Due to their versatility, sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoT) have become technologies of a great importance in many modern applications in so-diverse ambits such as environmental monitoring and smart cities. Therefore, these are included in the contents of the subject "advanced sensor Network Infrastructure" of the Master on Intelligent systems on Energy and Transport of the University of Seville. This subject serves as an introduction to sensor networks, their applications, and their operating principles. Its schedule includes laboratory lessons in which the students use various sensor devices for learning about the existing communication and processing methods. The health crisis caused by the COVID-19 has made difficult that all the students have physical access to the laboratory at the same time, which forced to adapt the existing materials and facilities. In this sense, to solve this problem, a Raspberry Pi-based computer network has been deployed to allow the emulation of a sensor network while providing external remote access to the students for them to perform their laboratory tasks. At the same time, this proposal has expanded the subject contents to cover several data processing layers and architectures.

Reconfigurable photodetectors are crucial for applications such as adaptive sensing and dynamic imaging. However, conventional devices based on materials such as silicon typically require external electric fields and additional memory units, resulting in increased system complexity and energy consumption. Here, a self-driven, reconfigurable, and controllable photoresponse with a large responsivity contrast of up to 100 is achieved using a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)/MoS2 heterojunction, leveraging the integration of the reversible phase-transition capability of phase-change materials (PCMs) with the nonvolatile reconfigurable optoelectronic merits of two-dimensional (2D) materials. The reconfigurable GST/MoS2 heterojunction photodetector also demonstrates fast response times, excellent cycling stability, and a linear photocurrent-power relationship, supporting its use in real-time imaging systems. Furthermore, a 3 x 3 reconfigurable photodetector array is implemented as an optical convolution kernel for in-sensor image processing, achieving high-quality image recognition, contrast enhancement, and edge detection. This work positions phase-change-2D heterojunctions as a promising platform for next-generation reconfigurable photodetection and intelligent sensing technologies.

advanced Driving Assistance systems (ADAS) consist out of many electronics applications that assist drivers and take over safety critical functions. Reliable sensor data (e.g. Rain, ambient light, tire pressure, Radar, LiDAR, ultrasonic park-assist, etc.) are crucial in safety applications and might be a challenge under the existing and emerging radio fields to avoid systematic failure of the ADAS. The sensor data from some EMI sensitive ADAS sensor might not be reliable under foreseeable intended and unintended use. At that moment it's important to be able to detect the radio field that causes inaccurate/incorrect sensor data. This paper describes an integrated, accurate, frequency flat RF detector with programmable RF-immunity acceptance threshold and state of the art resolution. The EMI-detector is integrated in a Rain & Light-ADAS sensor IC that decides on the activation of the vehicle head lights and wipers. The design of the EMI detector allows to share pin-resources (it reuses the light sensor input pin and allows concurrent operation with the light sensor). To avoid availability issues the RF-immunity acceptance threshold - triggering safe state in this IC - can be programmed above the minimal EMI level for which the ADAS sensor is designed.

In addition to the telecom and datacom sectors, the photonic sensing sector is one of the fastest-growing markets for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The ability to combine complex and multifunctional passive and active elements on a single photonic chip, along with the adaptability of the technological platform to specific applications, opens up opportunities to construct various structures tailored to specific purposes. One of the most popular solutions for PIC-based sensors involves the implementation of ring resonators. Unfortunately, these structures are highly sensitive to production variations, often causing issues with the predictability and repeatability of the entire sensing system. Promising alternatives to these elements are Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs), which offer lower manufacturing variability and greater design flexibility, however, at the cost of increasing the final size of the PIC chip. In this work, we present and discuss the results of modeling and designing sensors based on MZI structures on a sol-gel-derived HYPHa (SiO2/TiO2) technological platform. Sol-gel aqueous phase deposition and the possibility of direct nanoimprinting of waveguide structures enable low-cost fabrication of integrated devices with low propagation loss. The study considers the impact of changes in the refractive index resulting from partial and/or complete coverage of the sensing area with the tested substance. Selective coverage of the sensor with the tested substance, although requiring an additional manufacturing process, allows for significant improvement in sensitivity. We tested both variants in several sensing systems, designed and fabricated for three different wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared regions (633, 1310, and 1550 nm), with the maximal sensitivity of over 32000 nm/RIU for the sensor designed for 1550 nm.

We propose a novelty system to manage Traffic Priority at city intersections by means of our Mobility-Hub (M-Hub), a next-generation Traffic Light Controller that leverages the power of cloud-edge continuum computing, Digital Twin, and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2x) technologies to transform traffic management into a dynamic and intelligent system. M-Hub acts as an open-edge computing platform, enabling real-time data processing, 3rd parties containerized applications and decision-making at the network edge. COGNIT is an open-source cloud-edge continuum framework, that offers many improvements for next-generation Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS). The continuum allows for the integration of diverse data sources, including vehicular data from C-V2x communication, real-time traffic information from detectors or cameras, and other environmental data, to seamlessly generate Digital Twins in the ACISA smart mobility platform, SATURNO. By combining this data with advanced traffic optimization algorithms implemented in the COGNIT infrastructure, M-Hub can dynamically adjust traffic signal timings, optimize traffic flow, and reduce congestion with optimal use of computational resources. M-Hub has the potential to revolutionize urban mobility, enhancing safety, improving efficiency, and reducing environmental impact. ©2024 European Union.

In this article, a new design based on a circular polarized antenna array 2x2 for use in wearable devices is presented. The objective of this work is to implement an efficient wireless power transfer (WPT). Our approach consist to address remote medical sensors using the 5.8 GHz ISM frequency band. We have carried out a detailed simulation of a rectenna system (a combination of antenna and rectifier circuit) for wireless energy transfer. The simulation model was developed to evaluate the system's performance in terms of transmitted power and energy efficiency. The proposed receiver antenna not only exhibits excellent performance but also achieves an impressive gain of 9.47dB. The results obtained demonstrated the feasibility of remote wireless energy transfer in the medical field, using the 5.8 GHz ISM frequency band. The results of this research contribute to the development of more advanced and autonomous wireless medical monitoring systems, enabling better quality of care and greater flexibility in medical applications. © 2023 IEEE.

A High Range-to-Resolution Multiaxis μForce and Torque Sensing Platform

This article presents a novel multiaxis mu Force sensor with a range-to-resolution ratio of 55 000, which makes the sensing device highly useful for wide range of applications. The presented device relies on a sensing strategy where a 2-D encoded micropattern is encrypted to the mobile part of the compliant platform. This encoded pattern allows multiaxis visual sensing of displacements over a long range, whereas Fourier computations ensure subpixel interpolation leading to the high resolution. The device is fabricated on a silicon wafer by means of clean room technology to comply with both precision encoding requirements and reliable mechanical behavior. This article presents the design, modeling, and fabrication as well as the experimental validation of the multiaxis mu Force-Torque sensor. A modeling strategy is proposed for an effective estimation of force/torque with its capability to adapt nonlinear stiffness evolution during the external loading. Experimentation demonstrates a sensing resolution of 2 mu N over a validated range of 110 mN. The proposed sensor measures the force along the two planar axes, and also the torque along the axis orthogonal to the plane, thus, validating its axial decoupling capabilities.

This paper presents an ultra-wideband implantable antenna designed for brain-machine interface, covering the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band from 2.4 to 2.48 GHz. The antenna, integrated into a phantom to evaluate coupling effects, is constructed using a substrate of Rogers 3006, and a superstrate composed of the same material featuring thicknesses of 0.13 mm and 0.25 mm, respectively. These materials exhibit advantageous dielectric characteristics, such as flexibility, conformable structure, and biocompatibility, making them suitable for medical applications. To maintain the attributes of an electrically small radiator and ensure optimal performance, the antenna is designed with dimensions of 3.3 x 4 x 0.38 mm3. Open-ended slots in the radiating element facilitate antenna miniaturization, enhance impedance matching, and broaden the bandwidth. Notably, the antenna achieves a peak gain of -22.5 dBi and an impedance-matched bandwidth of 12.5% within the ISM band. Finite element simulations were conducted using HFSS (High-Frequency Structure Simulator) in a homogeneous environment to evaluate the performance of the implantable antenna. Validation of the results was achieved using CST (Computer Simulation Technology), demonstrating the robustness and reliability of the obtained outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.
