Vision-based tasks of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) attracted significant research attention. Nowadays, testing a complex vision-based system using real experiments is expensive and time-consuming. This paper focuses on designing and implementing an integrated virtual simulation and test system for vision-based algorithm verification in visual perception, communication transmission, and closed-loop control of UAVs. First, a unified modular modeling process is proposed to construct the test system, which consists of a virtual environment subsystem, a vision algorithm subsystem, and a corresponding control subsystem. Although the vision algorithm and control subsystems are the same real experiments and virtual simulation, the virtual environment subsystem focuses on ensuring simulation credibility as the only difference between real and virtual experimentation. Then, some essential components are verified, including the camera model, image process, and communication of the visual sensor network. Finally, two case studies are performed to validate the efficiency and easy deployment, illustrating it as a promising platform for verifying and validating advanced guidance, navigation, and control algorithms.

In this paper, we present a low-noise, high-gain readout hardware to be used in conjunction with (sub)mm-wave zero bias detectors, to enable high sensitivity (i.e., similar to -50 dBm) and fast (i.e., below a second at -50 dBm) power detection. The developed hardware employs a cascade of two (COTS) programmable gain amplifier (PGA), capable of reaching up to 90 dB gain (volt to volt), each providing an input referred noise level of 16 nV/root Hz. The signal is then digitized on the same board via a 500 kHz 12bit ADC, providing an SNR of 74 dB. The digitized signal is then readout via an ST microcontroller and transferred to the operator PC via a USB interface. The sensitive bias voltages for the PGAs are provided via the microcontroller, or alternatively can be fed by an external lab grade supply to further improve on the (already high) supply noise rejection from the first stage PGA. The proposed hardware is designed to interface with VDI zero bias detectors, high responsivity and low NEP diodes (around 2000 V/W and below 12 pW/root Hz, respectively) operating in monomodal waveguide bands up to 500 GHz. In this contribution we demonstrate the usage of the developed hardware with WR10, WR6.5, WR5 and WR 3 ZBD diodes.

This research uncovers a pioneering method for distinguishing mosaic augmentation in datasets, an area yet to be thoroughly investigated. Utilizing conventional visual preprocessing tactics, such as Gaussian blurring and Canny Edge Detection, together with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), we develop a strategy for detecting mosaic enhancements in datasets. This methodology achieved an remarkable accuracy rate. A custom-created dataset was used to verify our proposed model, which exhibited outstanding precision in classification tasks, therefore showcasing its capacity to assess whether a dataset has been subjected to mosaic augmentation. Our technique offers substantial enhancements to dataset validation procedures, enhancing the accuracy and trustworthiness of ensuing data-centric models or systems. The paper elucidates our methodological underpinnings, detailing the experimentation setup, and presents robust results validating our approach’s efficacy. Specifically, it achieved an impressive precision of 94.84%, recall rate of 0.96, and an AUC of 0.98 on a proprietary dataset. These findings pledge potential for future applications in governing image data quality, persistently guaranteeing the genuineness and reliability of data across various AI and Machine Learning pursuits. © 2024 IEEE.

Flexible capacitance pressure sensors have shown excellent application potential in biomedical equipment, human-computer interaction, and robotics. Herein, we propose a flexible capacitive pressure sensor based on bionic hybrid microstructures (BHM) which consists of micro-cones by facile replication of the surface of Calathea zebrina leaf and mini-domes by vacuum adsorption from through-hole arrays, respectively. The sensor presents a high pressure sensitivity of 3.17 kPa-1, and wide detection range. These promising advantages of the pressure sensor enable continuous pulse signal monitoring and heart condition analyzing of human body. This work highlights the potential of the pressure sensor in a wide range of applications, including wearable devices, robots, and human-machine interaction. © 2022 IEEE.

Gold nanorods (AuNRs), 1D rod-shaped nanomaterials, hold a crucial role in sensing applications due to their distinct physicochemical properties, such as high surface area, efficient mass transfer, good biocompatibility, and anisotropic optical and electronic responses. This review outlines the most recent advancements in AuNRs research, offering a comprehensive summary of synthetic strategies. Subsequently, the potential of AuNRs in sensor applications is discussed, and for the first time, an innovative analysis of their application in the sensor field based on the aspect ratio of AuNRs is proposed. These sensing systems are utilized for detecting heavy metal ions, inorganic anions, small biomolecules, protein tumor markers, enzymes, and nucleic acids. Finally, the future research directions and challenges of AuNRs are addressed. Gold nanorods have become increasingly significant due to their unique anisotropic shapes and adjustable plasmonic characteristics. This paper offers an extensive overview of the latest progress in AuNRs research, covering synthesis methods and the creation of sensors utilizing AuNRs of various aspect ratios. Transmitted and reflected power is typically measured between the output of a power amplifier and the input of an antenna of a transmitter. Directional couplers in conjunction with power detectors are commonly used for this purpose, where the coupled port of the coupler is used to measure the transmitted power from the amplifier and the isolated port is used to measure the reflected power from the antenna. Classical directional couplers, such as quarter-wavelength coupled-line couplers, can become physically large components in a system, depending on the frequency of operation. A directional coupler also adds additional cost, power loss and generates excess heat. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, we aim to present a sophisticated solution to real industrial applications using a multi-agent system. More specifically, we aim to develop a fast and secure distributed coverage control algorithm to enable a multi-agent system to cooperatively inspect and reconstruct infrastructure. The coverage control for mobile sensor networks puts forward a requirement of improving efficiency and guaranteed safety in unknown and obstacle-rich environments. Our algorithm focuses on exploring partially known environments with limited sensing capabilities, while simultaneously avoiding collisions with obstacles and other agents. To collect necessary data, a density map is reactively updated to measure the distribution of viewpoints. Based on this map, each agent will be dynamically driven to the location of interest. A collision-free region is then constructed in real-time for each agent to guarantee safety during the coverage process. Finally, a spatial load-balanced deployment is generated to provide locally optimal sensor coverage of target infrastructure. The overall system with a team of 3 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been successfully adopted to physically inspect a large-scale industrial building in Shatin, Hong Kong. The result proves that our proposed method not only guarantees flight safety but also efficiently completes overall tasks in cluttered environments. It greatly reduces the required operating time and thus minimizes potential hazards in using unmanned aerial systems for inspection. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Polymer film capacitors are extensively utilized in solar grid-connected power systems, new energy vehicles, and aircraft. However, due to the low storage energy density of commercial polymer dielectrics, it is difficult for commercial film capacitors to be miniaturized. We introduced a soluble semi-crystalline gradient ethylene-styrene copolymer (PESt) system with controllable microphase interfaces. The distance of each microphase interface is controlled within 3-7 nm, thus generating abundant microphase interfaces with large-scale modulated dielectric performances. Compared with typical energy storage dielectric polymers, the ethylene-styrene gradient copolymer with a styrene content of 44% (PESt44) exhibits significantly enhanced energy storage density of 7.26 J/cm3 at 700 MV/m, with charge-discharge efficiency > 95% at 20°C, versus 2 J/cm3 of Biaxially-oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) at similar film thickness of 10μm. Here, in this work, to further increase storage energy density, the composites of PESt44 and alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles are prepared by solution-mixing. When the mass fraction of Al2O3 reaches 1wt%, the composite exhibits a high discharged energy density of about 8.43 J/cm3 at the applied fields up to 800 MV/m, as well as high charge-discharge efficiency (90.63%). In addition, the composite owns a low dielectric loss (10-410-3@20°C), which guarantees long-term stable operation of the film capacitors. However, PESt44 doped with 5wt% Al2O3 only exhibits 3.30 J/cm3 at the applied fields up to 500 MV/m, owning to overlapping interface regions and reducing dispersion. Thus, nano-doping strategy is only helpful with low nanoparticles content in the PESt44. This work contributes to the development of polymeric composite for film capacitors towards high energy density, which is essential for their industrialization in high-power electrical systems. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, a hierarchical multi-sensor fusion approach is presented for localization in unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) applications where global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals are not available. The proposed method incorporates Odometer, Gear, and Steering wheel angle (OGS) information from the UGV. At the top layer, an optimum data fusion approach based on the linear minimum variance principle and using an adaptive weighting coefficient matrix is presented for fusing each local state estimation, and at the bottom layer, adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF) operates as a local filter, integrating IMU and OGS data with camera to generate the global optimal estimate. The proposed methodology avoids applying upper constraints on the covariance for estimate to remove the connection between local states. Electrical motors' effectiveness, optimization, and dependability have led to significant developments in the industrial revolution. Rotor commutation is essential for smooth operation and is done by energizing the proper rotor. The study introduces an innovative methodology for fault-tolerant control of Hall-Effect sensors governing brushless direct current (BLDC) motors. The implemented result validates the substantial saving of energy. The implementation here is unique and effective because the BLDC motor will be operated even if there is a fault in the Hall-Effect sensor. It will run smoothly and efficiently unless the two sensor failures are detected. This method addresses situations where the signal from a Hall Effect sensor stays consistently low or high for short periods. This developed system is mature enough to handle the subsystem when the data from the sensor detects faults, identifies faulty signals, and creates a replacement signal. The proposed research work uses MATLAB Simulink and the TI-DSP (TMS320F2812) KIT to show the high-speed simulation. The simulation results were validated through different motor speeds from 3500 to 2000 rpm. Drawbacks like cost and reliability have been overcome in the implemented research work. In the implemented research work, the simulation outcome shows approximately 10% better results in generating more torque than the existing methods using sinusoidal windings. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
