Large area 1-3 composite piezoelectric transducer panels have been produced by Materials systems Inc. (MSI). These SonoPanels measure 250 × 250 mm and have excellent response as underwater actuators as well as sensors. Piezocomposite panel manufacturing has been facilitated by an injection molding technology for fabricating net-shape lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic preforms. An array of fifteen 250 × 250 mm 1-3 composite actuator panels, integrated with surface mounted pressure and velocity sensors, has been attached to a steel backing structure. The array has been evaluated for underwater active surface control applications at the Naval Research Laboratory. sensor-actuator coupling was investigated, with good agreement between calculated and measured performance.

In this paper we describe our approach to the design of proximity sensor arrays. Each sensing element of the proximity sensor array is a composite sensor, i.e. a sensor which is composed of an in-air ultrasonic rangefinder and an infrared detector. This sensor arrangement is capable, in principle, to achieve a perception of the explored objects that is not necessarily limited to their geometrical properties (size, shape and location relative to the sensor); possibly, the perception can be extended to other relevant features. In this paper, we show that, in principle, a sort of perception of the surface reflectance (the color) is achievable. The concept of the proposed sensor array spans a wide range of potential applications in flexible industrial automation, service robotics and autonomous mobility. The system described, in particular, is intended for providing an advanced wheelchair with the navigational capabilities required for improving the driving skills of disabled users.

This paper presents an overview of the design and potential applications of a 360-degree scanning, multi-spectral intrusion detection sensor. This moderate-resolution, true panoramic imaging sensor is intended for exterior use at ranges from 50 to 1500 meters. This advanced Exterior sensor (AES) simultaneously uses three sensing technologies (infrared, visible, and radar) along with advanced data processing methods to provide low false-alarm intrusion detection, tracking, and immediate visual assessment. The images from the infrared and visible detector sets and the radar range data are updated as the sensors rotate once per second. The radar provides range data with one-meter resolution. This sensor has been designed for easy use and rapid deployment to cover wide areas beyond or in place of typical perimeters, and tactical applications around fixed or temporary high-value assets. AES prototypes are in development. applications discussed in this paper include replacements, augmentations, or new installations at fixed sites where topological features, atmospheric conditions, environmental restrictions, ecological regulations, and archaeological features limit the use of conventional security components and systems.

Many tasks that can be fulfilled by millimeter wave sensors are in principle the solution to 2-D or 3-D imaging problems. After a recapitulation of the basics of obtaining 3-D resolution in spatial frequency domain the various methods of obtaining longitudinal resolution such as pulse, pulsed FM, FMCW and PN modulation are discussed as well as principles to achieve lateral resolution in one or two dimensions. The corresponding methods of mechanical beam scanning, phased array antennas, wavefront reconstruction or digital beam forming are reviewed with respect to sensor applications. advanced methods of using a transmitter antenna diversity to efficiently use a given array of a limited number of receiver antennas are described according to this scheme. Most of the principles are underlined by examples of systems which have been realized at TUM. All systems parameters related to spatial resolution can be efficiently characterized and compared in spatial frequency domain.

Passivity based controllers are used in structural control due to their inherent robustness properties. These controllers require sensor/actuator collocation. In this paper, we consider the design of a "squaring down" matrix which renders a system passive by using a linear combination of all collocated and non-collocated sensor/actuator pairs. The design uses experimental transfer functions and does not require the knowledge of the system model. The problem of finding the squaring down matrix is cast as a solution to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) subject to some additional performance considerations. The design procedure of the squaring down matrix assumes that velocity information is available from the sensors which is not generally the case. We show that the squaring down matrix can be implemented without the use of such velocity information. We provide experimental results gathered from the single link flexible beam setup in the C/sub La/MS laboratory at RPI to show that implementation of passive loops without velocity measurements provides very good results.

A number of civil applications such as motion sensors and communications systems are planned to use the Ka-band frequency range. An MMIC chip set for the realization of the millimeter-wave front-end has been developed. The key MMIC circuit functions for Ka-band communication systems have been fabricated. Low noise amplifiers, a medium power amplifier, mixers and a dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO) have been developed using a common 0.25 /spl mu/m PMHFET technology allowing the future integration of several key components on a single chip. A voltage controlled oscillator has been realized in a GaInP-GaAs HBT technology for improvement of the phase noise performance. Low noise Schottky diode upconverter and downconverter are also available in 0.25 /spl mu/m MESFET technology with buried n/sup +/ layer.

A smart-pixel cellular neural network with hardware annealing capability, digitally programmable synaptic weights, and multisensor parallel interface has been under development for advanced space sensor applications. The smart-pixel CNN architecture is a programmable multi-dimensional array of optoelectronic neurons which are locally connected with their local neurons and associated active-pixel sensors. Integration of the neuroprocessor in each processor node of a scalable multiprocessor system offers orders-of-magnitude computing performance enhancements for on-board real-time intelligent multisensor processing and control tasks of advanced small satellites. The smart-pixel CNN operation theory, architecture, design and implementation, and system applications are investigated in detail. The VLSI implementation feasibility was illustrated by a prototype smart-pixel 5/spl times/5-neuroprocessor array chip of active dimensions 1380 /spl mu/m/spl times/746 /spl mu/m in a 2-/spl mu/m CMOS technology.

sensor signal processing represents a very important tool to improve dramatically advance sensor performance. The design of a new low-cost microelectronic interface to process signals generated by both capacitive and piezoelectric sensors is presented and analyzed in this paper. The basic strategies developed in this project has previously been encountered during the development of dedicated piezoelectric analog processing circuitries for robotic applications. The authors are now trying to extend these design criteria and accuracy evaluation processes to a more general class of sensors in order to establish useful procedures able to optimize advanced sensor development using microelectronic technologies.

Integrated optoelectronic interconnects offer a potentially lower cost, higher density alternative to wire-based technologies for I/O and inter-chip communication. This paper outlines two systems being designed at Georgia Tech which incorporate integrated thin film optoelectronic devices onto high throughput VLSI digital processors. The first system places an array of thin film detectors on top of SIMD processing elements allowing direct area connections between sensors and processors. This allows extremely fast frame processing rates (1-10 thousand frames per second) which are required in high speed and scanned imaging systems. The second system presented incorporates inter-chip IR optoelectronic channels which pass transparently through silicon. These links allow communication between three dimensionally stacked chips supporting high throughput interconnect topologies. This paper demonstrates the potential of optoelectronic integrated VLSI systems for providing extremely dense and lightweight solutions in applications such as image processing.
