This paper presents a study and analysis of a direct torque control strategy associated with a sliding mode control (DTC-SMC) without a speed sensor to control the four induction motors used for the propulsion of a four-wheel drive electric vehicle 4WDEV. The estimation of the rotor speed of each motor is obtained by a sliding mode observer SMO. The main objective of this control method is to increase the robustness and reduce torque and stator flux oscillations. The model is made using the Matlab / Simulink environment. The simulation results obtained show the effectiveness of the control strategy in terms of driving cycle trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection. © 2024 IEEE.

Enhancement of the vanilla generative adversarial network (GAN) to preserve data variability in the presence of real world noise is of paramount significance in deep learning. In this study, we proposed a new distance metric of cosine distance in the framework of optimal transport (OT), and presented and validated a convolutional neural network (CNN) based GAN framework. In comparison with state-of-the-art methods based on Graphics Processing Units (GPU), the proposed framework could maintain the data diversity and quality best in terms of inception score (IS), Fréchet inception distance (FID) and enhancing the classification network of bone age, and is robust to noise degradation. The proposed framework is independent of hardware and thus could also be extended to more advanced hardware such as specialized Tensor Processing Units (TPU), and could be a potential built-in component of a general deep learning networks for such applications as image classification, segmentation, registration, and object detection. © 2021 IEEE.

The amount and diversity of data generated by the sensors available on current Wearable Computing systems (WCS) impose the adoption of advanced, efficient (and often customized) data analysis methods, including Machine Learning (ML) / Artificial Intelligence (AI) and multi-sensor information fusion. With the diffusion of Cloud Computing and ARM/MCU architectures in the last decade, commercial WCS have gradually been introduced into the market, resulting in vertical solutions with poor pro-grammability, privacy, and smartness. To make WCS truly smart and Cloud/smartphone independent, we propose COCOWEARS: a framework for COntinuum Computing WEARable systems. COCOWEARS relies on (i) sound theoretical foundations with a hardware/software system co-design methodology based on simulations, (ii) tailored AI/ML algorithms, and (iii) development tools to enable the engineering of next-generation WCS. A use case about the monitoring of operators' activities within the smart factory is provided to exemplify our approach, which is, to our knowledge, the first solution fully exploiting AI technologies at different levels of granularity, complexity, and user proximity, able to push towards massive adoption of WCS in the immediate future. © 2024 The Authors.

In-sensor computing has emerged as a promising approach to mitigating huge data transmission costs between sensors and processing units. Recently, the emerging application scenarios have raised more demands of sensory technology for large-area and flexible integration. However, with thin-film technologies that are capable of providing flexible and large-area integration support, the implementation of in-sensor computing can be strongly restricted due to the low device performance, large-area integration variation, and costly interface between sensors and CMOS processors. To address this challenge, we propose an in-sensor computing architecture to facilitate high-parallelism NN pre-processing and effective data compression. The boundaries of computing parallelism are expanded by adopting compact ROM-based compute-in-memory scheme next to sensing array. Differential-frame computing provides not only excellent robustness, but also high data sparsity. A bio-inspired data compression method with residual recovery caches and zero-skip circuits further enhances output sparsity without accumulated error. Based on the proposed cross-layer design optimization, an LTPS TFT-based ROM CiM chip has been fabricated and experimentally measured. The system-level evaluation demonstrates 3.85× speedup and 5.10× energy efficiency improvement compared with traditional architecture with separated sensors and processors, outperforming existing in-sensor computing works in large-area thin-film technology scenarios. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Distributed fiber optic sensing is a cutting-edge technology that has found extensive applications in the monitoring of pipelines. Among them, distributed acoustic sensors, phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) is a versatile technology that can continuously detect external perturbations and provide spatial and real-time information along the kilometer lengths of sensing fiber. Considering the low backscattering level of standard single-mode fiber as fiber under test, a Rayleigh-enhanced optical fiber embedded within the tight-buffered cable is demonstrated in field testing. We analyzed the increased backscattering fiber cable's vibration performance to the conventional single-mode telecom fiber using a custom-built Phi-OTDR interrogator system. Thereafter, using a 4-inch steel pipeline with a flow rate of 5, 10, 15, and 20 ft/s and a fixed pressure level of 1000 psi, we field-tested the sensor system for monitoring natural gas pipeline acoustic vibrations. We also field-tested the Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) system for pipeline hoop strain monitoring under various pressure conditions. The pilot-scale testing results presented in this study suggested that pipeline operators can accurately perform flow monitoring, leak detection, and pressure monitoring for pipeline integrity monitoring.

Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANETs) are mainly composed of minimum power gadgets dispersed over remote locations. Clusters of sensors are arranged. Each cluster identifies a crucial node called a cluster head (CH). To communicate the acquired data to a base station (BS), each CH gathers it from its sensor node. sensors with non-replaceable batteries have been utilized. For MANET, energy consumption is a critical problem. We suggest an improvement strategy to lower energy consumption and improve network lifetime. The energy dissipation during network communications has been reduced by improving the energy balance in clusters across all sensor nodes. A cluster head selection method is the foundation of the enhanced approach. Additionally, an updated TDMA schedule has been put into place. Results from MATLAB 2015a simulations and mathematical analysis demonstrate the feasibility of the suggested strategy. MANET's energy usage has been lowered by about 60%, and the network life cycle has been extended by 73%. © 2023 IEEE.

This study explores the efficacy of machine learning and classical time series forecasting models in predicting COVID-19 case counts, addressing a critical global health challenge. We compared four models - Holt-Winters, ARIMA, Facebook Prophet, and XGBoost - across eight countries, forecasting both confirmed and death cases over a 14-day period. Our findings reveal that Facebook Prophet with holiday impact and XGBoost consistently outperform other models in predicting new cases, with XGBoost excelling in forecasting death cases, followed by ARIMA and Facebook Prophet. Notably, XGBoost with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.42, mean squared error (MSE) of 4.06, and root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.01, demonstrated the best performance for death prediction. These results underscore the potential of advanced analytical techniques in pandemic management, offering valuable insights for public health officials and policymakers. By providing accurate short-term projections, these models can facilitate proactive decision-making, resource allocation, and intervention strategies, ultimately contributing to more effective COVID-19 mitigation efforts worldwide. This re- search not only demonstrates the practical application of machine learning in epidemiological forecasting but also highlights the importance of model selection in achieving optimal predictive performance for different aspects of the pandemic. © 2024 IEEE.

We discuss a dual band Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) based Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna (RDRA). The proposed design operates at 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz resonance frequencies respectively. The dual band operation is achieved by using CSRR unit cell in the ground of the proposed antenna along with the Dielectric Resonator (DR). The Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) is excited using a simple microstrip feed line. The 2.3 GHz resonance frequency is obtained by excitation of the CSRR unit cell while the 2.6 GHz resonance frequency is achieved by the excitation of the DRA. The proposed design is simulated using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) software. The antenna has high gain of 6.86 dBi at 2.3 GHz and high gain of 6.4 dBi at 2.6 GHz respectively. Considering the overall performance, the proposed DRA has good characteristics for the WiMAX and LTE wireless applications. © 2023 IEEE.
