Embedded systems are increasingly relying on virtual machines (VMs) to ensure portability and composability of services. To achieve high-performance and resources' isolation, the VM can be mapped to a dedicated core. In shared-memory multi/many cores architectures, the last level cache (LLC) is shared among cores. The state-of-the-art shows that interference on LLC can be a bottleneck for VM's performance. Such interference can depend on several factors, including the design of the applications, guest and host OSes, the hypervisor, and the architecture. Therefore, it is expected that studies analyze indepth each of these factors. The goal of this work is focusing on the interference that cannot be mitigated by cache isolation techniques supported by the hypervisor, for instance, those caused by host OS applications. Such interference is unpredictable and can jeopardize the performance of the guest. The contribution is a new perspective about how cache interference affects the latency of the guest application and guest OS, crossing different performance metrics in comprehensive plots. We run our experiments on Arm Cortex-A53 processor, and, as guest OS, we employ the state-of-the-art Zephyr OS. Thus, a side contribution is to show Zephyr performance facing cache interference. Our results show that interference on LLC can affect in up to +8x to slow down the guest application and up to +2.8x the subset of kernel functions which are involved for the application execution. Results also show that the guest is mostly affected when its data can fit on the LLC: after this point, the LLC saturation occurs and the host interference becomes insignificant from a guest perspective.

This paper presents a preliminary study for evaluating the quality of welds in thermomagnetic switches using 3D sensing and machine learning techniques. A 3D sensor based on laser triangulation is used to gather the point cloud of the component. The point cloud is then processed to extract hand-crafted signatures for binary classification: defective or non-defective component. Features such as Gaussian and mean curvatures, density, and quadric surface properties, are used for building these significant signatures. Different machine learning models, including decision trees, Support Vector Machines, k-nearest neighbors, random forests, ensemble classifiers, and Artificial Neural Networks, are trained using the built signatures to classify the weld as defective or non-defective. Preliminary results on actual data achieve high classification accuracy (>84%) on all the tested models. © 2023 SPIE.

Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity have drawn a lot of attention due to their potential in a range of applications, including tactile sensing, physiological monitoring, and flexible electronics. The commercialization of these sensors is still hampered by the difficulty of getting great sensitivity while keeping cheap production costs. The low-cost method for making capacitive sensors described in this study uses a sacrificial template made of a porous PDMS polymer and a dielectric layer based on MWCNT composites. When MWCNT is added to PDMS, the composite polymer's higher dielectric constant results in the sensor's high sensitivity of 4.9 kPa-1 below 1 kPa. Due to its extreme sensitivity, it can recognize minute changes in tactile pressure and pulse waveforms. © 2023 SPIE.

Nanocomposites based on 2D materials exhibit synergistic behavior at their interfaces, making them a promising candidate for gas sensing applications. The MoS2/rGO nanocomposite used in this study was synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal process. By using x-ray diffraction (xRD), the synthesized composite was thoroughly characterized. The spin coater was used to deposit the nanomaterial thin film onto the glass substrate. The nanocomposite sensing was tested at a 40 ppm concentration of ammonia gas. An increase in ammonia concentration was found to correspond with a rise in the resistance of the sensor. The nanocomposite interface of this sensor enabled it to exhibit a synergistic behavior, resulting in several desirable characteristics, including low power consumption, fast response and recovery times, high selectivity, and a low operating temperature. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Augmented reality (AR) image tracking may be used in AR-guided surgical applications for real-time guidance and quantitative feedback. With AR-guided applications allowing for broader accessibility compared to specialized systems used in traditional surgical image-guidance, we evaluated the measurement errors of monocular AR image tracking against current gold standard infrared optical and electromagnetic ( EM) tracking. A measurement stylus was designed and 3D printed, allowing for monocular AR image tracking using a Logitech C920 camera, infrared optical tracking with Northern Digital Inc. (NDI) Vicra, and EM tracking with NDI Aurora through corresponding sensor attachments. A measurement phantom was also designed and 3D printed, consisting of 3 measurement planes with 81 measurement points in each plane, totaling 243 measurement points across a 16 cm x 16 cm x 18 cm measurement volume. Pivot calibration was performed using random sample consensus (RANSAC) sphere fitting to calculate the offsets between sensor attachments to stylus tip across each tracking system. Measurements of the stylus tip were collected across the measurement phantom for each tracking system. Each system's fiducial registration error was quantified using the collected tip positions through rigid registration between the tracking system and the designed phantom points from CAD. Fiducial registration errors were 1.19 mm, 0.59 mm, and 0.51 mm for monocular AR, infrared optical, and EM tracking. Monocular AR image tracking presents a cost effective and accessible solution for surgical guidance applications. Errors close to 1 mm may be suitable for scenarios such as surgical simulators in competency-based education and AR-based planning.

Elliptic Curve Cryptography(ECC) is widespread in practical applications because compared to other asymmetric cryptosystems, ECC can achieve the same level of security with shorter key lengths. With the development of the Internet of Things(IoT), a great deal of constrained devices may require software ECC implementations. However, point multiplication, which is the most time-consuming operation, restricts the use of ECC in these devices. In order to improve the efficiency of the SM2 algorithm based on ECC in IoT, we propose an efficient and secure distributed scheme for SM2 decryption. In this proposed scheme, the SM2 private key is covertly divided into key shares of different lengths, which are then distributed to various devices to ensure the privacy of the key. Additionally, high-performance devices handle auxiliary point multiplication calculations, improving the decryption speed and alleviating the burden of local calculations. Performance analysis and experiments demonstrate that the scheme achieves nearly 3.8 times faster decryption than the standard SM2 algorithm, making it suitable for IoT applications. © 2024 SPIE.

There are many distinct commercial sensor systems for monitoring or controlling laser processes. Most of them are based on camera or photodiode technology. Furthermore, the introduction of real in-process measuring systems in laser material processing like OCT has significantly increased the safety of both defect detection and process control [5][6][7][8][9]. The focus of this contribution, however, relates to the use of artificial intelligence algorithms to "See New Things". We will discuss how classified, physical properties can be derived from already reliable process information - "seeing the unseen", so to speak. Instead of defining complex rules for algorithms, the use of Data Science and Machine Learning methods reveals hidden structures in noisy unstructured data and make it possible to find the relationships of the data to the physical measurement. There are several systems available in the market which capture or measure and analyze physical effects of the process zone and their properties during the laser processing, but none of these effects and properties stand for "seam quality" for themselves, which is typically defined by mechanical, geometrical and metallurgical properties of the solidified seam. The process properties like emitted visible and thermal radiation or geometrical values of the melt pool or the penetration depth of the laser forming the keyhole (penetration depth) only provide indications of how the desired quality might be achieved. When welding thousands of seams per shift during serial production for Li-Ion batteries in e-mobiles, very often users would like to stop their fully automatic machines once the laser process is suddenly running out of previously set boundaries. Such an approach allows users to find systematic faults where and when they occur, rather than at the end of the line where quality inspection takes place and the line is still running, producing more and more parts with the same faults. This work provides a detailed survey of the progress in dictionary-learning methods in the area of Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) systems, emphasizing the importance these techniques, in general, and the role of the methodologies in respect of growing accuracy and the efficiency, in particular, play in the tasks of identifying and classifying targets. Using an approach that combines literature review and bibliometric analysis, we unravel the history of dictionary learning in ATR, pointing out its interaction with machine learning algorithms, sparse representation, and radar imaging technologies. The core themes and innovations that shape the field are identified in the analysis aided by VOSviewer, with the integration of radar imaging and machine learning coming out as vital for developing efficient target recognition strategies. This study reveals a major trend of utilizing advanced computational models in dealing with complexities of modern surveillance and reconnaissance missions that helps increase operational efficiency in military as well as civilian applications. This review not only provides an overview of the current state of ATR research but also identifies potential developing lines, highlighting the crucial role of continuous improvement of computational algorithms and the interrelation between signal processing and machine learning for realization of unparalleled accuracy and efficiency in ATR systems.

This paper discusses the design option for a current source inverter for a 15kW high-speed machine with a wide-band-gap technology-based electric motor drive. Both control and modulation options are considered, as well as the integration of silicon carbide (SiC) bi-directional switches to yield highperformance bi-directional switches, as required by the topology. Recently, by taking advantage of the high-speed switching performance of SiC, a simple and robust control design method without voltage sensing and the Two-Third Modulation (TTM) method, which has the benefit of high efficiency, have been proposed. Based on this recent work, this paper proposes the simplified current-sensor-less controller of the CSI-fed PMSM. Also, this paper compared the characteristics of the TTM with the conventional PWM methods by simulation models.
