A highly-functional self-contained sensor data acquisition and processing system is under development for a probe designed to penetrate the surface of Mars. The processing system, based on an 8051 controller, is about the size of a postage stamp, weighs three grams, and consumes 50 mW in nominal operation. It is designed to operate in space under 15,000G impacts and down to -120 °C temperatures. Though small, its 32 analog inputs, six serial ports, 32 digital interface lines, eight analog outputs, and in-situ reprogrammability make this device attractive for direct application in many aerospace systems.

We have designed a Real-Time Co-Operating System (RTCOS)for simultaneously supporting real-time and non-real-time activities on a workstation with two or more processors. The RTCOS is Ûte software equivalent of a coprocessor, with a software architecture analogous to the hardware architecture that has been used in many workstations and personal computers. In this paper, we discuss our first software prototype of the RTCOS, which co-exists with Solaris 2.4 on a four-processor Sun SPARCstation 20. We summarize the feasibility of our approach through an experimental characterization of Solaris 2.4. We address the technical issues involved and present the details of our design. The RTCOS is targeted towards real-time applications in the sensor-based control, process control, signal processing, multimedia, and manufacturing domains. © 1996 IEEE

The Phillips Laboratory advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) comprises an observatory facility, a united computer network, a 3.63 meter telescope, and an associated sensor suite that will become operational beginning in 1997. Space Object Identification (SOI) is the primary mission for AEOS;however, astronomical applications and other visiting experiments are readily supported by the system design. The AEOS sensor suite functions derive from Air Force Space Command requirements, and incorporate high resolution imagery and multi-band radiometry performed over a broad range of wavelengths. Data collection capabilities are optimized for the rapid temporal variations in observed target brightness that arise from both intrinsic target variability and changing atmospheric characteristics during the course of an observation. Multi-spectral photometry/radiometry over the 0.4-23 mu m spectral region constitutes the principal observational technique for spatially unresolved targets. Thermal infrared wavelengths, i.e., 4-23 mu m, permit observation of targets that are in the shadow of the earth, and provide temperature measurements on all targets. High resolution visible to near-infrared imagery (0.7-1.0 mu m), approaching the diffraction limit, is collected on sunlit targets via an adaptive optics (A/O) system. Simultaneous LWIR(8-13 mu m) imagery is obtained with an infrared sensor that shares the high-resolution NIR imager's field of view through a dichroic beamsplitter. In order to minimize the thermal background, the LWIR imager is located close to the telescope, upstream of the A/O system. The LWIR resolution approaches the diffraction limit, due to the decreased impact of atmospheric turbulence at those wavelengths.

The sharing of a common aperture for both ladar pulse transmission and reception; and passive sensor surveillance, acquisition, and tracking, presents many unique challenges. Performance assessments based on fielded optical systems of this type are few. Our particular application (the BMDO advanced sensor Technology Program-ASTP for enhanced theater missile defense capability) calls for the sharing of common optics between a MWIR and LWIR, relatively low-background passive sensor, and a ladar for which the operational wavelength has not been selected. This paper describes the advantages and technical challenges associated with our shared optics application, reviews the state of the art in this area, and derives constraints on system designs. Briefly, we find that the shared aperture approach enjoys the obvious advantages of reduced size and weight, and simplifies handover of targets from the passive sensor to the ladar sensor. These advantages must be traded against potential passive sensor performance degradation in the areas of reduced duty cycle, increased noise floor, and reduced sensitivity.

This paper presents a neural network approach for online estimation of partial discharge (PD) location using advanced correlation techniques in power transformers. Ultrasonic sensors detect ultrasonic signals generated by a PD and the proposed method calculates time difference between the ultrasonic signals at each sensor pair using the cross-correlation technique applied by moving average and the Hamming window. The neural network takes distance difference as inputs converted from time difference, and estimates the PD location. Case studies show that the proposed method using advanced correlation technique and a neural network estimates the PD location better than conventional methods.

The aim of this paper is to discuss some important real-time issues involved in the design of complex robotic applications. In particular the problem of evaluating why and when a robotics application needs real-time computing is discussed first. The second issue concerns the definition of time constraints for each task of the robot. We show how time constraints, such as periods and deadlines, can be derived from the application, even though they are not explicitly specified in the requirements. As a third issue, we describe a general hierarchical control architecture, which can be built on top of a real-time system, to greatly simplify the development of complex robotics applications having real-time requirements.

Night vision technology is present in most military systems used today. The sensors range from night vision goggles to high performance infrared target acquisition and tracking systems. With the importance placed upon night vision, lower cost and wider availability of night vision technology is an important consideration. Infrared sensors, which do not require cryogenic cooling, have many of these assets. Recently, the excellent imaging performance of uncooled infrared has captured the attention of many system users, and new applications are rapidly emerging. This paper reviews these application areas, explores new possibilities, and assesses the technology underway to further expand the realm of uncooled infrared imaging. Technological advances, both in the sensor technology and the interface with the imaging system, will expand the use of uncooled infrared sensors into additional military and commercial applications.

One of the US Department of Energy, Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) mine safety and health research programs is developing technology that will allow remote-controlled operation of mechanized equipment normally used in underground room-and-pillar coal mining, thereby permitting workers to be located away from the hazardous coal extraction area (the face). As part of this program, advanced machine navigation and control technologies are being developed for underground room-and-pillar and highwall coal mining that can be applied to commercially available mining equipment. These technologies use off-the-shelf components and a flexible control software architecture to minimize the effort required to adapt them to mining equipment. An accurate reliable navigation system that can provide the mining machine's heading and location at all times is a critical requirement for a remote-controlled mining system. After much research involving several different types of navigation sensors, the Honeywell Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System was selected as showing the most promise. It has been installed on a continuous mining machine at PRCs surface test facility. This paper describes the system being employed on a mining machine while final accuracy and performance testing continues.
