Smart agriculture applications are a promising path to the future of modern farming. Building smart agriculture applications is a complex undertaking that requires considering different factors, such as the technology that can be used to implement the applications. These factors require advanced skills in software construction, such as handling the distributed setting for smart agriculture applications. As such, implementing smart agriculture applications requires engaging experienced developers with the skills to tackle the issues mentioned above. Low code development tools have risen that domain experts (e.g., agricultural extension workers that give advice to farmers) outside software engineering can use to construct software applications. The low code development tools provide visual programming environments that developers can use intuitively to construct applications. However, the existing low code development tools do not offer support for low infrastructure networking that sensors can use to communicate directly to mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets), computation at the edge, and offline accessibility capabilities at the edge that are crucial for smart agriculture applications. In this paper, we present DisCoPar-K, a low code development tool that supports the properties mentioned above for implementing smart agriculture applications. We show how DisCoPar-K can improve the development of smart agriculture applications by implementing smart agriculture use cases on it.

Modern on-road navigation systems heavily depend on integrating speed measurements with inertial navigation systems (INS) and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Telemetry-based applications typically source speed data from the On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system. However, the method of deriving speed, as well as the types of sensors used to measure wheel speed, differs across vehicles. These differences result in varying error characteristics that must be accounted for in navigation and autonomy applications. This paper addresses this gap by examining the diverse speed-sensing technologies employed in standard automotive systems and alternative techniques used in advanced systems designed for higher levels of autonomy, such as advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS), Autonomous Driving (AD), or surveying applications. We propose a method to identify the type of speed sensor in a vehicle and present strategies for accurately modeling its error characteristics. To validate our approach, we collected and analyzed data from three long real road trajectories conducted in urban environments in Toronto and Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The results underscore the critical role of integrating multiple sensor modalities to achieve more accurate speed estimation, thus improving automotive navigation state estimation, particularly in GNSS-denied environments.

This study introduces a vision system that can acquire images at high speeds and high resolutions. Image sensors are used not only in digital still cameras but also in various applications that require capturing wide luminance differences beyond human perception. For example, fast, high-resolution object recognition, and motion tracking in automatic driving systems are essential, particularly in dark tunnels or the mid-summer sunshine. However, the resolution, frame rate, pixel size, and dynamic range should be traded off to achieve a high performance in capturing moving objects with a high contrast. We have developed a high-speed vision system with a readout operation of 1000 fps, resolution of 4K x 4K, dynamic range of 110 dB, and fine pixels of 2.7 mu m. These characteristics were achieved using several technologies such as 1) coded exposure (CE), which divides the image plane into smaller blocks and controls the exposure time of each block individually, 2) arrangement of analog-to-digital converters in parallel for each block, and 3) three-dimensional wafer stacking, which enables high-density integration of circuits and pixels. The proposed system can be applied in CE-based computational imaging in addition to high-dynamic-range applications for handling both the dark and bright areas in a scene.

This study presents a novel in situ high-temperature fiber optic Raman probe that enables the study of the physical properties and structure of molten samples at temperatures up to 1400 degrees C. To demonstrate the functionality of the hightemperature fiber optic Raman probe, different composition mold fluxes were evaluated in this report. The Raman spectra at flux molten temperature were successfully collected and analyzed. A deconvolution algorithm was employed to identify peaks in the spectra associated with the molecular structure of the components in each sample. The experimental results demonstrate that the composition- dependent Raman signal shift can be detected at high temperatures, indicating that molten materials analysis using a high-temperature Raman system shows significant promise. This flexible and reliable high-temperature Raman measurement method has great potential for various applications, such as materials development, composition and structure monitoring during high-temperature processing, chemical identification, and process monitoring in industrial production.

A bent core-offset in-line fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZIs) is proposed for refractive index (RI) sensing. After simply bending, not only the RI sensitivity but also the temperature sensitivity can be enhanced as the bending radius decreases. To solve the cross-sensitivity problem, a simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature was carried out. When the bending radius is 35.64 mm, the highest RI sensitivity of -44.55 nm/RIU for the RI range from 1.333 to 1.373, and the highest temperature sensitivity of 0.0799 nm/degrees C for the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 60 degrees C were measured simultaneously.

Performance of a Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) system in a fielded application depends on observability from existing monitoring equipment and sensing, which get determined at the design phase. Although various technologies have been proposed in the literature, there is currently a lack of known generic tools specifically designed for performing design stage sensor placement analyses from a PHM perspective. This leads to PHM observability being an afterthought and resulting PHM designs being sub-optimal. This paper describes a new Optimal sensor Placement (OSP) framework, its implementation as a toolkit and the experience with applying it to a new product design in the context of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR). The formulation adds multiple important features that are critical to PHM applications. Firstly, it establishes a direct link to PHM performance requirements with intent to reduce operational and maintenance costs. Moreover, it acknowledges and accounts for the costs and risks of errors that PHM system will incur, and simultaneously considers operational requirements on sensing for performance, control and/or regulatory requirements. The toolkit described here implements formulations of a large number of requirements scenarios applicable in a generic industrial product development setting. © 2023 Prognostics and Health Management Society. The article deals with the development of a modified ontological model for the formation and application of a knowledge base for the selection of methods for solving problems of applied photogrammetry in various fields, such as mapping, archaeology and aerial photography. This is relevant, in particular, for automating the design of problem-oriented systems of applied photogrammetry, as well as for fast tracking of new methods, which is difficult to perform manually. The proposed solution is based on the use of a fuzzy ontology containing information about different photogrammetry methods, imaging conditions, equipment parameters and desired results. To integrate new methods into the knowledge base it is proposed to use a combination of modern methods of natural language processing and machine learning, and to store the information about the methods in the form of text descriptions. This allows to automatically determine the optimal methods for a particular photogrammetry task, taking into account the conditions of surveying and the desired results. The paper describes in detail the structure of the ontology with modifications that take into account the current trends in the subject area, in particular the use of mobile devices, as well as the algorithm for integrating new methods and the potential advantages of the proposed solution. The paper also describes the potential of the developed system to improve the efficiency, accuracy and automation of method selection in photogrammetry, which can significantly improve the results of practical applications of photogrammetry in various fields. © 2024 IEEE.

As civilization as a whole, the manufacturing sector, and energy consumption keeps expanding, it is vital to keep developing advanced, automated monitoring applications and instruments that will enhance the accuracy of environmental monitoring data as well as the efficiency of the ecological tracking system. Solutions for environmental monitoring have evolved into SEM systems that now include contemporary sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT technology, facilitated by wireless sensor networks and IoT devices, expedites environmental monitoring by enabling efficient real-time data collection, aggregation, and transmission. However, there is a possibility of outliers called anomalies, which comprise noisy data because of random errors. These anomalies are because of sensor malfunctioning, hardware error, power supply error, ambient environmental change, abnormal weather phenomena, etc. As anomaly detection deals with reducing the errors in data, humans cannot do this on their own, hence automation is essential, which can be done using machine learning algorithms. Current algorithms give better accuracy with univariate data distributions, but in multivariate distributions, they don't work that well. There aren't any high-accuracy algorithms for data with complex anomalies which are often observed in the real world, which gives a further scope for detection of anomalies. This work aims to identify anomaly detection algorithms that can provide better accuracy for multivariate distributions. By putting in our knowledge of sensors working better anomaly detection is possible. As a result, it is feasible to more effectively balance the efficiency and precision of anomaly detection in large data sets containing elevated dimensionality problems. © 2023 IEEE.

The accurate quantification of scattered laser radiation is crucial for estimating threats to humans from outdoor applications of high-power lasers. In addition to the hazard due to intrabeam viewing, specular and diffuse reflections from irradiated targets can potentially harm the human eye and skin. Measurement techniques for the detection of scattered laser radiation have been developed in the way to provide quantitative information for advanced analyses as well as proofs and further improvements of laser safety calculations. The detection system has to be calibrated, characterized and validated in order to obtain reliable results. A compact and wavelength-specific detection system is presented, which relies on the technical specifications (i.e. entrance aperture and angular field) according to German laser safety policies. The mobile detection system is deployed at the DLR laser test range in Lampoldshausen (Germany). Field measurements are performed by irradiating metallic targets with high-power laser radiation at 1030 nm and simultaneously measuring the scattered laser radiation with the calibrated detection system. The field of view of the detection system is oriented to the target by using an alignment laser integrated into the detection system. Target samples with different surface roughness are examined in the experiments to analyze specularly and diffusely scattered laser radiation. The dependence of the scattering angle and the distance from the metallic targets to the detection system are investigated. The results are compared to threshold limits of laser safety standards.
