This paper describes a new data analysis technique for the computation of important brain parameters from intracranial pressure (ICP) data. In contrast to conventional methods, our method does not need the additional infusion of liquor into the brain. Our new technique is able to achieve the requested parameters only from natural fluctuations within the intracranial pressure signal. The advantage of our method is the minimisation of the risk for the patient. Furthermore, the proposed technique is much more comfortable for patients than the conventional methods. For the data acquisition a portable telemetric measurement unit will be used. Plausible Results from real data show that our method is highly efficient. Due to its simplicity our method is suitable for on-line monitoring applications. This new measuring system could also be implemented in other fields where telemetric sensors are needed and biological signals up to the 50 Hz-range are measured.

We discuss applications of time-frequency analysis to the investigation of astronomical type signals. In particular, we apply time-frequency techniques to a data set consisting of the kinetic energy in the three body problem We explain how the methods of time-frequency analysis shed light on these signals and also how the concept of multicomponent signals is applied to their decomposition. We also discuss methods to do simple filtering and estimation of the signal parameters.

This paper presents system trade-offs necessary to deliver the high performance available from the emerging UK Second Generation Long-Linear Detector Technology, in the Long Wave Infra-Red (LWIR) waveband. These trade-offs include thermal referencing methods, dynamic range, and scan configurations. Experience and measurements from the new GEC-Marconi sensors' LOLA Imager are used to support the arguments. Also indicated are the trade-offs leading to optimised systems for roles in demanding applications such as advanced Airborne Targeting.

Film radiography has long served the aerospace industry as a principal method for hardware flaw detection. Although excellent in performance, this method is extremely time consuming, labor intensive, costly, and is unsuitable for real time inspections. Modern digital radiographic systems overcome some of these difficulties but are also limited in terms of speed of operation due to persistence of the sensor and a problematic tradeoff between the X-ray detection efficiency and spatial resolution. We are developing an innovative X-ray imaging detector consisting of a novel microstructured CsI scintillator coupled to a fiberoptic taper-based CCD. Thin-film deposition techniques, previously developed to produce thin, structured CsI screens have been extended to fabricate CsI screens, up to 450 mg/cm(2) (1,000 mu m) in thickness. These sensors are suitable to provide high detection efficiency with high image quality for NDE applications. A prototype high energy imaging system was constructed by integrating these screens into a fiberoptic-based CCD camera. The performance was compared to that of the same system using a standard polycrystalline phosphor for NDE imaging applications. The experimental evaluations were carried out at Scientific Measurement systems, Inc., Austin, TX.

This paper details the design evolution of an open architecture controller by presenting case studies of how the needs and requirements of end user, application/sensor developer and system integrator influenced the design methodology of the MOSAIC research platform, the first open architecture control supporting advanced capabilities. Degrees of openness such as Pseudo-Open, Piece-Wise-CommerciaI and Device-independent are defined and explained in relation to various implementations of that research platform. The integration of sensors and adaptive control algorithms are used to illustrate how the services offered by the various design approaches impact the scope of the control's capabilities. The concepts of Machining Mode, Primitives, Functions and Operations are presented as a framework in which advanced machining capabilities can be categorized and used to ascertain the easy in which they may be integrated on various control architectures. New applications of technology and research results are also discussed offering a glimpse at the possibilities available on the open architecture.

The goal of the lest bed project is to test portable, unattended chemical analysis instruments that will help verify the compliance of various international agreements on weapons of mass destruction. We report on the design of the test bed and present response curves for the first sensor deployed at the test bed, The architecture of the data-acquisition and display interface utilizes industry standards (LonWorks and CORBA), state-of-the-art developmental teals, advanced data visualization and display tools, and commercial and government off-the-shelf software and hardware in order to have a flexible/modular infrastructure for integrating and testing both sensors and software applications for unattended remote monitoring (URM) systems. The HAZMAT Spill Center (HSC) located at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) will be described as well as the opportunities it offers for testing unattended chemical sensors.

Sandia National Laboratories has recently developed two major field test capabilities for unattended ground sensor systems at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site (NTS). The first capability utilizes the NTS large area, varied terrain, and intrasite communications systems for testing sensors for detecting and tracking vehicular traffic. sensor and ground truth data can be collected at either of two secure control centers. This system also includes an automated ground truth capability that consists of differential Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receivers on test vehicles and live TV coverage of critical road sections. Finally there is a high-speed, secure computer network link between the control centers and the Air Force's Theater Air Command and Control Simulation Facility in Albuquerque NM. The second capability is Bunker 2-300. It is a facility for evaluating advanced sensor systems for monitoring activities in underground cut-and-cover facilities. The main part of the facility consists of an underground bunker with three large rooms for operating various types of equipment. This equipment includes simulated chemical production machinery and controlled seismic and acoustic signal sources. There has been a thorough geologic and electromagnetic characterization of the region around the bunker. Since the facility is in a remote location, it well-isolated from seismic, acoustic, and electromagnetic interference.

This paper will describe in some detail two new large area CCD image sensors designed specifically to be used either as a single imager or assembled in mosaics of CCDs. The devices have 2048x4096, 15 mu m pixels;the difference being the orientation of the serial register. Performance data are presented on both front- and back-illuminated parts. In addition, a new production camera test system will also be described which is being used to screen test the advanced Camera CCDs for the Wide Field and High Resolution Channels.
