Autonomous robots for survey and control tasks are increasingly used in environments which can not or not easily be explored by humans. The autonomy of such platforms is based on representation or mappings of the local environment into which the robot is immersed. advanced autonomous systems in natural environments typically record, evaluate and finally use a multitude of sensor data, e.g. for navigation or sample retrieval. Depending on the type of parameter a single sensor may be sufficient, but more often arrays of the same sensor type are distributed over the robot in order to provide the necessary data. As an example of a distributed sensor network we describe in the present paper the skin of an autonomous underwater vehicle. The vehicle is inspired by a manta ray: size and locomotion are the bionic copy of a ray. The skin of the vehicle is a textile which is permeable for water and spanned over the internal skeleton of the vehicle. The aim of the project "Roboskin" is to equip that skin with an array of sensor nodes to detect touch, nine axis-orientation, and pressure. The touch sensors, three on each wing, form the human machine interfaces [HMI] for the control of the vehicle by a diver. Orientation sensors are used for the self-representation of the robot movement and pressure sensors do monitor pressure distribution inside the vehicle while moving. Additional large area coils around the circumference of both wings are used for the detection of metals, which are related to the use case of the robot. The skin is equipped with a four wire bus structure stitched onto the skin of the robot. Two wires are for data (controller area network (CAN)-bus) and two for energy transmission. Touch sensors and metal detectors are likewise realized by stitching respective coils onto the skin. At defined positions "sensor housings" are joined up in the bus structure by plug connectors and mechanically fixed to the skin. They contain a connector structure for the miniaturized

Robotic applications necessitate robust, compact, and adaptable computing solutions to address the demands of real-time control, data processing, and seamless integration with diverse sensors and actuators. This research work endeavors to harness the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module to craft an optimized computing platform tailored explicitly for robotic applications. The aim is to give a solution that combines the processing power needed for advanced robotic functionality with the ecosystem flexibility of the Raspberry Pi. The system architecture mandates efficient communication between actuators, sensors, and the master controller. To facilitate this communication, protocols such as CAN Bus, I2C, and EtherCAT are employed. These protocols serve as the conduits through which data is transmitted to and from the respective slave devices. By integrating EtherCAT master firmware and middleware libraries, the system ensures seamless communication with EtherCAT slave devices, thereby guaranteeing deterministic operation and precise synchronization throughout the network.

This paper explores a high-precision temperature measurement system for ship engines utilizing thermocouple sensors, addressing deficiencies in precision and response speed present in current technologies. By integrating an optimized sensor arrangement with advanced data processing algorithms, this system delivers stable and accurate temperature monitoring in extreme conditions. The study employs the Omega KMQSS-125U-12 type K thermocouple, paired with the AD8495 precision amplifier and a high-accuracy ADC for data collection and signal conditioning. Results indicate that the system significantly enhances the accuracy and timeliness of temperature monitoring, thereby improving data reliability and stability. Moreover, the system's design incorporates scalability and safety considerations, and utilizes ECharts for data visualization, enhancing user interaction and operational convenience. The development of this technology not only advances technical progress in the field of marine engineering but also provides valuable insights for similar applications.

The growing concerns over air quality and environmental pollution necessitate advanced real-time monitoring systems capable of providing accurate environmental data. This paper introduces a scalable framework for real-time environmental sensing using the Raspberry Pi as the core processing unit. The system integrates multiple sensors: the DHT-11 for humidity and temperature, and the MQ-2 is a Smoke detecting sensor, and MQ-135 for detecting gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. This integration allows for continuous monitoring and data acquisition essential for both urban and industrial applications. The system's performance is evaluated based on accuracy, response time, and reliability under various conditions, demonstrating its effectiveness in delivering real-time, precise measurements. Its cost-efficiency and scalability make it suitable for both large-scale urban monitoring networks and localized industrial environments. Additionally, the system's flexibility in sensor integration and data processing capabilities provides a robust foundation for future advancements in environmental monitoring technologies. This work advances the field of IoT-based environmental sensing by addressing the challenges of sensor integration and real-time data processing on a cost-effective platform like the Raspberry Pi, contributing to improve environmental monitoring and public health initiatives.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely employed in a wide range of applications; because of technological improvements, extremely small sensors are now widely accessible, and their utilisation decreases costs. Because of power and computational limits, wireless network protocols cannot be used on networks with small nodes. We propose a node authentication for nodes in WSNs to avoid security threats and create secure communication between them, based on our understanding of the importance of security in WSNs and the resource constraints of small WSNs. In the proposed Protocol, a base station (S) creates and maintains a secret value and a random number is present in each sensor node. The sensor node authenticates itself by using a secret value and hash functions. Timestamps promotes freshness, efficiency, and durability. Because the proposed protocol is lightweight cryptography, it necessitates little computing, communication, and storage resources. The proposed mechanism’s security analysis revealed no security flaws, and it was discovered to have lower storage, communication, and compute overheads. As a result, the proposed is best suited for WSNs with small nodes.

Internet of Things (IoT) is rising as one of the keystones of our society. The ability to gather information from our environment enhances the decision-making processes and is crucial for our prosperity. One of the main needs of IoT is the self-sustainable supply of energy to the sensors. Among the available environmental sources, heat can be harvested by means of thermoelectric devices. Earlier, the group developed all-Si based μTEGs with planar architecture. This approach benefits from silicon (Si) and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies for the downsizing and scalability, and from the fact that Si is abundant and environmentally sound. This work reports on a procedure to reliably place a heat sink on top of the devices, and on how this has improved the power output to match IoT demands (10-100 μW/cm2). Moreover, we present the results of the performance stability with time studies of the μTEGs power generation in optimal working conditions (load matching conditions). These studies have been carried out by exposing the μTEGs, with the integrated heat sink, to constant temperatures for a week. The μTEG with the heat sink shows an increase in the generated voltage of up to six times with respect to that of a bare μTEG, leading to output powers well within the range of IoT needs. When placing the μTEG on top of a heat source above 200 °C and in still air convection conditions it generates more than 10 μW/cm2. When exposed to the same temperatures and to an airflow of 1.3 m/s (equivalent to a light breeze) the power density increases to values above 80 μW/cm2. These results demonstrate the validity of the μTEGs with heat sink as power supplies for IoT applications at the microscale. © 2023 IEEE.

There are a number of micro-and nanometer-scale manufacturing processes, which demand or would highly benefit from tools allowing high-spatial-resolution quality control for identification of defect spots and defective parts. These may include, for example, fabrication of microfluidic components or micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) as well as certain processes and technological steps in semiconductor and electronics industries. Addressing this need, we have developed a scanning probe microscope that utilizes optical confocal distance sensor and near-fields of microwaves to probe and image samples and parts with a sub-micrometer spatial resolution, which exceeds the resolution of the available optical tools. The near-field microwave probe remains out of contact with the part/sample surface during imaging to prevent or dramatically reduce the probe damage and wear-out. The main foreseen use of the microscope is high-spatial-resolution inspection of parts with varying surface shape and/or electrical properties (dielectric constant and conductivity). As demonstrate in Fig. 1, the lateral spatial resolution of the microwave near-field probing of the tool is better than $1 \mu \mathrm{~m}$, which exceeds the resolution of about $2 \mu \mathrm{~m}$ of far-field optical systems currently employed in industry. The tool can be used for inand off-line inspection of topographic features, such as channels and protrusions in microfluidic systems and MEMS. Due to the ability of microwaves to penetrate through dielectric materials the microscope can be utilized for imaging of buried structures, for example, metal lines or voids in a dielectric material (see, e.g., the review [1]), which can find applications in non-destructive failure analysis of semiconductor device packaging.

When we deploy sensors, we face severe problems to achieve resilience and robust coverage. It happens more in stochastic and dynamic environments. In this paper, we propose a hybrid framework which is a combination of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Voronoi Diagram method with context aware adaptation to fix the challenges. The proposed framework balances initial distribution of sensors and iterative optimization to enhance coverage, maintain k-coverage (k=3) and adapt to evolving scenarios even under critical situations like sensor failures. Experimental results highlight the performance of the proposed framework across the key scenarios: comparing coverage with or without context aware optimization quantifying the impact of random node failures, tracking cumulative recovery attempts and evaluating final coverage percentage. The results reveal that this hybrid framework maximizes the coverage and provides resilience to sensor failures. It also reallocates resources dynamically to maintain optimal deployment. This framework is suitable for getting more efficiency and minimal iterations of recovery while enhancing the robustness of the network. It also enlightens the adaptability in sensor performance and becomes very popular in modern applications.

Multi-sensor integrated navigation/positioning systems (MSINPS) play a crucial role in achieving precise positioning and navigation in challenging environments. By combining data from various sensors such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), cameras, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDar), MSINPS enhance accuracy and robustness, ensuring uninterrupted operation even in the event of sensor malfunction. This paper explores autonomous vehicle guidance for safe and efficient navigation, focusing on two paths of data fusion: sensor-based fusion and learning-based fusion. The effectiveness of MSINPS hinges on meticulous sensor selection and optimization to meet the requirements of autonomous navigation applications. Addressing noise, biases, and inconsistencies through data pre-processing is essential for robust data fusion. advanced fusion algorithms leveraging machine learning and deep learning techniques exhibit superior accuracy and adaptability. Furthermore, integrating MSINPS with artificial intelligence (AI) opens new avenues for navigation and positioning enhancement. This integration can lead to improvements in sensor technology and solution outcomes. Striking a balance between computational complexity and available resources promotes efficient operation while implementing fault tolerance strategies ensures system robustness across diverse environments.
