Wafer-scale integration (WSI) technology has the potential to improve avionics system reliability substantially and enable the development of airborne-compatible supercomputers for real-time machine intelligence and new forms of sensor integration. Companion technologies in the areas of advanced packaging, cooling and photonics will need to be integrated with WSI in order to achieve these goals. The author discusses the International advanced Robotics Programme (IARP), which identified an opportunity to develop advanced robotics for medical and healthcare applications. As a result of this initiative, a feasibility study was commissioned by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to identify specific targets for robotics within the healthcare field. Three prime candidates were selected: a surgery assistant, a patient handler, and a fetch and carry robot for the disabled. Each of these is now the subject of a detailed project definition study by a consortium of industrial, academic and medical institutions. These studies should result in a user-driven specification for the three advanced robots and lead to the construction of demonstrator systems in 1991-2.< >

Jet engine behavior can be described by four major engine parameters and by their temporal and qualitative relationships. These parameters are rotational speeds of the low and high pressure turbine assemblies referred to as N1 and N2 respectively, exhaust gas temperature EGT, and combustion temperature COMBT. Normally, these parameters show stable readings. Faulty conditions like fuel interruption or bearing loss cause significant variations in the values of these parameters. These variations have been transformed into structural representations involving instances and events. Every instance node is associated with a moment in time when a significant change occurs in the value of a parameter, and the node stores information related to this moment. An event stores information related to the happenings between two instances. Our analysis of engine behavior under normal and faulty conditions has illustrated several important features called descriptors which contribute significantly to diagnosing and predicting faults. These descriptors are generated from temporal and qualitative features derived from sensor data and from relationships between these features. For example, a temporal sequence of instances and events created by a parameter variation forms a pattern. These temporal patterns and their interparameter relationships are described by descriptors. Similarly, inter-parameter and intra-parameter qualitative relationships are described by descriptors. The learning system described in this paper (LEBEX) first extracts these descriptors from normal and faulty engine behavior examples and represents them hierarchically in the knowledge base. The processes of generalization and specilaization (by comparison) is applied to these descriptors to finally produce characteristic and discriminant descriptors. The design of a multiple electronic sensor acquisition and display workstation for advanced tactical surveillance applications is described. The design addresses a number of digital image-processing concerns, including geometry registration, integration of multiple-sensor and multiple-time-frame data, feature extraction, and gray-level preprocessing. The workstation development is part of a program whose long-term objective is to develop electronic sensors and associated information processing systems that will increase the effectiveness and survivability of tactical forces.

A model for simulating the total IR radiant exitance from a user-definable set of group features is discussed. The model considers the 3-5- mu m and 8-14- mu m bands. The sun is the primary source of illumination but skyglow is also considered. Attenuation due to absorption by H//2O, CO//2, haze, and rain is calculated. By specifying latitude, longitude, time of day, and day of year, the program calculates the position of the sun. If desired, the air temperature will be calculated;if not, the temperature may be assigned.

A realtime infrared scene generation capability is being developed for the advanced Simulation Center located at the U. S. Army Missile Command. This new capability will be provided by a database driven scene generator system based upon technical activities originally funded by DARPA. The new system will permit missile sensorsystems to have input scene information generated for much more complex scenes than have been possible in the past. The scenes will be developed using computer aided design tools and these scenes will be constructed from individual models and background data.

The advances in machine vision technology have been substantial in recent years, with the introduction of faster, more powerful processors and the improvements in sensor technology (i. e. , solid state cameras. One area that is often neglected in machine vision applications is lighting considerations. Often, complicated and expensive hardware and software are used to solve a vision problem where some attention to the 'front end' (lighting and optics) would have solved the problem.
