT control systems. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.

Thermal properties of refractory nanocomposites with embedded single-walled carbon nanotubes were investigated using proposed automated approach. In this approach, differences in nanocomposites with varying parameters, observed under temperature differentials and thermal loads, are highlighted. These findings are crucial for their integration into sensor systems and for applications requiring enhanced fire resistance. The results indicate that nanocomposites with a nanotube dispersion time of 2 hours exhibit a peak temperature difference of 55 'C, while those with a 1-hour dispersion time show a maximum difference of 50 °C. A comparative analysis of heat transfer dynamics suggests that extending the dispersion time by 1 hour increases fire resistance by 15%. © 2024 IEEE.

The presence of aging traces in transformer oil poses a significant concern for industries heavily dependent on power transformers, as it can potentially lead to breakdowns that disrupt critical business processes. This paper introduces a computational analysis study of a no-core fiber (NCF) sensor for detecting aging traces in transformer oil. Employing the Wave Optics Module in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5®, the computational analysis study delves into the efficacy of the no-core fiber (NCF) sensor in detecting transformer oil with refractive indices spanning from 1.46 RIU to 1.55 RIU, encompassing the typical aging range of transformer oil. The study explores various parameters, including electric field distribution, mode field diameter, and effective mode index, across a spectrum of refractive index (RI) values. The findings highlight the potential of the sensor for effectively evaluating and analyzing aging traces in transformer oil by observing the RI and electric field intensity changes. This research lays the groundwork for future applications of the sensor in real-time scenarios especially for high-RI implementation conditions, offering a promising avenue for enhancing the reliability and longevity of power transformer systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Six quantitative indicators of asymmetry of human gait, whose values can be estimated by processing data acquired using depth sensors, are considered. Procedures for the estimation of these indicators have been developed and tested using measurement data representative of typical gait and two types of asymmetric pathological gait. The results of the completed experiments indicate that among the considered indicators, the one based on the quasi-correlation between the speed of the feet allows for best differentiating among the three considered types of gait. © 2023 IEEE.
