Many offshore infrastructures have been developed to explore vast marine resources over the past several decades. In addition to the conventional fixed-type offshore infrastructures, a new class of offshore infrastructures, the so-called floating offshore infrastructures, have gained dramatically increasing applications owing to their flexible deployment and enhanced capacity in renewable energy exploitation in deep seawater. As the key functional component of the floating infrastructure, the underwater mooring systems are subject to sustained dynamic loads pertinent to marine waves and currents, which are prone to different types of failures. Identifying those mooring system failures timely and reliably thus plays a vital role in offshore infrastructure health management and maintenance. This study aims to achieve this objective by developing an integrated numerical framework that seamlessly synthesizes the physical mooring system modeling and data-driven analysis. Specifically, a high-fidelity physical model that takes into account the sophisticated fluid-structure interaction is established to mimic the underlying behavior of the mooring system. The mooring line failures are incorporated into the model to generate the respective dynamic responses. With the aid of data-driven modeling, the causative relationship between mooring line failure scenarios and dynamic responses can be characterized. Given the sensor measurement in actual practice, this framework offers a feasible solution for the failure identification of underwater mooring systems. The results clearly demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methodology.

Telemonitoring, telemedicine, and telerehabilitation are becoming essential technologies for improving health-care. Particularly useful for assessing the physical and cognitive status of frail individuals, telemonitoring has applications in elder care and neurodegenerative disease management. This study presents a smart room prototype for medium to long-term telemonitoring of frail subjects. The system captures real-time video/data from various sources, processes it with advanced AI, and displays the results for real-time viewing and control. Its modular architecture includes components like pressure floors and sensorized mattresses, integrated via a web-based interface. The system effectively evaluates subject interactions in the sensorized environment, with real-time Mobility and Sleep Indexes to track activities. © 2024 ICROS.

This research article embarks on a dual-pronged journey, ardently addressing the challenges of both localization enhancement and security fortification in the context of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Vision-based tasks of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) attracted significant research attention. Nowadays, testing a complex vision-based system using real experiments is expensive and time-consuming. This paper focuses on designing and implementing an integrated virtual simulation and test system for vision-based algorithm verification in visual perception, communication transmission, and closed-loop control of UAVs. First, a unified modular modeling process is proposed to construct the test system, which consists of a virtual environment subsystem, a vision algorithm subsystem, and a corresponding control subsystem. Although the vision algorithm and control subsystems are the same real experiments and virtual simulation, the virtual environment subsystem focuses on ensuring simulation credibility as the only difference between real and virtual experimentation. Then, some essential components are verified, including the camera model, image process, and communication of the visual sensor network. Finally, two case studies are performed to validate the efficiency and easy deployment, illustrating it as a promising platform for verifying and validating advanced guidance, navigation, and control algorithms.

Recent studies have shown that a compact self-mixing interferometer can be used for the characterization of shock waves. It measures dynamically (> 10 MHz) the changes in the refractive index induced by the shock wave. Associated to an appropriate acousto-optic model, the pressure profile is computed with a 34 mbar resolution. In the present work, we compare shock wave induced refractive index variations measurements by another method using a Michelson-type fiber-optic interferometer with phase analysis that has been developed for Photonic Doppler Velocimetry applications. The output signals of this system are processed in triature, which consists in analyzing the phase shift between the three interferometric signals. This bulkier system provides, in theory, a better resolution than the self-mixing interferometry sensing scheme. In the present paper, we compare these two optical methods to measure a shock wave pressure through experiments that were carried out with an open shock tube instrumented with commercial, bandwidth limited, pressure sensors. This configuration creates a spherical shock wave similar to those observed during on-field experiments with explosives. We describe the two measurement systems and the experimental setup design used for overpressure characterizations. Both sensing approaches have been carried out in the same experimental conditions and with shock wave pressure peak amplitudes of a few bars. We detail the two types of signal processing and we discuss the results obtained with the two optical methods, which are also compared to a piezoelectric reference sensor.

In this paper, we present a low-noise, high-gain readout hardware to be used in conjunction with (sub)mm-wave zero bias detectors, to enable high sensitivity (i.e., similar to -50 dBm) and fast (i.e., below a second at -50 dBm) power detection. The developed hardware employs a cascade of two (COTS) programmable gain amplifier (PGA), capable of reaching up to 90 dB gain (volt to volt), each providing an input referred noise level of 16 nV/root Hz. The signal is then digitized on the same board via a 500 kHz 12bit ADC, providing an SNR of 74 dB. The digitized signal is then readout via an ST microcontroller and transferred to the operator PC via a USB interface. The sensitive bias voltages for the PGAs are provided via the microcontroller, or alternatively can be fed by an external lab grade supply to further improve on the (already high) supply noise rejection from the first stage PGA. The proposed hardware is designed to interface with VDI zero bias detectors, high responsivity and low NEP diodes (around 2000 V/W and below 12 pW/root Hz, respectively) operating in monomodal waveguide bands up to 500 GHz. In this contribution we demonstrate the usage of the developed hardware with WR10, WR6.5, WR5 and WR 3 ZBD diodes.

This work proposes the development of a Mixed Reality Environment (MRE) designed to facilitate Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing through the simulation of advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS). The proposed infrastructure will enable the connection of a vehicle to a simulator, which will project images of the virtual environment onto a surface, providing the driver with an immersive experience while oper-ating the connected vehicle. The developed infrastructure will have the capability to directly acquire data from various types of simulated sensor models commonly used in ADAS systems, such as cameras, RADARs, and LiDARs. This setup will be instrumental in evaluating and studying user experience by analyzing driver behavior in response to different interfaces and alert systems. Additionally, the vehicle will be integrated into the vehicular communication network, allowing for comprehensive hardware and software testing in scenarios that pose risks to the physical integrity of the driver and Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), such as vehicle collisions and areas with frequent VRU crossings. © 2024 IEEE.

Traditional machine vision based on von Neumann architecture suffers from the limitation of memory and computing separation. With the explosive growth of data, meeting the application requirements has become challenging due to the architecture. Artificial neuromorphic vision systems (ANVS) inspired by the human visual system (HVS) are considered a viable solution. Organic synaptic devices have great potential in neuromorphic computing. We propose an artificial neural visual system (ANVS) based on organic electrochemical synaptic transistors (OEST) and a photodiode array strategy in this work. The basic biological synaptic behaviors can be successfully achieved by optical stimulation. This system successfully simulated the human visual system and was able to perform feature extraction on color images, producing results that aligned with simulation expectations. Color images can achieve a recognition rate of 99.4% after OEST-based hardware convolutional kernel processing, whereas this rate drops to only 33.4% after processing through software convolutional kernels. Comparison of the recognition rates shows that the OEST-based hardware convolutional arrays are more closely matched to the mechanisms of the human eye's retina and can recognize various color images. Overall, this work demonstrates that OEST has great potential in the field of neuromorphic vision. © 2024 SPIE.

Flexible capacitance pressure sensors have shown excellent application potential in biomedical equipment, human-computer interaction, and robotics. Herein, we propose a flexible capacitive pressure sensor based on bionic hybrid microstructures (BHM) which consists of micro-cones by facile replication of the surface of Calathea zebrina leaf and mini-domes by vacuum adsorption from through-hole arrays, respectively. The sensor presents a high pressure sensitivity of 3.17 kPa-1, and wide detection range. These promising advantages of the pressure sensor enable continuous pulse signal monitoring and heart condition analyzing of human body. This work highlights the potential of the pressure sensor in a wide range of applications, including wearable devices, robots, and human-machine interaction. © 2022 IEEE.
