Nowadays, Cyber-Physical systems (CPS), particularly drones, play a pivotal role in environmental research. Scientists depend on these platforms to monitor various sensor data and ensure comprehensive data archiving. However, despite their advantages, researchers encounter several challenges, including communication limitations and the complexity of setting up systems tailored to their needs. To address these issues, we propose MoDD, a model-driven data collection framework based on a customized publish/subscribe model. MoDD simplifies the development and configuration of data collection systems. It offers scientists a solution that meets their specific needs, allowing them to focus on high-level requirements while the framework manages the underlying complexities. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MoDD through practical evaluations on an actual Unmanned Surface Vehicle. Additionally, results show a 79% reduction in throughput (drone to base station link) compared to existing publish/subscribe systems.

Behavior Trees (BTs) are a formalism increasingly used to control the execution of robotic systems. The strength of BTs resides in their compact, hierarchical and transparent representation. However, when used in practical applications transparency is often hindered by the introduction of implicit runtime relations between nodes, e.g., because of data dependencies or hardware-related ordering constraints. Manually verifying the correctness of a BT with respect to these hidden relations is a tedious and error-prone task. This paper presents a modular planning-based approach for automatically testing BTs offline at design time, to identify possible executions that may violate given data and ordering constraints and to exhibit traces of these executions to help debugging. Our approach supports both basic and advanced BT node types, e.g., supporting parallel behaviors, and can be extended with other node types as needed. We evaluate our approach on BTs used in a commercially deployed robotics system and on a large set of randomly generated trees showing that our approach scales to realistic sizes of more than 3000 nodes. From their conception, optical fibers have been primarily used in telecommunications technology to transmit data using non-polarized light. Nowadays, however, the development of fibers has advanced considerably and new applications have been discovered. One such application is utilizing optical fibers as sensors, predominantly polarizing fiber sensors working with polarization-preserving fibers. Their use thus extends to the temperature/pressure sensor used in this work. This article deals with the issue of temperature measurement using a single- mode sensory polarization maintaining fiber. Since this fiber is not circularly symmetrical, or rather, the stress elements inserted into this fiber are utilized, birefringence occurs in its core. With the help of this birefringence, it is then possible to monitor the mutual displacement of the two axes and to measure changes in the ambient temperature of the sensor fiber. Problems occur with sensors that need to be supplied with light over long distances using common communication fibers. This option is very beneficial especially in potentially explosive atmospheres and in general in places where an electrical signal cannot be applied, for example, due to neutral EMC compatibility.

A tightly coupled multi-sensor SLAM algorithm based on feature planes in indoor scenes is proposed for laser SLAM algorithms in indoor environments affected by glass and mirrors and with few feature points. Firstly, the odometry motion estimation is performed by fusing inertial guidance, and the key frames are judged by the positional transformation. Secondly, the key frames are extracted based on RANSAC, matched with the data in the feature plane manager, and then the data are merged and expanded. Finally, the LIDAR data information, inertial guidance information and feature plane information are put into the sliding window optimizer and solved by nonlinear optimization to obtain the optimal poses and maps. To verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, experiments are conducted in real indoor scenes and detailed comparisons are made on the optimization time and localization accuracy. The experimental results show that this method achieves better positional estimation accuracy and shows good robustness and real-time performance compared with current advanced laser SLAM methods. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Custom object detection systems are essential for meeting the specialized requirements of diverse applications, including manufacturing and biomedical engineering. Conventional deep-learning methods outperform these tasks but depend on large volumes of labeled data. This study presents a deep-learning method for object detection that reduces the amount of labeled training data to a single unlabeled 3D image obtained by a structured light system. By incorporating a 3D data augmentation stage and using a multi-scale prediction approach, we ensured robust detection and counting across different orientations and scales. This method drastically reduces the training data and improves the accuracy and robustness of the data processing using 3D sensors under limited environmental and computational conditions. The performance of this method indicates its suitability for adoption in a wide range of real-world sensor applications, providing a solid framework for advanced 3D sensor systems and offering a scalable and efficient solution for complex detection and counting tasks.

Future conflicts involving Joint All-Domain Operations (JADO) will require an unprecedented scale of standoff targeting against hardened, mobile, and dynamic targets that will only be possible through effective use of sensing, command and control (C2), and targeting assets across multi-domain (space/air/ground/sea) kill chains. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy are critical to enabling effective, scalable, and timely kill chains, but only if applied appropriately to address kill chain limitations, informed by quantitative system of systems modeling and simulation at the data level. To address these challenges, BAE systems is developing a Virtual System of systems Testbed to enable detailed quantitative mission level analysis of kill chain performance in a variety of multi-domain scenarios, combining high fidelity platform and sensor simulation with detailed modeling of information flows through the kill chain. The Testbed uses Bohemia Interactive Simulation's Virtual Battlespace 4 (VBS4) to model virtual physical entities, and uses the VBS4 Simulation SDK to pass dynamic scenario data messages for real-time processing by advanced algorithm plug-ins including AI-based information dissemination and Autonomous mission management. In this paper, we will describe the challenges posed by JADO and the critical importance of system of system analysis to inform the application of advanced algorithmic technologies. We discuss the rationale and architecture of the Virtual System of systems testbed, the technologies incorporated, and the methodologies for system of systems analysis. We will present results assessing system of systems contribution of these technologies to improving mission-level metrics such as latency, scalability, and robustness of kill chain response.

More than 1.35 million lives are lost due to traffic accidents, with 94% of these accidents caused by human error. In order to significantly improve the traffic safety and efficiency, automated driving systems, including advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving, exchanges sensor and perception data between the automated vehicle and its surrounding objects via Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communication. Although V2X technologies, such as dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X), are essential for the safety in certain driving use cases, they may completely fail in the presence of radio interference. Therefore, the development of robust V2X systems to deal with radio jamming in automated driving applications is crucial. In this paper, we present scenarios of the radio jamming attacks considering traditional driving use cases of V2X systems and we propose countermeasures against these attacks. Using a simulation environment, we validate the proposed countermeasures mitigating the effects of radio jamming. © 2023 IEEE.

Considering the issues of the filter order in a signal processing channel with sensors, through the serial link of the same type filters with low order. New approach to define cutoff frequency of such link was obtained. This solution allows quickly change the order and bandwidth of bandpass filters in robotic mobile platforms with limited computing resources. Proposed using a preliminary calculation of such frequencies, depending on the number of serial links of the same type of filters. This allows quickly rebuild the sensor signal processing channel.

A metal diaphragm-based airflow sensor based on fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) interference has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is composed of glass sleeving, ceramic ferrule and metal diaphragm. Through data calibration, a practical airflow sensor has been fabricated. As a result of the stainless steel diaphragm and open F-P cavity, the durability of the sensor is ensured, and it can be used in poor air quality environments. Experimental results in the airflow field show that the sensor has the potential to estimate the air quantity of high-speed airflow in various air conduit.
