The accurate quantification of scattered laser radiation is crucial for estimating threats to humans from outdoor applications of high-power lasers. In addition to the hazard due to intrabeam viewing, specular and diffuse reflections from irradiated targets can potentially harm the human eye and skin. Measurement techniques for the detection of scattered laser radiation have been developed in the way to provide quantitative information for advanced analyses as well as proofs and further improvements of laser safety calculations. The detection system has to be calibrated, characterized and validated in order to obtain reliable results. A compact and wavelength-specific detection system is presented, which relies on the technical specifications (i.e. entrance aperture and angular field) according to German laser safety policies. The mobile detection system is deployed at the DLR laser test range in Lampoldshausen (Germany). Field measurements are performed by irradiating metallic targets with high-power laser radiation at 1030 nm and simultaneously measuring the scattered laser radiation with the calibrated detection system. The field of view of the detection system is oriented to the target by using an alignment laser integrated into the detection system. Target samples with different surface roughness are examined in the experiments to analyze specularly and diffusely scattered laser radiation. The dependence of the scattering angle and the distance from the metallic targets to the detection system are investigated. The results are compared to threshold limits of laser safety standards.

Due to the rapid changes in the Earth’s climate, reliable weather forecasting is becoming increasingly challenging. Therefore, Weather Monitoring systems are utilized to monitor the ever-changing weather patterns. The data gathered by such devices is used to forecast weather as well as keep a log of the environmental changes at a place. Such data is extremely useful in the study of earth and analyzing the changing climatic and environmental conditions at a place. Further, the data and analytics so collected can be utilized in a variety of applications like agriculture, geology, mining, and weather forecast. This paper describes an innovative method for monitoring the weather and making the findings of such monitoring accessible to individuals in other areas of the world. This is made possible by a technology known as the "Internet of Things", which is a highly developed and efficient method of connecting physical objects to the internet and connecting everything in the world to a single network. The proposed system uses the temperature, pressure, and rain sensors to monitor the ambient conditions of weather. The sensed information is then transmitted to a server for data logging, which logs and represents the collected sensor data. The updated information from the current system is available online and viewed using user interface. When compared to existing weather monitoring system, the proposed method includes data logging facility to view the information accurately using IoT technology.

sensor gloves are gaining importance in tracking hand and finger movements in virtual reality applications as well as in scientific research. They introduce an unrestricted way of capturing motion without the dependence on direct line of sight as for visual tracking systems. With such sensor gloves, data of complex motion tasks can be recorded and used for modeling probabilistic trajectories or teleoperation of robotic arms. While a multitude of sensor glove designs relying on different functional principles exist, these approaches require either sensitive calibration and sensor fusion methods or complex manufacturing processes. In this paper, we propose a low-budget, yet accurate sensor glove system that uses flex sensors for fast and efficient motion tracking. We evaluate the performance of our sensor glove, such as accuracy and latency, and demonstrate the functionality by recording motion data for learning probabilistic movement models. © 2021 IEEE.

The EU-project ASINA is testing Low-Cost Particulate Matter sensors (LCPMS) for industrial monitoring of the concentration of airborne particles, with the purpose of integrating this sensor technology within the data collection layer of Digital Twins (DTs) for manufacturing. This paper shows the results of field performance evaluations carried out with five LCPMS from different manufacturers (Alphasense OPC-N3, Plantower 9003, Sensirion SPS30, Sensirion SEN55 and Tera sensor NetxPM), during several field sampling campaigns, conducted in four pre-commercial and commercial pilot lines (PLs) that manufacture nano-enabled products, belonging to the ASINA and OASIS H2020 EU-projects [2, 28]. Field tests consisted of deploying LCPMS in manufacturing process, measuring in parallel with collocated reference and informative instruments (OPS TSI 3330/CPC TSI 3007), to enable intercomparison. The results show the complexity and differential response of the LCPMS depending on the characteristics of the monitored scenario (PL). Overall, they exhibit uneven precision and linearity and significant bias, so their use in industrial digital systems without proper calibration can lead to uncertain and biased measurements. In this sense, simple linear models are not able to capture the complexity of the problem (non-linear systems) and advanced calibration schemes (e.g. based on machine learning), applied "scenario by scenario" and in operating conditions as close as possible to the final application, are suggested to achieve reliable measurements with the LCPMS. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) based on Long-Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) are being used in various applications. In WSNs, in addition to periodic packet transmission, sensor nodes transmit packets when they detect an event. This action enables real-time information aggregation. When multiple sensor nodes detect an event at the same time, they send signals simultaneously, which may result in signal collisions at the receiver. This paper proposes a symbol detection method that allows information aggregation even when receiving superimposed chirp signals. Furthermore, this paper introduces an event source estimation method as a use case for collecting aggregate correlated information. Computer simulations show that the proposed method increases the probability of achieving the absolute source estimation error of 10 [deg.] by 11 points compared to conventional methods.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones, due to their versatility can be used in a wide range of applications, from army missions to industrial ones. With all these capabilities, the widespread use of drones in smart cities is limited, due to problems and concerns related to safety (their crash for technical reasons, collision in the air with other planes, extreme natural weather), confidentiality (hackers can use malicious applications to exploit and obtain personal data / profiles of people using the wireless location method) and security (thanks to the technology inside the drone-GPS, Wi-Fi that could be hacked/destroyed by attackers). Currently there are many types of drones classified by size, weight, altitude, endurance, landing method (VTOL, HTOL), etc. However, these parameters vary depending on the application of the drone. The performance of drones is focused on the type of built-in electronics but also on the material used to make it. All modern drones are equipped with a series of sensors and other communication systems, increasing inevitably the total weight and reducing the flight time. Therefore, weight reduction is a vital parameter to build the drone's body/structure (generally using thermosetting fibers and resins) without compromising their resistance. Thus, high strength-to-weight ratio, facilitates maneuverability, reduces energy consumption, increases the ability to carry more payload, flight time, etc. The use of composites compared to aluminum reduces weight by 15-45%, increases corrosion, fatigue, impact resistance, reduces noise and vibrations. The composites most used for manufacturing the structure of UAVs (fuselage, wing, landing gear) are: polymers reinforced with carbon fibers (CFRP), polymers reinforced with fiberglass (GFRP), boron and aramid fibers. © 2022 Toate drepturile asupra acestei ediţii sunt rezervate editorilor.

In recent years, remote multi-agent human-robot communication and remote agent telemanipulation have thrived considerably in line with the rise of autonomy since Tesla‘s invention of the "distant operator" with a patent (US613809A) in 1898 for controlling wireless drones remotely. As a result of taking on more and more tasks that require decision-making skills, vehicles are becoming more and more automated using intelligent control systems that are getting better with advanced sensors and actuators using AI. While the ultimate goal of these systems is full autonomy, it may take years/decades to make these systems thoroughly integrated into mixed traffic due to the varying expectations of stakeholders and their level of trust in autonomous vehicles (AVs). To expedite this integration and consequently exploit the benefits of these automated systems, in all future scenarios of fully autonomous ground or air vehicle networks, human intervention is expected to take place in the form of "human-in-the-loop (HITL)" remote immediate involvement. In this direction, a scalable agent-based platform was designed for the telemanipulation of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (A-UAVs) from the perspective of human-multi-robot architecture by which various HITL telemanipulation schemes can be tested, evaluated and improved. This report explains the design and infrastructure of this platform with its fundamental components.

The occurrence of intrusions in smart cities has made the development of an inexpensive and effective intrusion detection system essential. Intrusion remains one of the most important aspects of smart city applications like homes, hospitals, transport, etc. Most of the existing systems employ focus only on one particular application like home security, not portable systems, and also use cameras only for surveillance. Therefore, taking into account the aforementioned drawbacks, this paper presents an intrusion system for smart city applications, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The proposed system uses hardware components like Raspberry Pi model B+, Pi Camera, and PIR sensor (Passive Infrared) as well as software components like VNC viewer (Virtual Network Computing) and Thonny Python IDE (Integrated Development Environment). Motion detection is facilitated by the utilization of the PIR sensor, then the Pi Camera photographs the image automatically, and the Raspberry Pi device will send an alert via email to end-user devices that are connected with the email such as personal computers or smartphones. The captured data is securely stored in the email of the end-user’s devices, ensuring confidentiality and privacy.

Cardiovascular disease is a major risk to human health, which needs long-term monitoring for prevention and early diagnosis. Optical sensors present the advantage of immunity to electromagnetic field and high sensitivity, and have been growing in a variety of emerging medical applications to monitor human cardiac parameters. Most of the current optical sensors can only measure limited cardiovascular information such as the heart rate, therefore, the optics-based approach for cardiac electrophysiology has attracted the attention of more researchers. In this paper, we developed a method to evaluate the availability of our proposed anti-EMI optical sensor. The sensitivity of optical sensor based on electro-optic modulation can achieve 266.4 mu W/V and detect the electrocardiogram (ECG) by attached to the chest and edge of clavicle. A series of ECG signals over 1 hour were analyzed using proposed method, which is driven by the optimization of R-peak location, Lorenz plot and statistical correlation. ECG monitoring results of the optical sensors are in accordance with a standard clinical device (SOMNOtouch (TM) RESP) among different subjects. Moreover, both the sensors are tested in daily electromagnetic conditions, and it causes some obvious signal artifacts to the SOMNO system, but almost no effect on the optical sensors during the long-term test. We provide further grounds for such clinical applications by demonstrating, for the first time to our knowledge, optics-based device used in long-term ECG monitoring, an essential tool in modern cardiac monitoring applications.
