Spectral analysis of light is at the heart of countless scientific discoveries, techniques, and instruments. Miniaturized spectrometers have recently seen great advances, but combining low complexity with high performance remains challenging. We have recently introduced a novel integrated photonic spectrometer based on imaging of wavelength-dependent light propagation patterns in multi-mode interference (MMI) waveguides, followed by machine learning analysis with suitable techniques. A spectral resolution of 0.05 nm and resolving power of 16,000 were demonstrated in the near-infrared range, along with broadband operation in the visible spectrum, and the integration of four spectrometers in an array on a single chip. Stable operation of the device over extended periods of time is critical for many applications. Here, we introduce a robust approach for achieving long-term fiber-to-chip coupling by permanent attachment of a single-mode fiber to the input waveguide in a custom-made device holder. A mechanically stable and permanent coupling method, employing a UV-curable adhesive with minimal shrinkage, ensures precise and lasting alignment. This technique significantly enhances spectrometer stability and performance under environmental and mechanical perturbations. Over a week-long evaluation, the permanently coupled spectrometer demonstrated exceptional spectral accuracy and stability, with only a modest similar to 10% power reduction, in stark contrast to the rapid misalignment observed in free-space coupled systems. Accurate spectral reconstruction using a convolutional neural network was maintained throughout the testing period. Future work will focus on extending operational testing durations, advanced packaging solutions, and adaptations for remote and real-time applications, cementing the practicality of MMI waveguide-based spectrometry in diverse real-world environments.

The story of making self-driving cars goes back to the early 20th of the last century. First trials began in the 50th. In almost the same time first ideas were launched about the design of an artificial intelligence. Alan Turing expressed already in 1947 the idea to make a machine that can learn from experience by training a network of artificial neurons. However, the Dartmouth Workshop organized by John McCarthy is credited with introducing the term "artificial intelligence AI". Since this time both the making of self-driving cars and AI based technologies have experienced several ups and downs. Nowadays AI is considered as a key enabler for the construction and the operation of self-driving cars. In this paper we review the challenges and the state of the art of self-driving cars, the evolution and current state of AI technologies, and the risks of using AI for operating self-driving cars. Toyotas Gill Pratt mentioned already in 2017 "The idea that only the chauffeur mode of autonomy, where the car drives for you, that that's the only way to make the car safer and to save lives, that's just false. There are tremendous numbers of ways to support a human driver." Keeping this focus on driver assistance systems in mind, we are discussing opportunities on how advanced optical sensors can help to reduce the risks of self-driving cars, especially in unfavorable visual and weather conditions.

Recent years have seen increasing traction to enable new applications that can localize sensors on the screen of an Augmented Reality (AR) device (e.g. smartphone, tablet) so that sensors can be controlled more intuitively. Despite recent advances in this area, both wireless signal dependent and computer vision based localization solutions have seen a slow acceptance due to signal noise, multipath effect, and limited AR device-sensor interactivity. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to combine the complementary advantages of wireless signal based localization solution with the computer vision based solution to track IoT devices and sensors more accurately. Experimental result shows that our system can accurately track IoT devices with an average pixel error of 34 pixels in a 1024 x 768 pixels image, which is a 75.8% improvement from the state-of-the-art model.

sensor-based human activity recognition (S-HAR) has found applications in various domains such as medical care, sports player tracking, and health monitoring using smart wearable devices. Among the different types of sensors used in S-HAR, inertial sensors have gained popularity. Researchers have made significant progress in S-HAR systems over the past decade by employing machine learning (ML) techniques. However, the effectiveness of ML approaches was limited because they relied on manually designed feature extraction methods. To overcome this limitation, researchers have developed deep learning (DL) methodologies that automate the feature extraction process from sensor data. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of an attention mechanism in improving the identification capabilities of DL models. We introduced an efficient method called efficient channel attention (ECA) to enhance the performance of advanced DL models in HAR. To evaluate the progress, we utilized the UCI-HAR dataset, a publicly available benchmark dataset that records six distinct human behaviors in daily living. Five baseline DL models, namely CNN, LSTM, BiLSTM, GRU, and BiGRU, were employed. The ECA mechanism was then incorporated into these models. The experimental findings demonstrate that the proposed ECA mechanism has the potential to improve the recognition capabilities of S-HAR.

The study presents an innovative device for real-time counting and identification of adult mosquitoes, integrating IoT technologies, infrared sensors, and machine learning algorithms. The device enhances the functionality of the existing ECODEV trap by offering high accuracy, low cost, energy autonomy, and the capability for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of mosquito populations. The system's architecture is based on sensors that capture mosquito movements and transmit the data via GSM to a central server for analysis. Users can monitor the measurements in real-time through maps and applications. The device was successfully tested, achieving a counting accuracy of 93.29%, surpassing traditional systems. In the future, this technology could be expanded to other applications, such as agriculture and livestock management.

In this paper, a magnetic field sensor based on Terfenol-D coated optical fibers is proposed and demonstrated. In our scheme, standard single mode fibers are coated by a thick layer of a magnetostrictive composite consisting of Terfenol-D particles dispersed in a polymer, which is then utilized as sensing elements. The magnetic field-induced strain on single mode fibers coated by the Terfenol-D was interrogated by an optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the magnetostrictive fiber sensor depends on the coating characteristics including the surface of coated optical fiber. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 0.175 mu epsilon/mT.

This paper presents a photomechanical micro-mass resonator with high sensitivity based on trampoline-type graphene film. The sensor consists of a trampoline-shaped graphene film, an empty core fiber (HCF) and a single-mode fiber end face to form a closed Fabry-Perot resonator, which is based on an all-optical system, and uses the micro-mass sensing principle of cavity photomechanical effect to detect the micro-mass. The change of Au mass will change the tension of the trampoline-type graphene film, thus changing the mechanical resonance frequency of the resonator. By monitoring the resonant frequency of the trampoline-type graphene film resonator, the change of the increased Au mass can be detected, and the micro-mass sensing response sensitivity of the photomechanical resonator is 1129.844 kHz/ng. At the same time, the thickness of Au film is measured by atomic force microscope (AFM), and the mass of Au on the trampoline-type graphene film resonator is calculated to be 5.884×10-10 g, and the mass resolution of the prepared trampoline-type graphene film resonator is below 10-10 g. The sensor has a wide range of applications in microbalance mass sensing, including antigen detection, cellulase hydrolysis, cell adhesion research, environmental monitoring and so on. © 2025 SPIE.

In this work, we present a novel design of Smart Chair for Bio medical Application. The main purpose of this proposal is to implement health monitoring system of patients to check medical history using Internet of things. For that we had used various parameter of sensor embedded with chair to read patient's vital signs automatically whenever patient sit on a chair. Apart from that we are using RFID (Radio frequency Identification) card interface with chair for personal identification of patients in hospitals particularly with name, age, health problem etc. Hence, our proposal can be achieved in two cases for hospital as well as for home. At home Smart chair can be used for senior citizen or handicap people for regular check-up while sitting on a chair whenever required. In this case, if physiological parameter (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, pulse rate, body weight and temperature) reads vital signs all matched to its normal value then it indicates green light. And if 3 to 4 parameters get abnormal or varying then it indicates red light and gives alarm notification through android app to the doctor or nearby hospital staffs through alert message in case of emergency, to take appropriate action. In our case we are using Android app or display screen to display the data or results through Wi-Fi module via internet and can be access it from anywhere and anytime. Here, we are storing patient medical history through android application for future reference. © 2023 IEEE.

An evidential sensory fusion using 2D feature and 3D shape information method is proposed to recognize the occluded object. For the applications of robotic object fetching, the conventional object recognition methods usually applied the algorithms separately from 2D texture matching or 3D shape fitting. It often causes the wrong recognition results when the objects are occluded. The motivation in this study is to enhance the occluded object recognition via the estimate fusion method from the RGB-D sensor, which provides both 2D image and 3D depth information. To associate the 3D shape with the 2D texture, the region of interest (ROI) is firstly captured in 3D coordinate system, and mapped onto the 2D image. The Dempster-Shafer (DS) evidence theory is applied to fuse the confidences from the recognitions of both 2D texture and 3D shape to increase the recognition rate of occluded objects. The experimental results successfully demonstrate that the proposed evidence fusion recognizes the sample object correctly where it usually has the lower confidences from 2D and 3D recognition algorithms alone, when it operates in a separate fashion. © 2022 IEEE.

Infrared cameras could serve automotive applications by delivering breakthrough perception systems for both in-cabin passengers monitoring and car surrounding. However, low-cost and high-throughput manufacturing methods are essential to sustain the growth in thermal imaging markets for automotive applications, and for other close-to-consumer applications, which have a fast growth potential. With the reduction of the pixel pitch of microbolometer detectors, their cost has decreased considerably and now the optical part represents a significant part of the system cost. Fast low cost infrared lenses suitable for microbolometers are already sold by companies like Umicore, Lightpath, FLIR. Chalcogenide glasses are widely used as materials for optics because they have many cost advantages, especially due to the possibility of mass molding the optics. However, with the reduction of the pixel pitch, it is more and more difficult to design high performance lenses with a limited number of optics. The possibility of molding the optics allows us to use many highly aspherical surfaces at affordable costs. However, Chalcogenide glasses have usually a lower refractive index than other more expensive infrared materials such as Germanium. Indeed, high refractive index materials are known to be effective in attenuating the amplitude of many geometric aberrations. In this presentation, we evaluate the interest of high index Chalcogenide lenses, especially TGG and TGS, to design optical systems meeting the needs of the automobile with a limited number of optics. TGG glass has an index of refraction of 3.396 at a wavelength of 10 mu m, i.e. its index of refraction is close to the Silicon one and was initially studied for space applications. TGS has a lower index of refraction (3.12@10 mu m) but can be used in a cost effective manufacturing process by using flash spark plasma sintering (SPS) on raw powder. Demonstrators with TGG glass have been made and their performance evaluated.
