Flexible pressure sensors have gained significant attention within the research community due to their exceptional capabilities across numerous applications. Among them, piezoresistive pressure sensors have demonstrated excellent performance, thanks to their simple working mechanism, low-cost sensor fabrication methods, and the extensive range of materials available. In this study, we demonstrate a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor by following a low-cost fabrication approach that allows us to realize both the sensing layer and substrate. We utilized a sandpaper template-assisted method to achieve a micropatterned sensing substrate, while an efficient liquid-based transfer technique was used to fabricate the sensing layer. By repeating the transfer deposition method, we were able to achieve stable conductivity of the sensing layer, resulting in pressure sensitivity of 0.0002 kPa(-1) in the low-pressure range. The moderate sensitivity of the sensor was capable of detecting tactile pressure, as demonstrated by generating Morse code.

systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach for design, analyze, and manage complex systems. In the context of product development, it can be considered as a systematic methodology to ensure that all aspects of a product work together seamlessly to meet the desired objectives, which typically involves several key steps, from requirement analysis, to verification & validation steps. During each step of the systems engineering process, different decisions should be made by various stakeholders, and whether a successful product can finally be achieved is determined by these decisions to a great extent. However, most of the decisions are still made by the stakeholders according to their experiences, and a technique which can effectively support the decision-making process is still lacking. Therefore, this paper introduces some basic concepts of causal discovery, and discusses its potential applications on systems engineering. First, some basic concepts relating to systems engineering and causal discovery are introduced. Second, the potential applications of causal discovery on different steps of systems engineering are discussed. Finally, the authors draw the conclusion and point out the future research direction. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a new capture method for laser triangulation sensors consisting in replacing the lens with a slit - effectively making it a pinhole camera - and exploiting diffraction effects. This new method circumvents optical aberrations such as spherical, defocusing, coma, field curvature, and lens distortion, as well as lens flare to a point where it can be virtually ignored. Moreover, using a slit reduces the number of optical parts and simplifies the modeling of the laser spot to find its center. To test our proposed method, we generated data sets taking pictures with both a lens and a slit on different materials placed on a worm gear with its position controlled by a high-precision step motor. With this data, we extracted the center of the laser spot with different image processing algorithms. It was then possible to assess the goodness of fit of the triangulation curve using the sets of captured points by both methods. We show that not only we circumvent the adverse effects of optical aberrations and lens flares, we obtain a more accurate estimation of the actual known distance of the target. © 2023 IEEE.

The work is devoted to the analysis of the accuracy characteristics of rotation angle sensors using angular scales from nanostructured metasurfaces. The principle of their operation is based on the dependence of the frequency response of metasurfaces on the orientation of the incident light polarization plane. The influence of the noise characteristic of angle sensors on the measurement result is considered. It is shown that for the sensors considered in the work, it might be on the order of units of arc seconds. The influence on the accuracy characteristics of misalignments of the angular scale and thermal effects that the sensor may experience during operation is analyzed. Recommendations to reduce the influence of parasitic effects and further improve the accuracy characteristics are given.

Lowering heavy-duty emission thresholds towards ultra-low emission transportation systems constitute a serious challenge. Indeed, the engine and exhaust aftertreatment systems have been complexified for decades to fulfill always stricter regulations. As a result, the powertrain represents a significant part of the final vehicle price. Therefore, advanced control methods are required to meet the upcoming emission thresholds without drastically increasing the system cost and complexity. Such control designs have already shown promising results but require accurate physical estimates - particularly the oxygen content in the intake and the exhaust manifold are essential information for a precise engine and aftertreatment systems control. Although observer methods exist for such accurate and robust estimations, they are not suitable for hardware implementation due to their complexity. This paper introduces an observer to estimate oxygen content-related physical signals. The proposed method takes advantage of all existing sensors and a simple dynamic model within a sensor fusion framework. The observer is implemented in an advanced simulation platform, where the observer estimates are shown to be unbiased and robust to noise and sensor inaccuracies. These results suggest that an advanced controller combined with the proposed observer method could reduce the engine-out transient emissions without supplementary hardware cost or complexity.

With the increasing popularity of robotic applications in various fields and the important role robots play in technological innovation and high-end manufacturing, it is crucial to optimise their performance. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have greatly advanced control technology, leading to their integration into traditional robotic motion control systems, thereby enhancing performance, efficiency, and flexibility. The paper reviews traditional motion control techniques such as open-loop, closed-loop, model predictive, and adaptive control, then explores the unique capabilities of FPGAs, including parallel processing, data acceleration, system-level integration, and low-power design. These capabilities are analyzed in the context of improving sensor data processing, motion control algorithms, path planning, motor control, communication, image processing, safety, and power management in robots. The article demonstrates the advantages of using FPGAs for precise control, efficient data processing, parallel processing, and low power consumption in robot motion control. It reveals the great potential of FPGA technology in improving robot performance and efficiency. This not only provides a new path to enhance the adaptability and robustness of robots in complex environments, but also provides guidance for future technology development and industrial applications. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.

Accurate point cloud data is vital for the up-to-date representation of buildings. The use of Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS) has been prevalent for generating precise point clouds in the built environment. However, despite the development of scan planning algorithms to address issues such as occlusions and varying point densities, the significant costs and extensive time required for data acquisition and processing—often worsen by the lack of existing plans for scan planning—limit the practicality and cost-effectiveness of TLS. This necessitates the investigation of alternative methods for point cloud data collection. This study assesses the capabilities and limitations of low-cost solid-state LiDAR sensors, specifically the Livox Mid-360, in mapping the built environment. The sensor’s performance was benchmarked against TLS and onsite measurements, testing its mapping accuracy over distances ranging from 2 m to 8 m and on different materials including steel, wood, plastic, and concrete. The results demonstrate that the sensor achieves sub-centimeter accuracy within a 2 m range, with the highest accuracy on wood and the least on steel. These results validate the efficacy of low-cost solid-state LiDAR sensors for building modeling requiring centimeter-level accuracy, offering a more affordable and accessible solution for updating Building Information Modelling (BIM) model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The capture of CO2 is of paramount importance for mitigating the global climate change attributed to CO2 emissions. Existing CO2 capture and catalytic decomposition technologies are associated with elevated costs. In pursuit of more advanced materials, we have conducted a density functional theory investigation into CO2 adsorption on pristine and modified MoS2 surfaces. The outcomes reveal that Si-substituted doped MoS2 exhibits the most favorable adsorption performance, with an adsorption energy of -2.40eV and a CO2 electron loss of 0.01e. Intrinsic MoS2 exhibits an adsorption energy of -2.08eV, resulting in a CO2 electron gain of 0.02e. S-vacancy defective MoS2 demonstrates an adsorption energy of -2.10eV, leading to a CO2 electron gain of 0.03e. Computational results underscore the robust adsorption capability of Si-substituted doped MoS2, highlighting the viability of Si atom substitution as a means to enhance the adsorption properties of MoS2 for CO2 gas sensing and carbon capture applications. © 2023 IEEE.

the need of data collection in recent years has piloted into a transformative era of information utilization. The recommendation systems represent a specialized type of information filtering mechanisms designed to improve the quality of search outcomes by suggesting items that are highly related to user queries or aligned with their historical interactions. This research uses demographic filtering for a recommending popular and well rated movies to users with similar demographic backgrounds irrespective of genre or other parameters. The methodology used in this paper computes pairwise similarity scores for all movies based on the parameter of descriptions and recommend movies to the users based on that similarity score. TF ∗ IDF is used to calculate the relative frequency that is the importance of the words in description. It vectorizes the object to generate TDF-IDF matrix of plots of movies. Cosine similarity is applied to find similarities between each pair of movies. The above approach generates a matrix in which each column represents a movie and each column has a word from the overview vocabulary that appear in at least one document. This is practiced to decrease the value of words that occur frequently in plot description, and hence reduces their impact in calculating the final similarity score. Demographic and content-based filtering is used for recommendation in this paper, while demographic filtering provides a very fundamental method for recommendation and cannot be used practically, whereas content-based filtering is more advanced and powerful. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely employed in a wide range of applications;because of technological improvements, extremely small sensors are now widely accessible, and their utilisation decreases costs. Because of power and computational limits, wireless network protocols cannot be used on networks with small nodes. We propose a node authentication for nodes in WSNs to avoid security threats and create secure communication between them, based on our understanding of the importance of security in WSNs and the resource constraints of small WSNs. In the proposed Protocol, a base station (S) creates and maintains a secret value and a random number is present in each sensor node. The sensor node authenticates itself by using a secret value and hash functions. Timestamps promotes freshness, efficiency, and durability. Because the proposed protocol is lightweight cryptography, it necessitates little computing, communication, and storage resources. The proposed mechanism's security analysis revealed no security flaws, and it was discovered to have lower storage, communication, and compute overheads. As a result, the proposed is best suited for WSNs with small nodes. © 2023 IEEE.
