Fabrication of electronic devices on flexible substrates is gradually increasing due to its wide range of applications, flexibility in the substrate facilitates to use the devices in a mechanically stressed environments. In this work, flexible devices are fabricated to sense the volatile organic compound like ammonia using Titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2). TiO2 nanoparticles are synthesized by using hydrolysis and then characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (xRD) to get the material properties. Further, electrodes are deposited on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate with a channel length of 100 μm using the lift-off method. Then, the TiO2 is deposited using a drop casting method to sense the ammonia gas. At room temperature devices detect minimum 50 ppm and performance is stable for three months. © 2024 IEEE.

The performance of object detection systems in automotive solutions must be as high as possible, with minimal response time and, due to the often battery-powered operation, low energy consumption. When designing such solutions, we therefore face challenges typical for embedded vision systems: the problem of fitting algorithms of high memory and computational complexity into small low-power devices. In this paper we propose PowerYOLO - a mixed precision solution, which targets three essential elements of such application. First, we propose a system based on a Dynamic Vision sensor (DVS), a novel sensor, that offers low power requirements and operates well in conditions with variable illumination. It is these features that may make event cameras a preferential choice over frame cameras in some applications. Second, to ensure high accuracy and low memory and computational complexity, we propose to use 4-bit width Powers-of-Two (PoT) quantisation for convolution weights of the YOLO detector, with all other parameters quantised linearly. Finally, we embrace from PoT scheme and replace multiplication with bit-shifting to increase the efficiency of hardware acceleration of such solution, with a special convolution-batch normalisation fusion scheme. The use of specific sensor with PoT quantisation and special batch normalisation fusion leads to a unique system with almost 8x reduction in memory complexity and vast computational simplifications, with relation to a standard approach. This efficient system achieves high accuracy of mAP 0.301 on the GEN1 DVS dataset, marking the new state-of-the-art for such compressed model.

Soft Robotics experiments necessitate advanced measurement techniques to track robot pose and deformations accurately. Electromagnetic tracking systems provide substantial benefits over vision-based systems, especially in capturing both the position and orientation of a robot's surface without occlusion issues. However, these systems are typically designed for applications in controlled environments, with multiple guidelines stated by the producers, necessitating an evaluation of their effectiveness in different contexts. This paper presents a series of foundational experiments to assess the capabilities and limitations of such a system in Soft Robotics. We investigate the impact of distance from the base station, resistance to environmental interference, effects of metallic elements, and the accuracy of rotational measurements. The results demonstrate a significant influence of positional accuracy relative to the distance from the transmitter, with a tenfold decrease in accuracy observed. Additionally, the presence of metallic objects in close proximity (less than 20mm) to the probes adversely affects accuracy, as do large metallic elements such as construction materials. This effect is particularly pronounced when the sampling frequency of the system aligns with multiples of the electrical network frequency, resulting in more than a tenfold reduction in accuracy.

This work presents a novel printed and flexible sensor for detecting nitrite (NO2-) using a hybrid nanocomposite composed of carbon black (CB), polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and 4-aminophenol (AP). We prepared the NO2- sensor using a combination of simple mixed materials, and a moderate drying temperature of 40°. The sensor has two linear response ranges to NO2- from 25 μM to 1 mM and from 1 to 50 mM, with a detection limit of 25 μM at room temperature. Our results show that the sensor displays appropriate selectivity towards 50 μM of NO2- in the presence of potentially interfering anions and organic compounds that may be present in human urine. We propose that the sensing mechanism is based on the physical electrostatic interaction of NO2- molecules with AP's positively charged amine groups. This interaction results in a reduction of the electrical resistance when the sensor is exposed to NO2- anions. Our work highlights the potential of this printed sensor as a reliable and accurate tool for NO2- detection in medical applications. © 2023 IEEE.

In the contemporary landscape, the agricultural sector has undergone transformational changes, embracing progressive dynamics through the integration of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. The amalgamation of IoT and ML models emerges as a strategic choice to enhance data analytics, aiming at a substantial improvement in both the quantity and quality of agricultural yields. This paper seeks to elucidate the synergistic interaction of various agrarian elements, orchestrating the computational prowess facilitated by ML models and data derived from IoT sensors transmitted through LoRa-based Wireless sensor Network (WSN) infrastructure. The proposed system advocates a comprehensive three-tier architectural framework, wherein ML and IoT systems collaborate seamlessly to process data for field management. The envisioned system extends its utility by translating these predictions into visually comprehensible representations. The integrated approach signifies a departure from conventional methods, offering a novel pathway to ensure the sustainability of yield, encompassing both production and grading standards. With the increasingly busy lifestyles of people, advanced maintenance systems such as automated feeding has become of utmost importance to aquarium owners. Despite existing technologies, there remains a gap in smart feeding solutions tailored to the specific dietary requirements of different fish species and population sizes. This paper investigates smart fish feeding through automated detection, counting, classification and feeding of fishes within aquariums. As part of this paper, a smart population-driven aquarium maintenance system, named AquaTrack, is proposed that integrates Internet of Things (IoT), computer vision, machine learning, and sensor technologies. The system detects, classifies, and counts fish, adjusting feeding amounts based on species and population to mitigate the risks of overfeeding and underfeeding, which can significantly affect water quality. The system was evaluated through four research questions, where a general accuracy of 76.9% in fish species identification and 77.1% in fish counting were found. While promising outcomes were observed under specific conditions, variability and limitations in performance across different scenarios were also noted. Environmental factors such as lighting, reflections, shadows, and particulate matter affected the accuracies, particularly in scenarios involving smaller fish quantities. Based on these findings, the study recommends further refinement of the system to enhance its capabilities. © 2024 IEEE.

Currently, developments in mechatronics have enabled the creation of compliant actuators and synthetic muscles, surpassing the constraints of inflexible actuators in assistive robotics systems. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are comprised of an elastomer layer situated amidst two flexible electrodes, able to change dimensions under the influence of an electric voltage. While DEAs can function as autonomous sensors due to their viscoelastic behavior, accurately measuring actuator displacement continues to be an unresolved challenge. In this study, we introduce the development and assessment of a fiber-constrained dielectric elastomer actuator (FCDEA) with embedded optical fiber sensors for displacement measurement through optical potential difference. The DEAs were fabricated with VHB 4910, conductive carbon grease, and PETG as constrain fiber to restrict its displacement to the vertical direction. Silica optical fiber was integrated in the PETG strips and clamps to measure the actuator deformation upon activation. Different fabrication parameters of DEAs were investigated to obtain greater strain rates. DEAs with 90 mm x 90 mm, stretch (lambda) = 3.6, and load (tau) = 120 kPa, and 90 mm x 110 mm, lambda=3.6, and tau=120 kPa, presented the highest deformation capacity, with 90% and 80%, respectively. Moreover, results showed great linearity between the DEA deformation and optical potential, indicating the proposed configuration is suitable for displacement measurement.

Among fiber optic acoustic sensors, Fabry-Perot sensors have attracted increasing research attention due to their high sensitivity, simple structure, and ease of preparation. The vibrating diaphragm of Fabry-Perot sensors is the key to achieve high performance. Compared to traditional diaphragms based on metal or polymer, 2D materials with the features of high Young's modulus and ultra-thinness are ideal diaphragm materials for significantly enhancing the acoustic sensitivity and broadening frequency range of the sensors. In this work, graphene oxide is used as the vibrating diaphragm due to the water solubility and the ease of thin-film preparation. In order to improve the stability of the system, we have developed a phase demodulation method using three orthogonal signals. The three-path phase-shifting algorithm can eliminate the effect of DC offset from the unstable optical signal. Our graphene oxide-based Fabry-Perot acoustic sensor can test and demodulate the vibration signal in real-time, demonstrating long-term stability and insensitivity to changes in light intensity. © 2023 SPIE.

This study presents a scientometric analysis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensor research, leveraging data visualizations generated by VOSviewer to elucidate the field's evolving trends and dichotomies. Through a detailed examination of clustered terms, our analysis distinguishes two primary research trajectories: technological and material developments (Cluster 1) versus application-oriented investigations, primarily in biological contexts (Cluster 2). Cluster 1 emphasizes the critical roles of catalysis and metal nanoparticles in enhancing sensor selectivity and sensitivity, highlighting the integration of chemistry and biosensing techniques to overcome the challenge of developing highly sensitive H2O2 sensors. Meanwhile, Cluster 2 explores the use of H2O2 sensing in biomedical and clinical applications, including glucose monitoring for diabetes management and the potential of H2O2 as a biomarker for oxidative stress and cancer diagnosis. This division reflects a comprehensive approach that spans controlled laboratory experiments to potential medical applications, underlining the significance of H2O2 in linking material science advancements with biomedical application development. Our findings reveal the complexity of H2O2 detection systems and identify the primary challenge of improving sensor performance to broaden their biological application. This analysis underscores the importance of a cross-sectoral strategy in advancing H2O2 sensor innovation, crucial for healthcare monitoring and environmental pollution tracking, thereby offering a comprehensive overview of the current state and future directions in H2O2 sensor research.

Free Space Optical Communication (FSO) is an emerging and promising technology that utilizes optical signals to transmit data through free space. It offers several advantages, including high data rates, low latency, security, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. FSO systems find applications in various fields, including telecommunications, satellite communication, disaster recovery, and military operations. Utilizing lasers for free space optical communication presents an appealing alternative to conventional radio frequency (RF) communication methods, particularly in managing substantial data volumes while simultaneously reducing size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements. Among the formidable challenges in the realm of satellite-based optical communication systems lies the necessity for highly precise acquisition and tracking of target satellites. Quad Photodetector (QPD) tracking sensors stand out as the preferred choice for discerning angular positions due to their rapid responsiveness and excellent accuracy. In this paper, we expound upon the operational principles and mathematical modelling of QPD-based tracking sensors, aiming to attain optimal sensitivity and meet predefined field of view (FOV) specifications. Additionally, we elucidate the focusing technique, detail the testing setup, and present the achieved outcomes of the tracking sensor. © 2024 IEEE.
