Passive-Infrared (PIR) sensors have traditionally been used as motion detectors, but their effectiveness is restricted by a small area of coverage and an inability to discern between the presence and absence of living beings. As a result, they frequently require user-adjusted cut-off timers for simple automation jobs. While there are other ways to detect human presence, they are either more expensive to deploy or more invasive. But this picture has completely changed with the introduction of contemporary mmWave Smart sensors that use Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology. These advanced sensors offer precise differentiation between the presence and absence of living beings, ushering in a myriad of new applications. Notably, they remain unaffected by varying lighting conditions, inclement weather, or dust, ensuring consistent performance across diverse environments. Moreover, certain models of these smart sensors boast capabilities for non-contact and non-intrusive monitoring of human vital parameters, further expanding their utility. These smart sensors' digital tunability, which makes it simple for IoT developers to adjust complex parameters, is one of their main advantages. This increases their adaptability and simplifies their integration with other apps and systems. In terms of environmental sensing and human presence detection, mmWave Smart sensors mark a substantial advancement because to their increased performance, dependability, and versatility. Their widespread use is expected to spur innovation in a variety of sectors, including healthcare and home automation, and will usher increased comfort, safety, security and efficiency.

Surface acoustic wave sensors are becoming more and more essential in research. The research has advanced in such a way that SAW sensors are now used in many different fields. The application areas of SAW sensor include gas sensing, biosensor, measurement of many physical parameters like humidity, pressure, temperature and torque. In this study, the SAW sensor is presented as a nitrogen gas sensor. Nanomaterials are introduced to a conventional SAW sensor to strengthen the sensor's performance. The most frequently used nano - materials for applications in gas detection is ZnO. Comsol Multiphysics is used to design a 2D SAW-based gas sensor using ZnO as the sensing material. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used in sensor characterization. Testing is done to determine whether nitrogen gas is present or not in the sensor. The sensor's sensitivity varies depending on whether there is gas present or not while operating at the same frequency. The sensor's frequency range is 3 MHz. Nitrogen gas is present in concentrations varying from 10 ppm to hundreds of ppm. With a rise in concentration, the sensor showed excellent linearity. © 2024, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

We report on a Tm-doped self-sweeping fiber laser operating at 2 mu m spectral range with a stabilized pulse repetition rate. Lasers with self-induced wavelength sweeping are bright alternative to narrow-band tunable laser sources. One disadvantage of self-sweeping lasers is fluctuations in the pulse repetition rate. In this paper for the purpose of optimization of intensity dynamics, the technique for pulse train shaping with acousto-optical modulator synchronized with laser pulses is proposed and demonstrated. Synchronization of the AOM frequency with the laser pulses allowed us to improve pulse train stability and reduce relative stability error down to 1%. The developed self-sweeping laser brings up new possibilities for remote gas analysis and LIDAR applications.

This paper presents a novel approach for spectral illuminant correction in smartphone imaging systems, aiming to improve color accuracy and enhance image quality. The methods introduced include Spectral Super Resolution and Weighted Spectral Color Correction (W-SCC). These techniques leverage the spectral information of both the image and the illuminant to perform effective color correction. Experimental evaluations were conducted using a dataset of 100 synthetic images, whose acquisition is simulated using the transmittance information of a Huawei P50 smartphone camera sensor and an Ambient light Multispectral sensor (AMS). The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods compared to traditional trichromatic pipelines, achieving significant reductions in colorimetric errors measured in terms of ∆E94 units. The W-SCC technique, in particular, incorporates per-wavelength weight optimization, further enhancing the accuracy of spectral illuminant correction. The presented approaches have valuable applications in various fields, including color analysis, computer vision, and image processing. Future research directions may involve exploring additional optimization techniques and incorporating advanced machine learning algorithms to further advance spectral illuminant correction in smartphone imaging systems. © 2023 Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

The integration of brain-computer interface (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies has fostered innovative applications in medical rehabilitation, education, and entertainment. One prominent application is the motor imagery (MI)-based BCI-VR system, which allows users to control the system through imagined movements without physical motion. Despite these advancements, the usability of a such system remains a significant challenge, primarily due to limited user feedback mechanisms. This study addresses this gap by designing and evaluating four haptic feedback modes to enhance user interaction in MI-based BCI-VR systems. Specifically, the research introduces a novel approach by integrating pseudo-haptic feedback - the illusion of touch created through visual and auditory stimuli - alongside traditional physical feedback. Using a within-subjects experimental design, the study assesses the impact of different combinations of physical and pseudo-haptic feedback on haptic perception, user workload, and satisfaction. The results indicate that the combination of both pseudo-haptic and physical feedback significantly enhances user satisfaction (M=2.25, SD=0.46) and perceived vibration level (M=9.25, SD=1.03), although it also increases the workload. These findings suggest that carefully balanced haptic feedback can improve the usability and overall user experience of MI-based BCI-VR systems, providing practical insights for system optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

Attitude solving plays a crucial role in various fields, as it enables accurate determination of an object's orientation and helps optimize system performance. By providing precise attitude information, the MPU9250 nine-axis sensor contributes to the design of balance bikes, aerial mice, and other applications. The project utilizes the STM32F767 microcontroller to interface with the MPU9250 sensor, enabling the acquisition of raw data. The Digital Motion Processor (DMP) and Motion Process Library (MPL) library are employed to perform attitude solving, allowing for real-time estimation of the object's Euler angles. The results from the proposed method demonstrate accuracy, providing a reliable and cost-effective solution for precise attitude resolution. This research enhances operational efficiency, optimizes system performance, and reduces computational complexity. Future efforts will focus on mitigating errors arising from environmental factors. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, a plasmon sensor based on a core mismatch optical fiber structure is proposed for measuring various creatinine concentrations. Creatinine is an important clinical biomarker for diabetes, kidney disease, renal failure, and muscle atrophy. The single-mode fiber (SMF) and multi-mode fiber (MMF) are used to fabricate the SMF-MMF-SMF-MMF-SMF (SMSMS) structure. Further, SMSMS fiber structure is etched with hydrofluoric (HF) acid, that results in more evanescent fields at the core-cladding interface. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are immobilized on the surface of the optical fiber structure to activate the LSPR phenomenon. To validate the sensor's performance, the sensor's sensitivity, reusability, reproducibility, and selectivity are tested. The experimental results demonstrate that the fiber-optic sensor based on the SMSMS structure is capable of measuring creatinine concentrations over a wide range in aquaculture industry. This provides an excellent opportunity for the sensor to be used in biomedicine.
