Edge computing is a growing paradigm where compute resources are provisioned between data sources and the cloud to decrease compute latency from data transfer, lower costs, comply with security policies, and more. Edge systems are as varied as their applications, serving internet services, IoT, and emerging technologies. Due to the tight constraints experienced by many edge systems, research computing testbeds have become valuable tools for edge research and application benchmarking. Current testbed infrastructure, however, fails to properly emulate many important edge contexts leading to inaccurate benchmarking. Institutions with broad interests in edge computing can build testbeds, but prior work suggests that edge testbeds are often application or sensor specific. A general edge testbed should include access to many of the sensors, software, and accelerators on which edge systems rely, while slicing those resources to fit user-defined resource footprints. PROWESS is an edge testbed that answers this challenge. PROWESS provides access across an institution to sensors, compute resources, and software for testing constrained edge applications. PROWESS runs edge workloads as sets of containers with access to sensors and specialized hardware on an expandable cluster of light-weight edge nodes which leverage institutional networks to decrease implementation cost and provide wide access to sensors. We implemented a multi-node PROWESS deployment connected to sensors across Ohio State University's campus. Using three edge-native applications, we demonstrate that PROWESS is simple to configure, has a small resource footprint, scales gracefully, and minimally impacts institutional networks. We also show that PROWESS closely approximates native execution of edge workloads and facilitates experiments that other systems testbeds can not.

The paper deals with the computer systems frequency-dependent components using for processing sensor signals with the possibility of restructuring their characteristics. In the analysis course of second-order transfer functions, formulas were obtained that describe the numerator and denominator coefficients. The issues of stability express analysis and the transition process duration during restructuring are also considered. An example, the theoretical research application is given, which shows the restructuring efficiency on standard equations.

Infra-Red (IR) payloads are used on-board for measuring the thermal/spectral properties of objects. To reduce background and enhance Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NeTd), it is required to cool the detector (Focal Plane Assembly-FPA) and associated optics. Linear Sterling Cryo-Coolers are typically used for cooling of FPA. A diode temperature sensor is used to sense the cold tip (FPA) temperature. Long/Medium Wave Infra-Red sensors(LWIR/MIR) require tighter control of FPA temperature (Better than 15 mK (mili-Kelvin)). Since Diode sensor has a small output dynamic range of ∼500 mV (0.6 V to 1.1 V), therefore achieving stringent control is dependent on precise performance of design blocks (low noise current bias, high resolution temperature processing and PID Controller). Design of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller plays a very crucial role in overall performance. Overshoot, settling time and stability are affected by PID design. Cooler Drive Electronics (CDE) is used to implement these functions. Truncation losses in a typical implementation of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based PID Controller leads to higher ripple. A Micro-controller based floating point PID controller is proposed to overcome these issues, thus enhancing the functionality to provide tighter control of Cooler temperature. In this paper we have discussed design and development of a Floating Point PID controller. A prototype (Enhanced CDE) was developed and tested in close loop with the peripheral sub-systems (Cryo-Cooler, Front End Camera Electronics(FECE), and Payload Power Supply(PPS» to demonstrate performance in actual payload environment. Short Term temperature stability of 10mK RMS (Root Mean Square) and Long Term temperature stability of 75mK (Peak to Peak) for Cryo-Cooler is achieved against the requirements of © 2023 IEEE.

More security is required for the newly emerging wireless adhoc network technologies. The development and testing of prototypes under blackhole attack mitigation is demonstrated in this work. The hardware model enables data transfer between PCs, laptops, and mobile devices in both indoor and outdoor environments. The system consists of five nodes, each of which is wirelessly connected to the others via ESP32 boards that have been programmed using the Arduino IDE. The hardware prototype was tested, and the data size was changed to measure the packet delivery time.

In recent years, photovoltaic power generation, as one of the most important modes of clean energy generation, has gradually become the focus of China's energy development efforts. The Jiuquan area in Gansu, with good solar radiation conditions, high light intensity and high solar power generation potential, is an ideal area for building solar photovoltaic power generation farms. However, as the photovoltaic panels(PV panels) are exposed to the outdoors for a long time, the surface of the panels tend to accumulate a layer of dust, which makes it difficult for the sunlight to shine directly on the power generation area, seriously reducing the actual power generation efficiency of the panels, and at the same time, the 'heat island effect' caused by the dust may lead to damage of the panels. In this paper, a PV dust monitoring system is designed to solve the problem of low efficiency of PV power generation system caused by dust. The first part introduces the background, purpose and significance of the research, introduces the current status of domestic and international research, and states the main research work of this topic;the second part introduces the basic theory of PV power generation system and the effect of dust on PV power generation system;the third part introduces the design scheme of the system from the perspective of hardware and software;the fourth part introduces the specific implementation scheme of the system. This paper provides a solution to monitor the dust accumulation on the surface of PV panels, and provides support for the prediction of power generation and the recommendation of the cleaning cycle of PV panels. © 2021 IEEE.

Filipino Sign Language (FSL) is the primary language used by the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) community in the Philippines. The lack of support for FSL from the government has led to a huge communication gap between the DHH and the hearing society. A substantial amount of research has been done to develop sign language recognition systems based on computer vision or wearable technology. However, most such systems are limited to controlled settings, while wearable systems also raise issues such as inconvenience to users. Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology has recently seen potential in gesture recognition applications as it allows the system to be non-contact and resistant to environmental factors while ensuring high resolution for recognizing small movements. An mmWave-based FSL recognition system that can translate isolated signs into their equivalent gloss was developed. Data from a TI IWR1443 radar sensor was fed into a preprocessing algorithm and a deep learning model composed of multi-view 2D CNNs and LSTM. 4 models were trained based on a dataset of 24 FSL signs gathered with 3 native Deaf signers in 3 different environments. A total of 3240 samples were collected, resulting in a model that attained an overall peak accuracy of 94.9% and an average real-time recognition latency of about 2.01 s. The model's performance is comparable to both existing FSL and mmWave systems, showing immense potential for future work on FSL recognition using mmWave.

Forest fires pose significant threats to both the environment and human life, necessitating the development of advanced detection and prevention systems. In this study, we propose an integrated IoT (Internet of Things)-based system for early detection and management of forest fires. The system incorporates a range of sensors including heat, gas, and thermal imaging sensors, along with IoT technology for real-time monitoring and communication. Utilizing image processing techniques and (ML) Machine Learning algorithms, the system can accurately detect fires, predict their spreading patterns, and analyze environmental conditions. Key features include the deployment of disposable heat sensors for temperature monitoring, IoT sensors for gas detection and weather monitoring, and a centralized processing node for data analysis. Alerts are sent to nearby authorities and residents, while automated firefighting devices are activated to suppress fires until backup arrives. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in early detection and prevention of forest fires.

Mechatronic systems have increasingly stringent performance requirements for motion control, leading to a situation where many factors, such as position-dependency, cannot be neglected in feedforward control. The aim of this paper is to compensate for position-dependent effects by modeling feedforward parameters as a function of position. A framework to model and identify feedforward parameters as a continuous function of position is developed by combining Gaussian processes and feedforward parameter learning techniques. The framework results in a fully data-driven approach, which can be readily implemented for industrial control applications. The framework is experimentally validated and shows a significant performance increase on a commercial wire bonder.

Object tracking in computer vision can be done either by using a marker-less or marker-based approach. Computer vision systems have been using Fiducial markers for pose estimation in different applications such as augmented reality [5] and robot navigation [4]. With the advancements in Augmented Reality (AR), new tools such as AugmentedReality uco (ArUco) [6] markers have been introduced to the literature. ArUco markers, are used to tackle the localization problem in AR, allowing camera pose estimation to be carried out by a binary matrix. Using a binary matrix not just simplifies the process but also increases the efficiency. As a part of our initiative to create a cost-efficient, 24/7 accessible, Virtual Reality (VR) based chemistry lab for underprivileged students, we wanted to create an alternative way of interacting with the virtual scene. In this study, we used ArUco markers to create a low-cost keyboard only using a piece of paper and an off-the-shelf webcam. We believe this method of keyboard will be more beneficial to the user as they can see the keys before they are typing in the corner of the screen instead of an insufficient on the screen VR keyboard or a regular keyboard where the user can't see what they are typing with a VR headset. As potential extensions of the base system, we have also designed and evaluated a stereo camera and an IMU sensor based system with various sensor fusion techniques. In summary, the stereo camera reduces occlusion related problems, and the IMU sensor detects vibrations which in turn simplifies the KeyPress detection problem. It has been observed that use of any of these additional sensors improves the overall system performance.

Logistics automation has been the subject of many developments linking robotic hardware with improved quality and safety of work for warehouse employees. It is also a field where robotic navigation, route optimization and precise maneuvering are crucial to the competitiveness of the engineering product on the market. This research demonstrates a mathematical modeling method through which robots can navigate warehouse floors efficiently, using indoor positioning of high accuracy. Moreover, the paper also describes the hardware considerations taken into account when measuring the accuracy of the robot from achieving its destination on the floor plan. A prototype is creating, showing the sensor fusion interlinks for obstacle avoidance and distance mapping. Finally, the prototype and the algorithm are tested against eight static, as well as dynamic performance tests, in order to validate the performance of the system in static and dynamic interference environments. The goal of this paper is to present the engineering perspectives of optimizing a self-driving warehouse robot through utilization of the emerging technologies related to indoor positioning. This is presented through a prototype development of an Automated Guided Vehicle which will perform indoor positioning of itself across a warehouse floor plan and be able to avoid obstacles while driving towards its destination. Both the hardware description and the algorithmic modeling will be presented, accompanied by an extensive set of testing experiments, presented to determine the feasibility of our proposed developments in this field. © 2022 Toate drepturile asupra acestei ediţii sunt rezervate editorilor.
