Intelligent bionic legs (IBL) controlled by magneto-rheological (MR) damper is an advanced prosthesis. The conception, research purpose and configuration of intelligent bionic leg were introduced. Gait description of human normal gait is detailed using analysis method of finite state machine (FMS). By information gained from six-axis force sensor, the gait perception method of typical gait events and gait states is discussed. The detection of real zero moment point (ZMP) was analyzed and on-line gait adjustment was discussed. In the last, control experiment of gait tracking done.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have advanced rapidly in the last several years, and can now provide many useful command and control features to a wide variety of users--if an expert is available to find, assemble, setup, configure, and maintain the BCI. Developing BCI systems that are practical for nonexperts remains a major challenge, and is the principal focus of the EU BRAIN project and other work. This paper describes five challenges in BCI interface development, and how they might be addressed with it hypothetical easy BCI system called EZBCI. EZBCI requires a new interface that is natural, intuitive, and easy to configure without expert help. Finally, two true scenarios with severely disabled users highlight the impact that EZBCI would have on users' lives.

Practical applications of Ambient Intelligence cannot leave aside requirements about ubiquity4 scalability, and trasparency to the user. An enabling technology to comply with this goal is represented by Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs);however, although capable of limited innetwork processing, they lack the computational power to act as a comprehensive intelligent system. By taking inspiration from the sensory processing model of complex biological organisms, we propose here a cognitive architecture able to perceive, decide upon, and control the environment of which the system is part. WSNs act as a transparent interface that allows the system to understand human requirements through implicit feedback, and consequently adapt its behavior. A central unit will carry on symbolic reasoning based on the concepts extracted from sensory inputs collected and pre-processed by pervasively deployed WSNs. © 2009 IEEE.

Telecom Italia (TI), being one of the top Italian electricity consumers, realized and started to deploy a real-time energy management system (Kaleidos) based on wireless sensor network technology (WSN), to monitor all relevant energy parameters of its switching plants (e.g. per-line energy consumption, room temperatures, humidity and lighting) and to remotely control room temperatures and air conditioning. Among the features of this system we outline: ▸ average cost of each measurement point lower than 100 E (excluding the service platform);▸ negligible installation and maintenance costs;▸ long life (>2 years, better 3) sensor node battery;▸ reliability, scalability and security;▸ self-configuring WSN. The architecture of the system consists of 4 layers: ▸ a low cost set of sensor nodes deployed in each switching plant. Each node includes one or more sensors interfaced with a radio communication chip, compliant to Zigbee Standard;▸ a Gateway for each WSN, which acts as a data sink for the sensor nodes and which connects the WSN to the server platform through an internet connection (LAN or GSM-GPRS);▸ a service platform (WSN-C), able to manage and control different kinds of sensor Networks (energy management, health care, automotive,...), to collect and store data and to make them available to applications via a Web Service;▸ a web application which provides a Graphical User interface (GUI) and data analysis facilities. The first trial started in April 2007 and demonstrated that an energy saving in the order of 10-15 % was possible by simply optimizing the air conditioning system working parameters. In 2008 TI decided to deploy Kaleidos into its 300 larger plants. Typical site consists of 10-15 rooms, 200076000 m2, 1/5 GWh/year energy consumption and it is equipped with a sensor network of 20/30 current nodes and 20/25 environmental nodes. Kaleidos is used not only to monitor and control the energy and thermal behaviour of sites, but it has been shown to be effective

Planar Microtoroid cavities with ultrahigh quality factor have very strong confined function to the electromagnetic wave coupled into them due to their novel ring-like structures. Therefore, they have very good applications in high sensitivity sensors and other micro optics components. In this paper, the Planar Microtoroid cavity and its coupling system constructed together with the tapered fiber are introduced. Then, micro sensors based on the above coupling system are designed. These sensors measure environmental parameters by means of monitoring the changes in the transmission spectrum of the high finesse Planar Microtoroid cavities, obtaining fine resolution and high accuracy due to their ultrahigh quality factor (Q) performance. The sensitive mechanism and the feasibility are demonstrated through optical and mechanical software simulation. With software BeamPROP, the evident resonance and strengthened phenomenon to the electromagnetic wave coupled into the micro-cavity are shown, which have a big relation with the light frequency. The results indicate that, Planar Microtoroid cavity is very promising in designing new micro sensors.

The joystick is the operation interface of electric wheelchair. The user needs to operate it in accordance with machine's operational procedure specifications. Therefore the joystick is convenience operation system for the system side rather than the user side We focus on the body motions which humans have, and try to realize a new type of interface which replaces conventional joystick. There is a body motion which comes from instinctive adjustment functions to control changes of body shape caused by voluntary actions. We use this kind of motion as an interface and call it HBMI(Human Body Motion Inerface). In this paper, we set a prototype based on the experiment for deriving a suitable measurement to detect human body motion. The evaluation of HBMI by using SD method is also presented. © 2009 SICE.

The realization of map functions is usually paid much more attention to than the visualization quality of map in the development of electronic map. As a result, the visualization effect of electronic map is unsatisfactory. The visualization quality of electronic map is directly related to user's understanding of geographical information and influences the application of electronic map. Along with extensive expansion and application of electronic map, visualization effect of electronic map has already become an important aspect to evaluate electronic map products. To examine the evaluation and the control techniques of electronic map visualization quality and to establish evaluation standards of electronic map visualization quality are of great significance at present. Based on the experiences in electronic map design, development of electronic map platform and professional application, the authors summarize several factors affecting visualization quality of electronic map: user interface, display capacity, visual effect, display speed, dynamic labeling, real-time display, legend and symbol design, and other aspects including temporal effect, mark effect, dynamic generalization, and dynamic projection. Combining with the practice in developing an electronic atlas system called eMapSee, the authors analyze related control techniques of visualization quality of electronic map from these aspects: friendly user interface, legibility and beauty of display effect, fast map display, real-time map display, and introduce how these techniques are used in practice.

In the process of space robot capturing, the space robot end-effector was in open-loop state, and the robot controller could not estimate if the capture interface was in desired position. Hence a force sense unit adapted to vicious outer space environment used as the capturing force feedback to the control system was designed. By the method of mechatronics integration design, the force sense unit was integrated into the robot end-effector, which enhanced the reliability, reduced the installing and debugging difficulty. The structure of sensor's elastomer was modeled, and then it was analyzed by the FEA software Patran/Nastran. At last, inherence frequency of the sensor was figured out from mode analyzing, and a number of object capture tests were carried out. Experimental results showed that degree of non-linearity (1.7%), delicacy (0.0025 V/N) and stability of the sensor unit was significantly accorded with the design targets of space robot end-effector.

The development of a fibre optic oxygen sensor system based on an unsymmetrical fibre coupler for the measurement of oxygen partial pressure (PO2) is reported. The principle of the oxygen sensor is based on the luminescence quenching of a luminophore by oxygen and the sensor consists of an unsymmetrical silica fibre coupler and a PMMA sensing medium that contains immobilized Pt (II) complexes. The 2×2 unsymmetrical optical fibres coupler was made using two silica fibres with different core diameters, one is with 200μm core diameter and another one is with 105μm core diameter. In our current work, the fibre coupler fibre was optimized to improve the performance of the sensor system by increasing light coupling efficiency from LED to sensor probe. The performance of the fibre optic oxygen sensors was evaluated using Ocean Optics spectrometer (USB2000) based on the luminescence intensity measurement. The details of the sensor chemistry, experimental system and the results were presented. As result, a special fibre coupler has been used to construct a practical, low cost oxygen sensor. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper provides an in-depth study of Wireless sensor Network (WSN) application to monitor and control the swift habitat. A set of system is designed and developed which includes the node's hardware, GUI software, sensor network, and interconnectivity for remote data access and management. system architecture is proposed to address the requirements for habitat monitoring. The application driven designed, provides and identifies important areas of work in data sampling, communications and networking. In this monitoring system, a sensor node (MTS400), IRIS and Micaz radio transceivers, and a USB interfaced gateway base station of Crossbow (Xbow) Technology WSN are employed. The Graphical User interface (GUI) is written using a Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) along with Xbow Technology drivers provided by National Instrument. This monitoring system is capable of collecting data and presents it in both tables and waveform charts for further analysis. This system is also able to send notification messages by e-mail, whenever changes on the swift habitat at remote sites (swift farms) occur, via the Internet connectivity. Other functions that have been implemented in this system are the database system for record and management purposes;remote access through the internet using LogMeIn software. Finally, this research draws a conclusion that a wireless sensor network for monitoring swift habitat can be effectively used to monitor and manage swift farming industry in Sarawak. ©2009 IEEE.
