With the enormous amount of data collected by unobtrusive sensors, the potential of utilizing these data and applying various multi-modal advanced analytics on them is numerous and promising. However, taking advantage of the ever-growing data requires high-performance data-handling systems to enable high data scalability and easy data accessibility. This paper demonstrates robust design, developments, and techniques of a hierarchical time-indexed database for decision support systems leveraging irregular and sporadic time series data from sensor systems, e.g., wearables or environmental. We propose a technique that leverages the flexibility of general purpose, high-scalability database systems, while integrating data analytics focused column stores that leverage hierarchical time indexing, compression, and dense raw numeric data storage. We have evaluated the performance characteristics and tradeoffs of each to understand the data access latencies and storage requirements, which are key elements for capacity planning for scalable systems.

This work, which explores the performance of the existing five IoT sensor classification algorithms and develops five more algorithms, intends to later compare the obtained classification accuracies. In this evaluation, the algorithms included are Decision Tree, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, and Naive Bayes, while the proposed ones are called EdgeNet, IoTBoost, EdgeSVM, DeepEdge, and EdgeFusionNet. The performances are evaluated using the key measures of precision and processing time. Results show that the algorithms under study are usually more accurate than well-known ones, with EdgeFusionNet reaching 94% accuracy which is the highest accuracy. In the selection of algorithms, existing ones show different performance but the Decision Tree and Naive Bayes demonstrate relatively faster processing times compared to the Random Forest and the Support Vector Machine. Yet, the proposed EdgeSVM algorithm shows almost the fastest processing time which exceeds Zokfl2 and other algorithms onference. On top of that, extra measures comprise memory usage, energy efficiency, scalability, model size, and robustness are evaluated for the suggested algorithms. Thus, the results may be inferred that the suggested algorithms provide the advanced solutions for the IoT sensor data classification, that have higher accuracy and comparable or better time complexity in comparison with the existing ones. These outcomes give useful information for researchers as well as technicians that using IoT techniques for the sake of various applications purposes. © 2024 IEEE.

Stroke is one the most dangerous disease all across the world which would lead to serious disability or death among all aged people due to changes in environmental factors. Recent reports indicate that a mere 75 million people will suffer from stroke-related disabilities by the year 2030. It was also identified that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds on average across the globe. One out of every five stroke-related patients would die in a year. A Recent health survey indicates that most developed countries face a high number of stroke patients in very recent years. There is also a rapid growth in the number of stroke cases in developing countries. To prevent the high-risk factors related to stroke diseases, there is much need for continuous observation of physiological signals in real-time and to analyze the data. One of the main strategies is wearable technology that employs wireless sensor networks to link numerous medical devices and associated systems. They have to ability to function independently across several platforms. Wearable devices are used in most medical applications because of their noteworthy qualities, including adaptability, versatility, inexpensiveness, and efficiency in various platforms. Integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) with wearable devices and Fog Computing provides a more flexible mechanism to deploy a continuous healthcare monitoring system to monitor vital symptoms and to detect the early phase of stroke factors instantly. To predict stroke-related disorders, this research proposes a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN)-centric healthcare system for continuous monitoring and examination of physiological signals. Initially, the proposed model predicts the nature of the symptoms based on the parameters collected by the IoT sensors. Deep learning techniques are then applied to predict the risk factors that are critical to the stroke patient during the emergency condition. Double-Band Metasurface Infrared Optics for Integrated Multichannel Spectral sensors

Simultaneously identifying the composition of mixtures and determining their concentration levels has aroused much attention in recent years to meet the large demands of compact and low-cost infrared spectral sensors to replace their conventional bulky counterparts with costly separated infrared components. In this work, we propose a design method for multichannel metasurface infrared array optics covering two bands middle-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) for construction of integrated infrared gas sensors. The use of metasurface microstructures with the same height realizes the effective filtering and focusing of electromagnetic waves at multiple wavelengths in both infrared bands, which is beneficial to decrease the manufacturing costs. Four-channel metasurface lens arrays and filter arrays with operating wavelengths of 3.5, 9.7, 10.6, and 3.9 mu m corresponding to the infrared absorption peaks of three gases of ethanol, ammonia, ethylene, and one reference wavelength, respectively, were designed and produced by photolithographic patterning and dry etching processes on silicon substrates. The multichannel metasurface infrared optics have the advantages of easy fabrication and integration with wideband infrared detector array to form a compact infrared spectral detector, which meets the requirements of small volume and low cost to advanced infrared spectral sensors for applications in portable smart sensing systems and the Internet of Things.

Different from the previously reported cryogenic temperature measurement based on the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor, we propose a novel cryogenic temperature measurement scheme with a fiber interferometric sensor. The proposed sensor is constructed by the extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) which is consisted of a ceramic ferrule, a copper sleeve and two fiber ends. Under the cryogenic surrounding, the cavity length of the EFPI will change with the thermal deformation of the copper sleeve. With liquid nitrogen, the surrounding temperature can be changed from 77K to room temperature, and as high as 2.246nm/K of the temperature sensitivity can be achieved at a temperature range from 113K-153K in the experiment, with a 12.38 mu m EFPI cavity. The proposed interferometric sensor will still have relatively high sensitivity at a temperature lower than 77K according to our numerical simulation, so, has good application prospect in cryogenic temperature environment.

The design and analysis of wearable, reshaped rectangular patch antenna with resonant frequency of 2.5 GHz is proposed. The proposed antenna can be used as a microstrip sensor for wearable applications, which is made flexible and compact by using Arlon AD 1000 with thickness 1.6 mm and high dielectric constant 10.2, as the dielectric substrate. The miniaturization is further achieved by reshaping the rectangular patch which makes the overall dimensions of antenna as 25x25x1.6 mm3. Using the Ansys High-Frequency Structure Simulator software, various parameters like return loss, gain, VSWR, radiation efficiency and directivity are examined and validated using finite element approach. Proposed antenna exhibits a gain of 2.4275 dB, -25.6686 dB return loss, -10 dB bandwidth of 123 MHz, and directivity of 3.2742 dB, according to the simulation findings. Because of its compact design and flexibility, the proposed antenna can be employed as a microstrip sensor in Wireless Body Area Network applications. © 2022 IEEE.

Intelligent edge vision tasks encounter the critical challenge of ensuring power and latency efficiency due to the typically heavy computational load they impose on edge platforms. This work leverages one of the first "Artificial Intelligence (AI) in sensor" vision platforms, IMx500 by Sony, to achieve ultra-fast and ultra-low-power end-to-end edge vision applications. We evaluate the IMx500 and compare it to other edge platforms, such as the Google Coral Dev Micro and Sony Spresense, by exploring gaze estimation as a case study. We propose TinyTracker, a highly efficient, fully quantized model for 2D gaze estimation designed to maximize the performance of the edge vision systems considered in this study. TinyTracker achieves a 41x size reduction (similar to 600Kb) compared to iTracker [1] without significant loss in gaze estimation accuracy (maximum of 0.16 cm when fully quantized). TinyTracker's deployment on the Sony IMx500 vision sensor results in end-to-end latency of around 19ms. The camera takes around 17.9ms to read, process and transmit the pixels to the accelerator. The inference time of the network is 0.86ms with an additional 0.24 ms for retrieving the results from the sensor. The overall energy consumption of the end-to-end system is 4.9 mJ, including 0.06 mJ for inference. The end-to-end study shows that IMx500 is 1.7x faster than Coral Micro (19ms vs 34.4ms) and 7x more power efficient (4.9mJ VS 34.2mJ).

This paper investigates a bipolar structure voltage sensor based on the principle of capacitive coupling. The non-contact voltage sensor, based on electric field coupling, offers advantages such as simple structure, excellent insulation performance, and fast response. A bipolar differential electrode structure was designed for the sensor, and by reducing the internal resistance of the voltage follower circuit, the measurement stability and accuracy were improved. Simulation and experimental results indicate that the sensor can effectively detect electric field variations in a uniformly distributed field and exhibits good linear response in both low-frequency and power-frequency signal measurements, showing great potential for future applications.
