The Zernike wavefront sensor (ZWFS) stands out as one of the most sensitive optical systems for measuring the phase of an incoming wavefront, reaching photon efficiencies close to the fundamental limit. This quality, combined with the fact that it can easily measure phase discontinuities, has led to its widespread adoption in various wavefront control applications, both on the ground but also for future space-based instruments. Despite its advantages, the ZWFS faces a significant challenge due to its extremely limited dynamic range, making it particularly challenging for ground-based operations. To address this limitation, one approach is to use the ZWFS after a general adaptive optics (AO) system;however, even in this scenario, the dynamic range remains a concern. This paper investigates two optical configurations of the ZWFS: the conventional setup and its phase-shifted counterpart, which generates two distinct images of the telescope pupil. We assess the performance of various reconstruction techniques for both configurations, spanning from traditional linear reconstructors to gradient-descent-based methods. The evaluation encompasses simulations and experimental tests conducted on the Santa cruz Extreme Adaptive optics Lab (SEAL) bench at UCSC. Our findings demonstrate that certain innovative reconstruction techniques introduced in this study significantly enhance the dynamic range of the ZWFS, particularly when utilizing the phase-shifted version.

Diagnostic data analysis is a methodological process aimed at the identification of underlying causes of events, the effect of which is the presence of trends and patterns in a multidimensional dataset. Since in most cases this cause originates in the area described by the data itself, knowledge from the field of data analysis, computer science or statistics is rarely enough for the analyst to explain the patterns, and it is necessary to examine the field of data expertise itself. In this work, we focus on creating a model for diagnostic data analysis, which automatically describes naturally correlated pairs of attributes using a large language model and provides an output in the form of a Diagnostic Sheet Visualization. The proposed concept is then experimentally verified in case studies on two multidimensional datasets focused on environmental variable sensor measurements and cubic graph properties. © 2024 IEEE.

Future vehicles will be increasingly connected to enable new applications and improve safety, traffic efficiency and comfort, through the use of several wireless access technologies, ranging from vehicle-to-everything (V2x) connectivity to automotive radar sensing and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for intra-car wireless sensor networks. These technologies span the radiofrequency (RF) range, from a few hundred MHz as in intra-car network of sensors to hundreds of GHz as in automotive radars used for in-vehicle occupant detection and advanced driver assistance systems. Vehicle occupants and road users in the vicinity of the connected vehicle are thus daily immersed in a multi-source and multi-band electromagnetic field (EMF) generated by such technologies. This paper is the first comprehensive and specific survey about EMF exposure generated by the whole ensemble of connectivity technologies in cars. For each technology we describe the main characteristics, relevant standards, the application domain, and the typical deployment in modern cars. We then extensively describe the EMF exposure scenarios resulting from such technologies by resuming and comparing the outcomes from past studies on the exposure in the car. Results from past studies suggested that in no case EMF exposure was above the safe limits for the general population. Finally, open challenges for a more realistic characterization of the EMF exposure scenario in the connected car are discussed.

The paper articulates an exploration into the integration of wearable devices for remote patient data monitoring, which marks a transformative shift in healthcare practices. This transition is underscored by user-centric interfaces and applications, enabling convenient remote monitoring. However, the escalating concern of patient data vulnerability to network breaches presents a substantial impediment. In response, we introduce the proposed scheme that harnesses Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques. The main objective of the proposed scheme is to meet the exacting requirements of healthcare systems, aiming to fortify data integrity and confidentiality. Within this context, the proposed scheme unveils a sophisticated DL-driven detection model, adeptly tailored for discerning and countering data manipulation endeavors through a nuanced multi-label classification paradigm. Notably, the emphasis lies on safeguarding patient data privacy and security, which is paramount in today's information-rich landscape. The narrative seamlessly interweaves elements of wearable technology, sensor networks, advanced DL capabilities, and robust security measures, resulting in an innovative scheme. Finally, the proposed scheme is evaluated against various metrics such as accuracy and loss curve and F1, recall, and precision comparison. © 2023 IEEE.

Bionic limbs have transformed the lives of individuals with missing or damaged limbs, enabling them to regain independence using electronic sensors and motors. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in prosthetic devices, with some reaching a level of sophistication that is almost indistinguishable from natural limbs. However, not all amputees have equal access to cutting-edge technology, which motivates the research and development presented in this paper. In this study, we have designed and developed a bionic arm that can be easily manufactured using additive manufacturing, paired with a wearable sensor suit that commands the actuators to execute movements. The use of gesture-controlled wearable sensors allows for the creation of sophisticated bionic arms with applications in both civilian and military contexts. Furthermore, the team is exploring the use of advanced computer algorithms to enable fast and fluid movements, facilitating the performance of complex tasks with prosthetic limbs. This paper provides a general design overview of the bionic arm and its sensor suit, showcasing the potential of this innovative approach in revolutionizing the field of prosthetics. The use of additive manufacturing and wearable sensor technology opens up new possibilities for providing accessible and advanced prosthetic solutions for individuals with limb loss. © 2023 SPIE.

The measurement of the dissolved ozone concentration is beneficial in various areas, where ozone is applied, such as medicine, disinfection, food processing, and wastewater treatment. Especially for medical ozone therapy, the measurement directly before and during the treatment is essential to avoid over- and under-dosing. For the wide range application of ozone measurement during medical therapy and in research, low-cost and reproducible measurement devices are indispensable. We present a low-cost photometer that measures the ozone concentration with UV photometry. It consists mainly of 3D-printed parts, while all other parts are commercially available. The root mean squared percentage error of the designed photometer is 14.68% and the root mean squared error is 1.04mg l(-1). We measured concentrations between 0mg l(-1) and 19 mg l(-1), since higher concentrations cannot be produced with the ozone generator used. In principle, however, higher concentrations can also be measured with the photometer, such as the concentrations typical in ozone therapy of up to 30 mgl(-1). We achieve good measurement results with the photometer in comparison with a commercial reference measuring instrument for dissolved ozone, although the reference instrument has a mean square error of 8.2%, but is more expensive by a factor of 17 than the photometer presented here. Low-cost instruments, such as the photometer, provide accurate and inexpensive measurements that are adaptable to a wide range of applications. For example, the photometer can be used in medicine for ozone therapy. The ozone concentration can be measured directly before the injection and thus before the treatment.

This paper proposes a Distributed Moving Horizon Estimator (DMHE) for the Multi-Vehicle system localization problem using sensor Networks with sporadic measurements. Due to its capability to efficiently exploit environmental information via constraints, the proposed DHME technique is well-suited to better estimate the system state when measurements are available at time instants a priori unknown. Indeed, the use of output constraints can contribute to locally improve estimation accuracy, especially when dealing with sporadic measurements and biased sensors data. A realistic case study is proposed within the Robot Operating System framework and Gazebo to localize a Multi-Vehicle System using an inexpensive sensor Network with low-computation capabilities. A comparative campaign simulation is performed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed DMHE algorithm in terms of accuracy, computation time, and constraints handling with respect to existing results.

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) sector has ushered in an unprecedented era of connectedness, enabling a profusion of applications ranging from smart homes to industrial automation. Researchers predict that by 2030, there will be about 50 billion IoT devices and gadgets globally, completely changing how we interact with our environment. However, because these interconnected systems are vulnerable to many cyber attacks, the rise of IoT devices has also raised worries about data security and privacy. This paper investigates the potential of cryptographic approaches to mitigate IoT data security issues. It proposes an all-encompassing framework to protect IoT data from various threats and vulnerabilities. The framework leverages the robustness of the advanced Encryption Standard (AES) as the primary data encryption technology. Additionally, it integrates ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) in conjunction with Elliptic Curve Cryptography to enable fine-grained access control, ensuring that only authorized entities can access specific IoT data. Furthermore, to fortify the encryption process, the framework implements a secret sharing method for the encryption key, distributing the key across multiple entities, reducing the risk of a single point of failure. The suggested framework seeks to improve the security posture of IoT systems by integrating these cryptographic algorithms and guaranteeing the confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility of data in IoT contexts. ©2024 IEEE.

Thin metasurface structures have been used as electromagnetic sensors to measure two-dimensional (2-d) radio-frequency (RF) field distributions incident on the surface. For example the electric field distribution was detected by the lumped resistors embedded in a mushroom-shaped metasurface absorber, which worked as a short-dipole array. The resistors interconnecting the square metal patches on the surface in the x- and y-directions absorbed the incident power of the Ex and Ey polarizations at the resonance frequency of the mushroom structure [1]. While the single-layer mushroom structure provided high absorption inherently at a single resonance, a broadband characteristic was achieved by using a stacked structure of two mushroom layers [2]. The voltages on the individual resistors were monitored by RF detectors to map the 2-d amplitude and phase profiles of the RF electric field vectors incident on the surface. The measured field distributions were used for in-situ and real-time monitoring and localization of RF noise sources. The accuracy and effectiveness of the measurement technique was evaluated and confirmed for spherical wave illumination based on a numerical analysis using the plane-wave spectrum (PWS) technique [3]. The electromagnetic field of the spherical wave incident on the absorber surface was expanded into a large number of plane waves, for each of which reflected and absorbed fields were calculated by treating the metasurface as an equivalent impedance surface using an effective medium model. The plane wave fields were then synthesized to obtain the spatial distributions of the reflected and absorbed fields on the absorber surface. The results of the numerical analysis were practically in good agreement with those of electromagnetic simulations and experiments. © 2024 IEEE.
