A new approach for signal extrapolation based on wavelet representation known as scale-time limited extrapolation and a denoising process is investigated in this research. We first examine a new signal modeling technique using wavelets and the corresponding scale-time limited signal extrapolation algorithm. Then, the sensitivity of the algorithm to noise is discussed, and a denoising algorithm based on the time-localization property of the wavelet transform is proposed. By integrating the denoising process and the iterative scale-time limited extrapolation algorithm, we obtain a very robust signal extrapolation algorithm for noisy data. A simulation result of signal extrapolation from noisy observed data is presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed robust signal extrapolation algorithm.

This paper shows the design and the evaluation of on-line arithmetic modules for the most common operators used in DSP applications, using FPGAs as the target technology. The designs are highly optimized for the target technology and the common range of precision in DSP. The results are based on experimental data collected using CAD tools. All designs are synthesized for the same type of devices (xilinx xC4000) for comparison, avoiding rough estimates of the system performance, and generating a more reliable and detailed comparison of on-line signal processing solutions with other 'state of the art' approaches, such as distributed arithmetic. We show that on-line designs have a hard stand for basic DSP applications that use only addition and multiplication. However, we also show that on-line designs are able to overtake other approaches as the applications become more sophisticated, e.g. when data dependencies exist, or when non constant multiplicands restrict the use of other approaches.

The problem of kernel design for Cohen time-frequency distributions is formulated as a blind deconvolution problem. It is shown that the iterative blind deconvolution method (IBDM) used in image restoration problems can be successfully applied to solve the kernel design problem. We obtain the following results: (1) the rate of convergence depends on which domains the constraints are imposed (2) certain constraints are needed for algorithm convergence (3) the more constrained the kernel design is, the faster the rate of convergence (4) there are tradeoffs between constraints, e.g., compact support vs. satisfaction of marginals;(5) time-frequency distributions which are more amenable to visual interpretation can be obtained using this algorithm.

In array processing, one technique for cancelling interference in the presence of colored noise is the ULLV decomposition of a pair of matrices. The factorization is stable and accurate, and is easy to update when a row is added to either one of the two matrices. In earlier work, we made the assumptions that both matrices must have at least as many rows as columns and that the matrix representing interference must have full column rank. In this paper, we relax the latter restriction and allow the interference matrix to be rank deficient. We present an algorithm for computing the decomposition and two techniques for updating it. The details on updating are quite different from those in the full rank case. © 1996 SPIE. All rights reserved.

Orthogonal matrix transformations form an important part of matrix-based signal processing applications. Systolic arrays for computing these algorithms have been developed and the size of these arrays usually depends directly on the size of the problem. For large matrix sizes, implementing large numbers of processors in hardware is not physically feasible. In this paper, we examine two popular orthogonal transformations, Givens rotations and householder transformations (HT), from the viewpoint of realizing a fixed-size parallel processor array that can handle large data matrices. An efficient scheduling procedure is used to compute the HT on a systolic type array, its performance is compared with that of an array designed for computing the Givens method. An important conclusion resulting from the comparison is that the performance of the HT array is superior to that for the Givens method when the matrices are larger compared to the array size.

Detection and classification of cyclostationary signals in noise of unknown distribution is addressed and novel tests for cyclostationarity are proposed. Both cases of known and unknown signal statistics are considered. The proposed approaches exploit the asymptotic normality of sample cyclic- cumulant and polyspectrum estimators for deriving asymptotically optimal x² tests. Simpler, but generally suboptimal versions are also presented. Simulations are performed to test the proposed algorithms and illustrate their insensitivity to any stationary noise as well as the ability of higher-than second-order schemes to suppress cyclostationary Gaussian interferences of unknown covariance.

We consider the problem of recovering signals from noisy indirect observations under the additional a priori information that the signal is believed to be slowly varying except at all unknown number of points where it may have discontinuities of unknown size. The model problem is a linear deconvolution problem. To take advantage of the qualitative prior information available, we use a non-stationary Markov model with the variance of the innovation process also unknown, and apply Bayesian techniques to estimate both the signal and the prior variance. We propose a fast iterative method for computing a MAP estimates and we show that, with a rather standard choices of the hyperpriors, the algorithm produces the fixed point iterative solutions of the total variation and of the Perona-Malik regularization methods. We also demonstrate that, unlike the non-statistical estimation methods, the Bayesian approach leads to a very natural reliability assessment of edge detection by a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based analysis of the posterior.

In this paper, we consider the use of a seismic sensor array for the localization and tracking of a wideband moving source. The proposed solution consists of two steps: source Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation and localization via DOA estimates. Three DOA estimation methods are considered. The Covariance Matrix Analysis and the Surface Wave Analysis are previously published DOA estimation algorithms shown to be effective in the localization of a stationary wideband source. This paper investigates their performance on moving wideband sources. A novel DOA estimation algorithm, the Modified Kirlin's Method was also developed for the localization of a moving Source. The DOAs estimated by these algorithms are combined rising a least-squares optimization for source localization. The application of these algorithms to real-life data show the effectiveness of both the Surface Wave Analysis and the Modified Kirlin's Method in locating and tracking a wideband moving source.

We present a solution to a complex multi-tone transient detection problem to illustrate the integrated use of symbolic and numeric processing techniques which are supported by well-established underlying models. Examples of such models include synchronous dataflow for numeric processing and the blackboard paradigm for symbolic heuristic search. Our transient detection solution serves to emphasize the importance of developing system design methods and tools which can support the integrated use of well- established symbolic and numerical models of computation. Recently, we incorporated a blackboard-based model of computation underlying the Integrated processing and Understanding of signals (IPUS) paradigm into a system-level design environment for numeric processing called Ptolemy. Using the IPUS/Ptolemy environment, we are implementing our solution to the multi-tone transient detection problem.
