Currently, there are various techniques for clinical diagnosis of infections. During the last pandemic caused by Sars-CoV-2, the importance and need for rapid, economical and accessible diagnostic systems became evident. Demonstrating that they are fundamental tools in the prevention and control of diseases. Thus, Point-of-Care (PoC) devices emerge as an alternative with the potential to improve access to the diagnosis of infectious diseases. These are devices that allow immediate diagnosis in low-complexity centers, reducing costs, streamlining the analysis, and, above all, considerably increasing the confidence intervals of the diagnoses. Many of the most used clinical diagnostic techniques base their determination on optical techniques, mostly colorimetric and fluorescent. These types of determinations are gaining wide attention as non-destructive tools, visible to the human eye, and capable of providing real-time and in-situ responses. The present work seeks to provide alternatives for better PoC diagnostic systems. We will focus on colorimetric determinations, widely used in nucleic acid amplification tests. However, they have the disadvantage of depending, in certain cases, on the subjectivity of the person analyzing the sample (visual diagnosis). Following this, a portable colorimetric device was developed, capable of objectively discretizing between positive and negative tests. Specifically, by performing spectral analysis of each sample and evaluating its absorbance in the visible spectrum.

Exoplanet direct imaging using adaptive optics (AO) is often limited by non-common path aberrations (NCPAs) and aberrations that are invisible to traditional pupil-plane wavefront sensors (WFSs). This can be remedied by focal-plane (FP) WFSs that characterize aberrations directly from a final science image. Photonic lanterns (PLs) can act as low-order FPWFSs with the ability to direct some light to downstream science instruments. Using a PL on the SEAL (Santa Cruz Extreme AO Laboratory) high-contrast imaging testbed, we demonstrate (1) linear ranges and (2) closed-loop control. Additionally, we simulate the use of the PL in a multi-wavefront sensor AO system, in which multiple WFSs feed back to the same common-path deformable mirror. Building on previous multi-WFS AO demonstrations on SEAL, we simulate a modulated pyramid WFS to sense aberrations of high spatial order and large amplitude, and the PL to sense low order aberrations including NCPAs. We assess adaptive optics performance in this setting using three different PL wavefront reconstruction algorithms. We also provide a new method to experimentally identify the propagation matrix of a PL, making advanced model-based algorithms practical. This work demonstrates the role of photonic technologies and multi-stage wavefront sensing in the context of extreme AO and high contrast imaging.

This paper presents the design and simulation analysis of a tunable optical integrator based on ZnS-SiO2/Ge2Sb2Te5 superlattice (GST-SL) phase change material (PCM). The transfer function of the integrator is realized through a silicon microring resonator cladded with a three-layer GST-SL (GST-SL3-MRR). The integration of the PCM into the microring resonator enables a reconfigurable Q-factor, allowing for tunable integration orders between 0.5th and 1st. Through laser-induced phase transitions between amorphous and crystalline states, the transmission spectrum of the MRR can be dynamically adjusted. Simulation results show that the integration time window reaches 300 ps for the first-order integration, and the tunable integration results closely align with the ideal mathematical predictions. demonstrating the device's highly tunable performance. Further simulations of applications for quickly solving ordinary differential equations highlight the potential applications of our device in areas such as optical signal processing and image recognition. © 2025 SPIE.

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are single-photon sensitive large-area detectors widely used in many applications. Among them, they are used in several radiation-harsh applications, like high-energy physics and experiments in space, where they receive a significant radiation dose. The effect of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation dose on their performance is very interesting for those applications. We irradiated several Silicon Photomultipliers with protons and x-ray. We investigated the noise increment and directly compared per performance worsening on several SiPM technologies produced sat FBK (Trento, Italy). We also characterized the temperature dependence of the noise down to cryogenic levels, extracting the activation energy. We investigated in depth the defects created by protons within the microcells of the SiPMs, with emission microscopy measurements. We also investigated the effect of ionizing-energy-loss in the SiPM microcells, showing a relevant effect of charge accumulation in the dielectrics and in the trenches. Some technologies demonstrated a worse radiation tolerance with an internal modification of electric fields that increases the primary noise and afterpulsing. This have been directly confirmed with a dedicated irradiation campaign comparing SiPMs with different materials inside the deep trenches between microcells. All these considerations are useful to develop new SiPM technologies that are more radiation hard, both in terms of bulk damage and ionizing-energy-loss effects.

A Comparison of Sampling Methods for Dealing with Imbalanced Wearable sensor Data in Human Activity Recognition using Deep Learning

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) holds significant implications across diverse domains, including healthcare, sports analytics, and human-computer interaction. Deep learning models demonstrate great potential in HAR, but performance is often hindered by imbalanced datasets. This study investigates the impact of class imbalance on deep learning models in HAR and conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis of various sampling techniques to mitigate this issue. The experimentation involves the PAMAP2 dataset, encompassing data collected from wearable sensors. The research includes four primary experiments. Initially, a performance baseline is established by training four deep-learning models on the imbalanced dataset. Subsequently, Synthetic Minority Over -sampling Technique (SMOTE), random under-sampling, and a hybrid sampling approach are employed to rebalance the dataset. In each experiment, Bayesian optimization is employed for hyperparameter tuning, optimizing model performance. The findings underscore the paramount importance of dataset balance, resulting in substantial improvements across critical performance metrics such as accuracy, F1 score, precision, and recall. Notably, the hybrid sampling technique, combining SMOTE and Random Undersampling, emerges as the most effective method, surpassing other approaches. This research contributes significantly to advancing the field of HAR, highlighting the necessity of addressing class imbalance in deep learning models. Furthermore, the results offer practical insights for the development of HAR systems, enhancing accuracy and reliability in real-world applications. Future works will explore alternative public datasets, more complex deep learning models, and diverse sampling techniques to further elevate the capabilities of HAR systems.

Existing broadcast techniques are challenging to meet the low-latency high-reliability requirements of advanced V2x applications. As an enhancement to broadcast, unicast mode has been introduced in 5G NR-V2x. The strategy of unicast V2V message dissemination is investigated, and the problem of maximizing k-vertex reachable nodes within h-hop is proposed. A maximum matching-based algorithm named HKVR is presented to solve the problem. Experimental results indicate that HKVR has better performance than traditional centrality-based strategies. With a few source nodes, HKVR can achieve 100% coverage for small networks;average hops can be reduced by 33% for large-scale networks with thousands of nodes. © 2024 IEEE.

Reconfigurable photodetectors are crucial for applications such as adaptive sensing and dynamic imaging. However, conventional devices based on materials such as silicon typically require external electric fields and additional memory units, resulting in increased system complexity and energy consumption. Here, a self-driven, reconfigurable, and controllable photoresponse with a large responsivity contrast of up to 100 is achieved using a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST)/MoS2 heterojunction, leveraging the integration of the reversible phase-transition capability of phase-change materials (PCMs) with the nonvolatile reconfigurable optoelectronic merits of two-dimensional (2D) materials. The reconfigurable GST/MoS2 heterojunction photodetector also demonstrates fast response times, excellent cycling stability, and a linear photocurrent-power relationship, supporting its use in real-time imaging systems. Furthermore, a 3 x 3 reconfigurable photodetector array is implemented as an optical convolution kernel for in-sensor image processing, achieving high-quality image recognition, contrast enhancement, and edge detection. This work positions phase-change-2D heterojunctions as a promising platform for next-generation reconfigurable photodetection and intelligent sensing technologies.

In the domain of autonomous driving technology, integrating diverse sensors is essential for precise 3D object detection. The fusion of the multimodal sensor data, offering unique insights like semantic richness from cameras, spatial accuracy from LiDAR, and velocity assessments from radars, is vital but poses significant challenges due to differences in format, scale, and perspective. Present research methods, including aligning multi-sensor data to a consistent perspective and developing a unified bird's eye view (BEV), attempt to mitigate these challenges while striving to preserve data integrity. To further progress in this area, we introduce PasteFusion, an innovative multimodal fusion framework tailored for 3D object detection within autonomous driving systems. This framework uniquely merges LiDAR and image data using a deformable attention mechanism combined with convolutional fusion, thereby obviating the need for intricate transformations and monocular depth estimation. Furthermore, we present the Paste-Aug algorithm, an advanced approach for harmonizing image and point cloud data augmentation. This algorithm effectively addresses occlusions in the image domain, thus reducing computational demands. Our approach has demonstrated significant improvements in 3D object detection, as evidenced by outstanding results on the nuScenes validation set, achieving a mAP of 69.4% and a NDS of 72.4%. © 2024 SPIE.

Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) platforms play a crucial role in advanced Air Mobility (AAM) initiatives, particularly in urban environments. Ensuring the safety and reliability of communication networks during air traffic operations is paramount, with communication performance heavily reliant on antenna radiation characteristics. Maintaining consistent communication throughout the entire flight is essential for flight success. However, dynamic maneuvers such as banking turns can result in airframe shadowing, where the vehicle's structure obstructs antenna signals, posing a challenge to communication reliability. This paper proposes a model integrated into eVTOL avionics to mitigate airframe shadowing issues and maintain optimal communication availability during normal flight operations. A new algorithm is proposed, and simulation studies analysis are conducted to assess the impact of airframe shadowing on eVTOL communication performance. Additionally, insights are provided to air traffic management (ATM) and pilots regarding optimal look angles to minimize or avoid airframe shadowing effects. © 2024 IEEE.
