The escalating challenges posed by urbanization and rapid population growth are exacerbating the global waste crisis. The World Health Organization underscores the risks of inadequate waste management, as it contributes to the spread of diseases. To address these multifaceted issues, our research is driven by two primary objectives. Firstly, we are dedicated to designing cutting-edge smart garbage bins equipped with nine sensors, including waste level sensors to monitor bin capacity, Humidity sensors to measure moisture content, Temperature sensors for climate insights, Carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors for air quality assessment, Methane (CH4) sensors to detect potential hazards, and ambient temperature sensors to gauge environmental conditions. Secondly, our research establishes a technological backbone for real-time monitoring and informed decision-making through the seamless integration of ThingSpeak and WiFi ESP8266 technologies. In addition, we will explore three usage scenarios for this intelligent waste bin. The initial scenario (Day 1) entails the collection of sensor data throughout the first day, with measurements taken every 15 min. The second scenario (Day 5) involves the collection of sensor data on the fifth day, also at a 15-min interval. Finally, the third scenario involves continuous monitoring of the smart bin over the course of one week. In essence, our research represents a pioneering effort to harness the potential of smart bins and advanced data analysis techniques. It aspires to revolutionize waste management by introducing data-driven approaches that promise not only to improve the efficiency of waste collection and treatment but also to advance the cause of cleaner, more sustainable urban environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

A set of benchmarks, including numerical libraries and real-world scientific applications, were run on several modern ARM systems (Amazon Graviton 3/2, Futjutsu A64Fx, Ampere Altra, Thunder x2) and compared to x86 systems (Intel and AMD) as well as to hybrid Intel x86/NVIDIA GPUs systems. For benchmarking automation, the application kernel module of xDMoD was used. xDMoD is a comprehensive suite for HPC resource utilization and performance monitoring. The application kernel module enables continuous performance monitoring of HPC resources through the regular execution of user applications. It has been used on the Ookami system (one of the first USA-based Fujitsu ARM A64Fx SVE 512 systems). The applications used for this study span a variety of computational paradigms: HPCC (several HPC benchmarks), NWChem (ab initio chemistry), Open Foam(partial differential equation solver), GROMACS (biomolecular simulation), AI Benchmark Alpha (AI benchmark) and Enzo (adaptive mesh refinement). ARM performance, while generally slower, was nonetheless shown in many cases to be comparable to current x86 counterparts and often outperforms previous generations of x86 CPUs. In terms of energy efficiency, which considers both power consumption and execution time, ARM was shown in most cases to be more energy efficient than x86 processors. In cases where GPU performance was tested, the GPU systems showed the fastest speed and the highest energy efficiency. Given the high core count per node, comparable performance, and competitive pricing, current high-end ARM CPUs are already a valid choice as a primary HPC system processor. © 2023 ACM.

PLx was founded in 1955 as Precision Lapping and Optical Company, producing highly accurate optical domes, lenses, prisms, and mirrors. In the 1970’s the invention of the hollow retroreflector by PLx enabled work on mission-critical projects for military and space applications. PLx’s proprietary technologies and manufacturing capabilities with high-performance optical systems are renowned for performing under the harshest environmental conditions such as extreme temperature, combat and deep space while maintaining near-perfect accuracy over time. In 2000 PLx invented the Monolithic Optical Structure Technology™ (M.O.S.T.) [1]. M.O.S.T is a unique optical innovation that combines all the elements of a complex optical design into a single monolithic unit - creating superb optical and thermal stability as well as unsurpassed shock and vibration resistance. Today, PLx continues to push the boundaries of boresighting and targeting. With their exceptional stability, PLx’s boresighting systems have been repeatedly proven in the field. This paper will expand upon the M.O.S.T. solution with case studies of M.O.S.T. designs and results for specific applications, such as laser delay line systems, boresighting, and telescope alignment systems. Other applications can utilize this novel technology, such as spectroscopy, interferometry, LIDAR, free space optics, laser tracking, laser cavities, satellites, boresighting, laser beam steering systems, alignment, or sensors.

Highly sensitive trace-gas sensors are required in a large range of applications, such as biological, environmental, industrial, and fundamental physics. Photoacoustic spectroscopy has the advantages of compactness and robustness and is characterized by a high degree of flexibility in its configuration, in particular in the selection of the laser source and the transducer. Here we report the experimental characterization of new silicon-based Micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) structures to be applied as acoustic-to-voltage transducers in a photo-acoustic-based sensor. In our setup, a 4.5 mu m continuous wave quantum cascade laser is used to address strong N2O roto-vibrational transition, and the detection of MEMS oscillations is performed via a balanced interferometric readout.

The current developments in the energy system especially the increased integration of renewable and the introduction of dynamic loads lead to a decoupling of consumption and production. Digitalization is one of the major tools for grid operators to tackle these challenges, as it allows them to implement flexible and advanced operation and planning strategies, which reduce costs while increasing service security. In the context of operation, transformers represent one of the most important assets in the transmission grid. Their optimal utilization is of utmost importance to ensure the optimal operation for dependable feed-in. The article presents the project x-AMINOR, which aims for the development of novel minimal invasive transformer monitoring solutions designed to complement existing monitoring strategies to enable continuous monitoring over a transformer’s entire life cycle to improve its operation. Recently, Rydberg atoms have attracted increasing interests for applications as electric field sensors, RF spectrometers, and microwave receivers. In this paper, we present experimental studies of a cesium (Cs) Rydberg atomic microwave receiver and its temporal response characteristics to amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. The receiver is associated with the Cs Rydberg transitions of n(2)D(5/2) - (n+1)P-2(3/2) at various frequencies, which is generated by double- resonance laser excitations in a room temperature Cs vapor cell. We use the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) effects to directly receive modulated microwave signals and recover the data encoded in the carriers. We demonstrated AM and FM digital data transmissions at data rates up to 1 Mbps and BPSK modulation and demodulation with a clock frequency of 250 kHz. Modulation depths up to 90% are experimentally observed and studied as a function of the modulation clock frequency. We also perform modeling to show that Cs atoms have accessible Rydberg transitions at frequencies covering the range from below GHz to THz for wideband microwave receiver applications across RF systems.

Flexible temperature sensors have been studied for a long time and their performance has been improving. However, their sensitivity, response and recovery speed, reproducibility, consistency and other properties need to be further optimized and balanced for being better and more widely used in life. In this study, we report a resistive-type temperature sensor that was fabricated using a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate)/ single-wall carbon nanotubes/ reduced graphene oxide (PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs/rGO) on the polyimide (PI) substrate by rapid vacuum suction filtration and spin-coating method. This sensor exhibits a high thermal sensitivity with -0.33 % -1 temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) between 30 and 45 . Furthermore, it shows fast response and recovery speed and excellent reproducibility. As demonstration, the temperature sensor was applied in monitoring daily life sensations, such as exhaling, finger touching and the temperature change of the body skin surface. The flexible temperature sensor shows great potential in towards various applications, such as electronic skins, robot sensors, human-machine interface, and environmental temperature measurement. © 2022 IEEE.

An integrated system for processing sensor data has been developed based on novel variational autoencoder (VAE) algorithms with explainability that significantly eases analysis of sensor data. By continuously updating a generative model of the data, the system assists users with minimal artificial intelligence (AI) training or experience to perform data analysis. The system performs an extensive range of integrated machine learning (ML) tasks: anomaly detection, active learning, model-drift detection, synthetic data generation, semi-supervised classification, and counterfactual explanation generation. When the system is provided a data schema (map of Booleans, integers, reals, categories, time series, etc.) and data set, it automatically forms a preliminary generative model of the data. The construction of the system is modular, so new data types can be added as necessary. Counterfactually explainable anomaly detection is immediately performed via sparse gradient search. This informs the user how to interactively remove or repair bad records and/or begin labeling records of interest. The addition of labels to the data allows multi-class, semi-supervised, counterfactually explainable classification via the support vector machine embedded hyperplane algorithm (SVM-EH). Once some labels are added, active learning is used to assist further labeling by suggesting data elements that are highly likely to improve classification accuracy, significantly accelerating the labeling process by trading human effort for computational cycles. In production, the system detects when its training is becoming stale and requests retraining. Classification accuracy is demonstrated to be comparable to other deep learning systems on benchmark data sets.
