The primary task of establishing an intelligent energy network is to achieve the intelligent measurement of energy sources such as water, electricity, and natural gas, etc. Among them, significant progress has been made in the intelligent measurement of electricity and water, but the intelligent measurement of natural gas is still an urgent technical problem to be solved. At present, the actually used gas flow meters in the market are still traditional mechanical gas meters, which require manually recording gas meter data in each household. The data cannot be connected to the internet and cannot collect instantaneous flow values in real time, which is not conducive to real-time peak shaving of the energy network and compatibility with national intelligent energy network projects. The MEMS gas flow sensor studied in this article has the advantages of small size, light weight, low power consumption, high reliability, high sensitivity, and easy integration, which is a highly promising technical means to solve the intelligent measurement of natural gas. © 2023 SPIE.

Light field cameras hold significant value in applications such as depth estimation, 3D video acquisition, and image super-resolution. Compared to traditional single-image super-resolution methods, light field images can capture object information from multiple spatial and angular perspectives, which is more conducive to capturing detail information. However, current advanced light field super-resolution models still exhibit issues like blurriness, jaggedness, and dimness in 4x light field super-resolution. To address this, we propose a novel light field super-resolution framework that utilizes the Retinex decomposition concept to solve common problems such as ghosting and overlap, thereby improving image quality. By decomposing the light field image into illumination and reflection components and processing them separately, our model significantly enhances detail preservation and color consistency. Experimental results on multiple datasets demonstrate that our model exhibits outstanding performance, both subjectively and objectively, highlighting the effectiveness of this framework and its broad application potential in the field of computational imaging. © 2025 SPIE.

Current methods of production line compatible moisture content detection are too costly to allow for full process monitoring. Other key drawbacks of current methods include sensitivity to changes in sample color, poor sample penetration, and limited moisture content measurement range. sensors operating in the THz range could provide a solution to these problems and by carefully picking the frequency, a low-cost sensor could be developed. This work covers the development of a low-cost volumetric moisture content sensor based on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, a TI IWR1642 76 GHz automotive radar module, coupled with a sample specific calibration based on effective medium theory. The resulting sensor is orders of magnitude less expensive than competing sensors while providing measurements of volumetric moisture content accurate to within 5% dry-basis moisture content. This work includes a study of two effective medium models, the Bruggeman method and the Looyenga method, and their applicability to the moisture sensing problem as well as a detailed description of the methodology used to build these models and assess their accuracy. These effective medium models utilize known microscopic material properties to describe the macroscopic properties of mixtures. The application space that this study explored was industrial pulp and paper production where precise measurement and fast measurement of volumetric water content is crucial for ensuring product quality and consistency. Using electromagnetic radiation in the THz band to measure the water content of paper is not completely novel but previous approaches have made use of empirical calibration models which require significant time to acquire and can be sensitive to changes in calibration and application environment. © 2024 SPIE.

This paper proposes an ultrasonic sensor methodology to measure concentrations in a binary gaseous alternative fuel system of hydrogen and natural gas for automotive applications. Further, it proposes a sensing and control architecture that enables alternative fuel vehicles, in this case a series hybrid electric vehicle, to fuel and operate their conventional IC engines on variable concentrations of hydrogen and compressed natural gas (HCNG). This represents a new type of flex fueling capability namely Flex-HCNG. The proposed Flex-HCNG system includes the ability to refuel from any hydrogen or natural gas fueling station into a single high-pressure on-board storage tank and then to start and run under changing fuel concentrations. The benefits of Flex-HCNG will be greater demand for both natural gas and hydrogen by effectively increasing available fueling infrastructure and providing security through greater fuel choice. Increasing demand for hydrogen prior to widespread availability of fuel cell vehicles will facilitate faster transition to renewable hydrogen and natural gas economy.

Wide-field fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) is a promising technique for biomedical and clinic applications. Integrating with CMOS single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) sensor arrays can lead to cheaper and portable real-time FLIM systems. However, the FLIM data obtained by such sensor systems often have sophisticated noise features. There is still a lack of fast tools to recover lifetime parameters from highly noise-corrupted fluorescence signals efficiently. This paper proposes a smart wide-field FLIM system containing a 192 x 128 COMS SPAD sensor and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) embedded deep learning (DL) FLIM processor. The processor adopts a hardware-friendly and light-weighted neural network for fluorescence lifetime analysis, showing the advantages of high accuracy against noise, fast speed, and low power consumption. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed system's superior and robust performances, promising for many FLIM applications such as FLIM-guided clinical surgeries, cancer diagnosis, and biomedical imaging.

Sparkfun AS7265x is a reflectance spectroscopy sensor with a wide range of wavelengths falling in UV, Visible and IR ranges. Using this sensor, a small device was developed by assembling it with Arduino Uno to make a portable spectroscopic device. A casing was designed to encase a quartz cuvette for holding the sample. The sensor module was also put in the same case. A 16 × 2$ LCD display was integrated with the system to display the output. The reading was also observed through serial communication in the computer. The sensor could give a reading from 410 nm to 940 nm in a matter of seconds. In this range, qualitative and quantitative analysis was made. The device was then compared with a commercial UV vis spectrophotometer (Inkarp Sican 2301) with the same quantitative and qualitative test for the spectrophotometric analysis of KMnO4 solution. The Triad sensor has a lower resolution as compared to that of a spectrophotometer. It could only detect with an interval of 25 nm to 50 nm. The comparison showed that the device developed can be used for specific tests. In the quantification test of KMnO4, an R2 value of 0.9907 was achieved. This experimental design showed that applications could be extended to Point-of-Care devices for application in healthcare where spectrophotometric analysis is necessary with the combinations of reagents. It can also be combined with biosensors for accurate readout of diseases. © 2023 IEEE.

The detection of rapid dynamics in diverse physical systems is traditionally very difficult and strongly dominated by several noise contributions. Laser mode-locking, electron bunches in accelerators, and optical-triggered phases in materials are events that carry important information about the system from which they emerge. By detecting single-shot spectra with high repetition rates over long-time scales, new possibilities and applications to diagnose, control and tailor the spectral dynamics of lasers and electron beams in synchrotron and free-electron laser (FEL) accelerators open up. This contribution focuses on the latest developments of real-time, single-shot, high-repetition-rate detectors and data acquisition systems, with a special focus on emerging technologies and new possibilities in the diagnostics of rogue optical signals. © 2023 SPIE.

Overcurrent protection of silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs plays a critical role in the medium voltage (MV) applications to avoid severe damage to the hardware, and there are more challenges because of the much higher insulation voltage required and the faster switching speed of SiC devices. To measure the power device switching current under these harsh conditions, highly integrated, compatible, and strongly insulated current sensors became the major technological breakthroughs to be solved. This paper presents a heterotypic current transformer design with strong compatibility and high insulation to realize overcurrent protection. A ferrite rod wound with copper wires is placed into a vertical bar Omega shape current conductor tube. This solution can be easily integrated into bus bars or power modules. The modeling analysis and design considerations of Omega-shape copper tube are discussed. The high insulation capability was realized by encapsulating the current transformer into the high dielectric strength silicone gel. Experimental Hi-Pot test proves the insulation capability up to 5 kV. Additionally, a double pulse test is carried out to evaluate the proposed current sensor performance, which can realize 72.3ns fast response including 16ns detection time and 56.3ns action time for overcurrent protection of SiC MOSFETs.

In recent years, the increasing demand for underwater 3D measurement for various applications has brought about challenges such as low accuracy in 3D shape acquisition and difficulties in localizing sensor positions. This paper introduces a robust calibration method for underwater 3D sensors, comprising line lasers and cameras, utilizing a physically accurate model. Specifically, our proposed line laser calibration method estimates laser plane parameters using two types of planar constraints, avoiding the need for the costly process of backward-projection of refraction for optimization. For camera calibration, we advocate a two-step approach incorporating a simple yet effective deep-learning-based marker detection algorithm to estimate parameters of refraction, representing a physically correct lens model. Through experiments, we validate the superior performance of our methods over previous approximation-based approaches, as demonstrated in simulations and actual experiments conducted in a swimming pool.
