Today's network services and applications are widely distributed across multiple data centers around the world, and require timely transfer of big data between data centers to ensure the quality and reliability of services. Network infrastructure that connects data centers is expensive and such big data transfer would incur high cost, a large portion of which is due to the consumption of bandwidth resources. This paper aims to investigate the problem of minimizing data transfer cost in high-performance networks. We construct rigorous models for link bandwidth and link cost between data centers and formulate a Cost Minimization Bandwidth Scheduling Problem (CMBSP). Considering the differences in time and space of transmission cost, we focus on the problem of bandwidth redundancy con-sumption and cost waste caused by discontinuous time step transmission. We formulate CMBSP as an optimization problem of path selection and link bandwidth allocation, and design a cost timing allocation algorithm (CTAA), which allows users to transfer as much data as possible over inter-data center links and minimize the bandwidth cost. Simulation-based experiments in real-life network topologies such as ESnet and NSFNET show that CTAA outperforms state-of-the-art solutions. © 2023 IEEE.

Real-world service providers in Wireless sensor Networks (WSN) face the challenge of balancing two important considerations: achieving a high coverage and extending the network's lifespan. The optimization problem of coverage in WSN holds significant importance as it aims to achieve a balance between network lifetime and coverage. This encompasses the reduction of energy consumption, the enhancement of coverage rate, and the optimization of energy consumption balance. Although heterogeneities are acknowledged and addressed in certain aspects of WSNs, such as routing protocols, researchers tend to overlook their significance when it comes to node placement or deployment. This research presents a comparative examination of multi-objective node placement algorithms in WSNs, specifically focusing on their performance in heterogeneous circumstances. However, the impact of an asymmetric link, which may vary depending on the node, is not well considered in heterogeneous WSNs. The detrimental effects of link heterogeneity on the performance of deployment methods have been observed. Our investigation revealed that the thought-out strategy for exploiting heterogeneity was not used. The implementation of sensor networks based on 6G technology in smart city applications necessitates the utilization of diverse sensor nodes. In order to achieve optimal resource usage, it is imperative to take into account the heterogeneity of nodes during the deployment process. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach for the preparation of real parking data for microscopic traffic simulation or similar applications. Against the backdrop of an incomplete database given from single parking spot sensors and manual countings on a few parking spaces in Munich, the data are cleaned and expanded by various methods, e.g. a neural network to forecast the total occupancy at each hour as well as an optimization model to generate the corresponding parking times of each car. This results in a list of realistic parking events for a certain location and day. The method is transferable to other use cases regarding off-street parking spaces, particularly with an incomplete and discontinuous detection of parking occupancy and times.

Mine detection is an ongoing and growing problem that affects many people around the world due to the enormous danger that mines pose to humans. Mine detection occurs using various methods that use active sensors, including ultra-wideband (UWB) radar. Although active landmine sensors are often used for performance reasons, they can cause unintended landmine detonations because they operate on transmitted and reflected electromagnetic signals. Another way to detect mines without detonating mechanisms is the use of passive detectors. In this article, an optimal neural network structure with Adam's optimization algorithm is developed for effective mine classification based on magnetic field sensor data. This approach made it possible to increase the accuracy of mine detection to 99.23 percent. © 2023 IEEE.

The objectives of most studies are aimed at employing fog computing (FC) as an effective support to cloud computing (CC) in order to monitor sensor data and their associated necessities via the rapid advancements in Internet of Things (IoT). FC is completely dedicated to IoT sensor systems and delivers CC based computing, networking, and storage services. The cloud-Fog Collaboration (CFC) Environment will be more suitable for real-time IoT data sensing and workflow applications where fast and reliable internet connectivity is available. Workflow Scheduling means efficiently assigning the interdependent tasks to available computing resources. The workflow scheduling techniques play a significant role in minimizing the latency in Heterogeneous Computing systems (HCS). In this paper, we present a novel Hybrid-metaheuristics Multi-objective based Workflow Scheduling Algorithm (HMWSA) by combining Harmony Search (HS) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) for optimizing workflow scheduling in heterogeneous CFC. The proposed minimization objective function takes into account goals like makespan, energy usage, and cost. To preserve the precedence relationship among tasks, a topologically sorted execution sequence is constructed. Extensive testing results show that our proposed approach yields substantially better cost-makespan trade-offs while significantly reducing energy consumption than other existing algorithms. © 2023 IEEE.

With the acceleration of urbanization and the aging of infrastructure, structural health monitoring systems (SHMS) has become increasingly important in civil engineering. Traditional SHMS rely on Internet of things (IoT) sensors mounted on structures. However, this approach faces challenges such as high maintenance cost and limited accessibility. Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to carry sensors for data collection can provide greater flexibility and a clearer monitoring perspective. However, both approaches have frequent sensor failures because of the harsh operating environments and equipment wear. This leads to data loss or unreliability of the SHMS. To address this problem, this paper proposes a data reconstruction strategy using Kalman filtering and least absolute residual (KF-LAR) for the reconstruction of time series fault data. Kalman filtering is adopted to preprocess the time series data to eliminate noise and uncertainty in the data. Then, time series from sensors that are highly correlated with the faulty sensor are accurately identified through Pearson correlation coefficient analysis. Finally, a LAR reconstruction method is proposed to optimize the data reconstruction process to ensure the accuracy and robustness of the reconstruction result. This study proposes a novel data reconstruction solution to improve the reliability and efficiency of SHMS. It can also be widely adopted in IoT applications that facing similar data reconstruction challenges, including drones and aerial network systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Graphs have more expressive power and are widely researched in various search demand scenarios, compared with traditional relational and XML models. Today, many graph search services have been deployed on a third-party server, which can alleviate users from the burdens of maintaining large-scale graphs and huge computation costs. Nevertheless, outsourcing graph search services to the third-party server may invade users' privacy. PeGraph was recently proposed to achieve the encrypted search over the social graph. The main idea of PeGraph is to maintain two data structures XSet and TSet motivated by the OXT technology to support encrypted conductive search. However, PeGraph still has some limitations. First, PeGraph suffers from high communication and computation costs in search operations. Second, PeGraph cannot support encrypted search over dynamic graphs. In this paper, we propose an SGX-based efficient and confidentiality-preserving graph search scheme SecGraph that can support insertion and deletion operations. We first design a new proxy-token generation method to reduce the communication cost. Then, we design an LDCF-encoded XSet based on the Logarithmic Dynamic Cuckoo Filter to reduce the computation cost. Finally, we design a new dynamic version of TSet named Twin-TSet to enable encrypted search over dynamic graphs. We have demonstrated the confidentiality preservation property of SecGraph through rigorous security analysis. Experiment results show that SecGraph yields up to 208x improvement in search time compared with PeGraph and the communication cost in PeGraph is up to 540x larger than that in SecGraph.

Gait analysis is used in a wide range of fields, including clinical applications such as diagnosis and rehabilitation, investigation of gender and racial differences, and personal identification, which is important in forensic investigations and security. In recent years, gait data can be obtained from force plates, 3D motion capture, RGB cameras, and so on. In this study, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) to gait data captured with an RGB camera and analyzed the main data characteristics. However, the data used here is joint information whose posture is estimated using neural networks (NN) from gait videos taken with the camera. Furthermore, we created a NN model for personal identification using data whose dimensionality was reduced using PCA and attempted the identification. © 2024 IEEE.

Emotional Support Conversation (ESConv) aims to alleviate seekers' emotional distress by employing supportive strategies and responses. However, current approaches for strategy selection primarily rely on dialogue history, overlooking the importance of reflection on the chosen strategy. Additionally, these approaches simply lower the priority of an erroneously selected strategy, lacking the dynamic adjustment of strategy priorities based on the subsequent dialogue context. In this work, we propose a novel model called the Metacognition Control Network (MetaESC). Drawing inspiration from Metacognition theory, MetaESC enables reflective thinking on dialogue scenarios and strategy choices, facilitating improved strategy planning and supportive responses. Concretely, as emotional fluctuations play a crucial role in determining supporters' choice of support strategies, we integrate the emotional fluctuations of seekers with a Large Language Model, enabling comprehensive strategy reflection. Moreover, by considering the conversational context, we utilize a multi-head attention mechanism to update the user's state and dynamically adjust the priority of the selected strategy during the ongoing interaction. Extensive experimentation and empirical studies validate the effectiveness of MetaESC in generating emotion-supportive conversations, outperforming baseline models.

This work presents a novel printed and flexible sensor for detecting nitrite (NO2-) using a hybrid nanocomposite composed of carbon black (CB), polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and 4-aminophenol (AP). We prepared the NO2- sensor using a combination of simple mixed materials, and a moderate drying temperature of 40°. The sensor has two linear response ranges to NO2- from 25 μM to 1 mM and from 1 to 50 mM, with a detection limit of 25 μM at room temperature. Our results show that the sensor displays appropriate selectivity towards 50 μM of NO2- in the presence of potentially interfering anions and organic compounds that may be present in human urine. We propose that the sensing mechanism is based on the physical electrostatic interaction of NO2- molecules with AP's positively charged amine groups. This interaction results in a reduction of the electrical resistance when the sensor is exposed to NO2- anions. Our work highlights the potential of this printed sensor as a reliable and accurate tool for NO2- detection in medical applications. © 2023 IEEE.
