Industrial software ecosystems refer to a network of interdependent actors, co-creating value through a shared technological platform specifically tailored to industrial sectors. Developing, maintaining, and orchestrating such platforms involves many challenges that require complex decision making. Experimentation can help alleviate this complexity and reduce decision uncertainty and bias. However, experimentation requires certain organizational, infrastructural, and data-related prerequisites which can be uniquely challenging to achieve in industrial software ecosystems. Through semi-structured interviews with 25 industry professionals involved in various roles across 17 ecosystems, we analyze the difficulties faced in conducting effective experiments in such environments. The interview protocol covered aspects related to the methodologies, data handling processes, and current experimentation practices, as well as the challenges faced by practitioners who engage in experimentation initiatives. The study findings reveal technical, organizational, and market-related challenges, detailing the complexities facing experimentation initiatives in industrial software ecosystems. The findings are presented in an actionable manner, following a model that allows business-oriented alignment of architecture, process, and organizational evolution strategies. The study identifies key impediments, such as data integration difficulties, stringent regulatory environments, and prevailing organizational cultures that hinder continuous experimentation practices. Our analysis provides a foundation for understanding the unique challenges facing experimentation efforts in industrial software ecosystems and offers insights into potential strategies to improve the effectiveness of these initiatives.

advanced plasma-resistant materials are crucial in space electric propulsion (EP) systems, where plasma-facing components face intense high-energy interactions. These materials have the potential to significantly increase system lifespan and efficiency by withstanding the harsh plasma environment, thereby ensuring more robust and effective operation in space missions. Our recent work in a new category of robust materials, VCMs (volumetrically complex materials), allows optimization of additively manufactured materials that exploit the "self-healing" and geometric trapping of open-cell and porous architectures under extreme plasma-facing conditions. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of VCMs for space propulsion by covering recent advances in topics including sputtering theory, specific applications, VCM experimental findings, and ion-solid interaction simulations to illustrate how VCMs can provide optimized materials to redefine next-generation space propulsion systems.

In this paper, we present an approach for integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into academic curricula, focusing on practical implementation and early exposure to multidisciplinary IoT concepts. The course structure is designed to provide hands-on experience with IoT applications in the first two semesters of an engineering degree, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills at an early stage. Through a series of nine units, students engage in experiments and mini-projects that cover essential IoT topics such as sensor and actuator integration, WiFi communication, low-energy concepts, bus systems, and audio signal processing with a minimum of theoretical introduction. The use of readily available microcontroller boards, like the ESP32-DevKitC, along with intuitive programming environments and community-developed libraries, facilitates the demystification of complex IoT technologies. The proposed approach not only enhances students' technical competencies but also fosters a sense of achievement and prepares them for advanced studies.

A flat-shaped plastic optical fiber (POF) assisted by a corrugated surface long period grating (LPG) is fabricated by a simple heat pressing and mechanical die press print method. By changing the structural parameters of the flat-shaped POF with LPG, the refractive index (RI) sensing performance of the obtained sensor are evaluated. It shows that the structure parameters of sensor affect the RI sensing performance, and the sensor with a thinner flat thickness and a deeper groove depth of the corrugated surface LPG exhibits better RI sensing performance. Moreover, the sensitivity of the sensor after removing the cladding is better than that of the sensor without removing the cladding. When the POF diameter D is 1mm, the LPG period is 300 mu m, the thickness d of flat-shaped POF without cladding is 600 mu m, and the LPG groove depth h is 200 mu m, we obtained the highest sensitivity of 591.3%/RIU with a resolution of 2.872x10(-4)RIU in the RI range of 1.3330-1.4230. The proposed sensor is a low-cost solution for RI measurement and with the features of easy fabrication, high sensitivity and intensity modulation at visible wavelengths.

SiO2 cladding YAG:Yb crystal core fiber fabricated by the modified rod-in- tube method was demonstrated as a remote sensor for partial discharge faults (PD). The spectra of the crystal fiber and PD fault standard source were measured. When the applied voltage of the PD source is 36 kV, the detection pulse intensity of the sensor decays exponentially with the change of the distance from the PD source to the sensing probe (SSD). Its decay trend in the range of 0-25 cm conforms to the Beer-Lambert law. When the fixed SSD is 7 cm and the applied voltage range of the PD source varies from 35 to 39 kV, the pulse frequency detected by the sensor has a good linear relationship with the applied voltage (R-2 = 0.99279). The experimental results indicate that the crystal optical fiber sensor can realize the remote sensing of PD monitoring.

Skill transfer from humans to robots is challenging. Presently, many researchers focus on capturing only position or joint angle data from humans to teach the robots. Even though this approach has yielded impressive results for grasping applications, reconstructing motion for object handling or fine manipulation from a human hand to a robot hand has been sparsely explored. Humans use tactile feedback to adjust their motion to various objects, but capturing and reproducing the applied forces is an open research question. In this paper we introduce a wearable fingertip tactile sensor, which captures the distributed 3-axis force vectors on the fingertip. The fingertip tactile sensor is interchangeable between the human hand and the robot hand, meaning that it can also be assembled to fit on a robot hand such as the Allegro hand. This paper presents the structural aspects of the sensor as well as the methodology and approach used to design, manufacture, and calibrate the sensor. The sensor is able to measure forces accurately with a mean absolute error of 0.21, 0.16, and 0.44 Newtons in x, Y, and Z directions, respectively.
