IoT deployments collect sensor data in supply chains, industrial monitoring, and smart environments. Raw sensor data is sent to remote dashboards or the cloud. Raw data have limited insights compared to processed data, which enables valuable insights through predictive analytics and rule-based alerts. Existing data-sharing middleware, like publish-subscribe frameworks, lacks on-the-fly data processing. This forces users to handle raw data. Built-in data processing in middleware reduces user process management overhead and provides near real-time insights. We propose a novel Publish-Process-Subscribe (PPS) middleware that provides on-the-fly data processing abilities while preserving the loose coupling benefits of the publish-subscribe paradigm. Our middleware simplifies the process management efforts for the end users by allowing them to register processes and map them to real-time data streams. Besides, PPS dynamically allocates computing resources based on the data rate and perceived processing demands. As a result, the end-users receive processed data in near real-time without manually setting up processing nodes. Experimental results show that our PPS offers significant benefits at the cost of minimal performance overhead compared to the traditional publish-subscribe middleware. We conclude that the significant reductions in replicated computations among subscribers outweigh the overheads of our framework, rendering it an attractive option for predictive supply chains.

This research presents a real-time vital sign monitoring system utilizing IoT and wearable technology aiming to provide continuous health monitoring. The system is developed using an ESP32 microcontroller unit (MCU) integrated with various biomedical and environmental sensors including an ECG sensor, temperature sensor, humidity sensor, gyroscope sensor, SPO2 sensor, and heartbeat sensor. A 16x2 LCD provides local feedback, while a buzzer alerts users to abnormal conditions. To facilitate remote monitoring, NODEMCU (ESP8266) serves as a communication gateway, connecting the system to the IoT platform UBIDOTS. Through UBIDOTS, the system transmits vital data to cloud storage in real-time, enabling healthcare professionals and caretakers to monitor patients remotely. This solution is designed to support the early detection of critical health issues, improve patient outcomes, and enhance accessibility to health monitoring through scalable IoT solutions. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system effectively monitors vital signs, sending alerts and updating data in real-time demonstrating its potential in wearable health monitoring applications.

The AFIT sensor and Scene Emulation Tool (ASSET) is a physics-based model used to generate synthetic data sets of wide field-of-view (WFOV) electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors with realistic radiometric properties, noise characteristics, and sensor artifacts. This effort evaluates the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNS) trained on samples of real space-based hyperspectral data paired with panchromatic imagery as a method of generating synthetic hyperspectral reflectance data from wide-band imagery inputs to improve the radiometric accuracy of ASSET. Further, the effort demonstrates how these updates will improve ASSET's radiometric accuracy through comparisons to NASA's moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS). In order to place the development of synthetic hyperspectral reflectance data in context, the scene generation process implemented in ASSET is also presented in detail.

On digital computers, the hue, saturation, and lightness (HSL) image model is especially useful in feature detection, image segmentation, and other operations in robot vision, object recognition, etc. On the quantum computing paradigm, such a model was only recently formulated and many new inroads with it are just beginning. Our study proposes a scheme to secure quantum images encoded using the quantum HSL (QHSL) image model. The proposed QHSL encryption scheme (or simply QHES) utilises logistic mapping to induce the chaotic system at the heart of the QHES strategy. The scheme consists of a quantum logistic chaos unit composed of quantum arithmetic modules to generate chaotic sequences. This is followed by a quantum logistic key generation that is subsequently used to encrypt the HSL components of QHSL images. The proposed scheme exploits quantum parallelism to execute its encryption procedure which leads to significant reduction in computational resources. Results of simulation-based experiments reported suggest potentials of the proposed QHES as an efficient cryptosystem on quantum computers. © 2021 IEEE.

Enhancing spatial awareness for the visually impaired is crucial for autonomy and mobility. Our research addresses this by proposing a novel approach to sensor data synchronization for assistive technologies, re-framing the challenge as a forecasting task suitable for machine learning solutions. We developed a hard hat assembly equipped with 2D LiDAR, dual 1D LiDARs, and a depth camera to create comprehensive spatial awareness for navigation. By applying various machine learning algorithms to predict 2D LiDAR readings from higher frequency 1D LiDAR data, we aimed to overcome conventional synchronization limitations. Our investigation revealed that while linear models and some non-linear approaches were inadequate, the Generalized Auto-regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model showed promise in capturing short-term volatility. Our findings contribute to assistive technologies by introducing a machine learning paradigm for sensor synchronization, potentially improving spatial awareness systems’ accuracy and reliability. This system has the potential to significantly enhance navigation for the visually impaired, fostering greater independence and safety.

This study discusses the development of a sensorless speed control method for induction motors using an adaptive PID Controller. An approach is proposed that utilizes a disturbance observer to estimate the speed of the induction motor. Subsequently, an adaptive PID Controller is implemented to regulate speed control with real-time parameter adjustments based on the motor's operating conditions. Experimental results show that the combination of these two methods enhances dynamic response performance, particularly in avoiding overshoot and steady-state error. By applying this technique, effective control is achieved without the need for additional sensor devices, leading to reduced costs and system complexity. This research makes an important contribution to the development of more efficient and reliable induction motor technology and opens avenues for further research in sensorless control applications. © 2024 The Authors.
