The advanced railway signal system can prevent train-to-train collision automatically under normal working conditions, but the lack of perception of obstacles in front of the train has always been the pain point of the existing signal system. In this research, a design of Railway Intelligent Obstacle Detection system (RIODS) is proposed for the detection and warning of obstacles on the track, such as pedestrians, rocks, and vehicles. RIODS is a comprehensive and effective system solution. By deploying the subsystem of RIODS in the vehicle, trackside, and control center to meet the engineering application needs in different operation scenarios, the availability of the system is greatly improved, and the dependence on the performance of a single sensor is reduced. Based on multi-sensor fusion technology, deep learning algorithms, train positioning technology, and wireless communication, the system achieves information collection and analysis, and obstacle detection. Through field testing, the expected design function has been achieved. RIODS can be applied to different environments, and effectively improves the safety of train operation.

Accommodating the needs for having integrated and holistic approaches to address the challenges of governing and planning smart cities is explored in this paper. The problem of developing a smart and sustainable solution for intelligent transportation systems is addressed. Nowadays, autonomous vehicle technologies attract great interest, where advanced driving assistance systems (ADASs) target the safety and comfort of drivers, while ensuring fuel efficiency as well. This paper explores some ADASs features that are based on actual driving conditions to design adaptive Cruise control (ACC) with sensor fusion that is based on Model Predictive control (MPC). In order to get the appropriate velocity output response and to achieve a smooth acceleration response, the characteristics of this controller will be correctly tuned. Both lane keeping assist (LKA) and Lane Detection (LD) are the main features to be investigated, using different driving scenarios. The control methodology is based on introducing a hybrid lateral and longitudinal control system to guarantee having a better tracking response, safe driving, and lower fuel consumption, which is highly needed for sustainable smart cities. A closed-loop Simulink model will be used to test and validate the proposed system. The obtained results indicate that the system is indeed cost-effective and is a promising sustainable solution for smart transportation systems.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with active phased array antenna is a system having distributed controllers for control and synchronization of individual RF elements. In current generation SAR payloads of ISRO, three level of distributed control hierarchy is adopted. Transmit/Receive controllers (TRC), as a separate subsystem comes at the third level of hierarchy. TRC loads attenuation and phase digital data to each RF element (T/R module) for electronic beam steering. Phased array radar systems consist of hundreds of such subsystems. In new space arena, requirement of low weight and miniaturized volume SAR payload necessitates the reduction of subsystems and interconnect lines. An innovative approach is adopted through partitioning the task in such a way that TRC as a subsystem shrinks into a single IC solution named as Serialized control interface (SCI) ASIC. SCI ASIC can be housed inside TR Module as a component thus omitting the need of TRC as a separate subsystem. Traditionally, telecommand, telemetry and radar timing signals are communicated through separate differential inter-connect lines between central controller and distributed controllers. Bulky interconnect lines increase complexity, size and weight of payload. With new approach of SCI ASIC, harness complexity is significantly reduced due to signal generation inside SCI through pattern generator concept. We present architecture, design and implementation methodology for SCI ASIC which controls TR Modules to meet all the functional requirements of advanced imaging RADAR.

Interplay between magnetism and photoelectric properties introduces the effective control of photoresponse in optoelectronic devices via magnetic field, termed as magneto-photoresponse. It enriches the application scenarios and shows potential to construct in-sensor vision systems for artificial intelligence with gate-free architecture. However, achieving a simultaneous existence of room-temperature magnetism and notable photoelectric properties in semiconductors is a great challenge. Here, the room-temperature magneto-photoresponse is accomplished in all-2D optoelectronic devices, employing 2D ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 as the source and drain, with WSe2 forming the channel. The interplay between room-temperature magnetism and photoelectric properties is realized by introducing the unique magneto-band structure effect from 2D interface, resulting in magneto-tunable charge transfer between Fe3GaTe2 and WSe2. The photocurrent in this 2D optoelectronic device exhibits robust response to both the direction and amplitude of external magnetic fields. Utilizing constructed 2D optoelectronic devices with magneto-photoresponse, traditional gate-controlled phototransistors are replaced and a prototype in-sensor vision system with visual adaptation, significantly improving the recognition accuracy to over four times in low-contrast environments is established. These findings pave a way for achieving high-temperature magneto-photoresponse, thereby guiding the construction of robust in-sensor vision systems toward high performance and broad applications. In 2D optoelectronic devices with the electrodes of 2D ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 and channel of WSe2, the photoresponse is effectively controlled by magnetic fields at room temperature. This room-temperature magneto-photoresponse, achieved by the 2D magneto-band structure, lays the groundwork for multidimensional responsive optoelectronic devices. Traditional methods of monitoring vital signs in vehicles often fall short when it comes to response time, especially in fast-moving situations. To tackle this, our paper introduces a groundbreaking solution: leveraging millimeter-wave radar technology to monitor vital signs in real time within the vehicle, providing timely alerts when necessary. This approach not only enhances the accuracy of readings but also ensures a swift response that is crucial during vehicle operation. By tapping into the unique abilities of millimeter-wave radar to detect subtle human signs, we propose a novel method that processes radar signals to monitor vital signs like heart rate and respiratory rate. This technique is highly effective in meeting the stringent demands of real-time accuracy and speed, especially while driving. Our system includes three main components: radar sensors, a signal processing unit, and an early-warning control module, working together seamlessly to ensure optimal monitoring. The radar sensor continuously transmits and receives millimeter-wave signals, allowing it to track vital signs without interruption. A specially designed feature extraction algorithm filters out noise and extracts critical information, including heart and respiratory rates. Then, advanced algorithms analyze this data in real time, spotting any abnormalities and triggering alerts through the control module. What sets this system apart is its rigorous testing under various vehicle speeds and environmental conditions, confirming its stability, reliability, and fast response times. In real-world applications, the system responds to a high heart rate in 3.7 to 4.0 seconds and to a rapid breathing rate in 4.1 to 4.3 seconds. This millimeter-wave radar-based system offers a fresh approach to vehicle safety, combining practicality with promising future potential.

Innovative human-machine interfaces (HMIs) have attracted increasing attention in the field of system control and assistive devices for disabled people. Conventional HMIs that are designed based on the interaction of physical movements or language communication are not effective or appliable to severely disabled users. Here, a breath-driven triboelectric sensor is reported consisting of a soft fixator and two circular-shaped triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for self-powered respiratory monitoring and smart system control. The sensor device is capable of effectively detecting the breath variation and generates responsive electrical signals based on different breath patterns without affecting the normal respiration. A breathing-driven HMI system is demonstrated for severely disabled people to control electrical household appliances and shows an intelligent respiration monitoring system for emergence alarm. The new system provides the advantages of high sensitivity, good stability, low cost, and ease of use. This work will not only expand the development of the TENGs in self-powered sensors, but also opens a new avenue to develop assistive devices for disabled people through innovation of advanced HMIs.

This research work focuses on developing a helioagribot to enhance agricultural efficiency and sustainability. The proposed system uses solar energy and a microcontroller-based control unit to autonomously manage components like motors and sensors. Solar panels generate energy stored in a battery for continuous operation, even in low light. A DC to DC converter ensures optimal voltage levels. The Atmega 328P microcontroller acts as the CPU, utilizing ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection and distance measurement. It controls DC motors through motor drivers and relays, enabling precise movement and mechanical operations. This versatile system can perform tasks such as crop monitoring, irrigation, and pest control, promoting sustainable agriculture through renewable energy and autonomous functionality. Challenges include ensuring continuous operation during low sunlight or bad weather by managing energy efficiently and maintaining battery longevity. system integration must ensure component compatibility and reliable software for overall performance. Durability and easy maintenance are vital, given the harsh agricultural environment. Addressing these challenges will enable the helioagribot to significantly contribute to sustainable agriculture through renewable energy and advanced automation.

Increased flight time and advanced sensors are making Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) easier to use, facilitating their widespread adoption in fields such as precision agriculture or environmental monitoring. However, current applications are limited mainly to passive visual observation from far above; to enable the next generation of aerial robot applications, MAV s must begin to directly physically interact with objects in the environment, such as placing and collecting sensors. Enabling these applications for a wide spectrum of end-users is only possible if the mechanism is safe and easy to use, without overburdening the user with complex integration, complicated control, or overwhelming and convoluted feedback. To this end we propose a self-sufficient passive payload system to enable both the deployment and retrieval of sensors for agriculture. This mechanism can be simply mechanically attached to a commercial, off-the-shelf MAV, without requiring further electrical or software integration. The user-centric design and mechanical intelligence of the system facilitates ease of use through simplified control with targeted perceptual feedback. The usability of the system is validated quantitatively and qualitatively in a user study demonstrating sensor deployment and collection. All participants were able to deploy and collect at least four sensors both within 10 minutes in visual line-of-sight and within 12 minutes in beyond visualline-of-sight, after only three minutes of practice. Enabling MAVs to physically interact with their environment will usher in the next stage of MAV utility and applications. Complex tasks, such as sensor deployment and retrieval, can be realized relatively simply, by relying on a mechanically passive system designed with the user in mind, these payloads can enable such applications to be more widely available and inclusive to end-users.

Electromyography (EMG) sensors have been widely used for assessing muscle activation state and human-robot interaction (HRI). However, available commercial EMG sensors are expensive and inconvenient for real-time applications. The aim of this study is to design and validate a novel low-cost wireless EMG sensor. Specifically, the wireless EMG sensor is equipped with an analog-front-end (AFE), radio frequency (RF) module, and controller area network (CAN) bus, which achieves wireless data transmission and provides an interface for real-time HRI. The evaluation of the designed system was done by a series of exercises performed by volunteers. Raw signal., mean absolute value (MAV), zero crossings (ZC), slope sign changes (SSC), waveform length (WL), and median frequency (MDF) are used for comparing wireless EMG sensors and commercial sensors. In addition, Spearman's correlation (SC), and intra-class cross-correlation (ICC) are used as two validation indicators. The result shows that the SC and ICC between the raw signals of the two types of sensors are 0.6156 and 0.7780, respectively. The SC of MAV, ZC, SSC, WL, and MDF are 0.9708, 0.6740, 0.8023, 0.9663, and 0.9476, respectively. The ICC of MAV, ZC, SSC, WL, and MDF are 0.9670, 0.7340, 0.7910, 0.9540., and 0.8230, respectively. The results indicate a good agreement between the two systems and confirm the reliability of the wireless EMG sensor's design. The wireless EMG sensor can be further applied to real-time HRI and muscle fatigue assessment.

This paper focuses on the interoperability of smart devices (sensor and actuators) in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things. IEC 61499 and IEEE 1451 standards are employed to implement a distributed control and measurement system. It addresses how two standards can interoperate and communicate efficiently by complementing each other. Both standards share common properties which are the essential elements of any IoT system. The Message Queue Telemetry Protocols (MQTT) is utilized to provide an interoperable network interface between the IEEE 1451 family of standards and the IEC 61499 standard. An interoperability test platform is provided to show how both standards communicate efficiently for a simple read/ write automation process.
