We generalize the concept of the autocorrelation function to arbitrary physical variables and show how it can be used to define a local autocorrelation function. Using the local autocorrelation function we develop a new method to generate densities for arbitrary physical quantities. In addition, we show that the generalized autocorrelation function can be used to characterize functions with respect to a physical property.

This paper presents, Index Mapping, a technique to efficiently map a widely used class of digital signal processing algorithms onto a space/time paradigm with immediate representation as the partitioning and scheduling map of a small, I/O efficient, hardware array. When applied to reconfigurable FPGA based hardware architectures with downstream Sea-of-Gates optimization methods, the resulting systems form a dynamic signal processing environment with the best mix of performance and flexibility for wireless applications. Herein, Index Mapping is demonstrated with a mapping of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) onto an FPGA computing machine, the ReConfigurable Processor (RCP).

This paper explores novel techniques involving number theoretic concepts to perform real-time digital signal processing for high bandwidth data stream applications in digital signal processing. Often the arithmetic manipulations are simple in form (cascades of additions and multiplications in a well defined structure) but the numbers of operations that have to be computed every second can be large. This paper discusses ways in which new number theoretic mapping techniques can be used to perform DSP operations by both reducing the amount of hardware involved in the circuitry and by allowing the construction of very benign architectures down to the individual cells. Such architectures can be used in aggressive VLSI/ULSI implementations. We restrict ourselves to the computation of linear filter and transform algorithms, with the inner product form, which probably account for the vast majority of digital signal processing functions implemented commercially.

We review, recent work on defining the time-frequency moments of a signal. Expressions are given for moments dropt(m)drop(omega), and of all orders n, m, in terms of the amplitude and phase of the signal and spectrum. Knowing the time-frequency moments is of interest for a variety of reasons. including their potential utility as features for classification of nonstationary signals, and also because from the moments one call construct the time-varying spectral density, or approximate it using a few moments.

We consider dispersive propagation with damping in phase-space, and derive the Wigner distribution in terms of the initial wave and the dispersion relation. The case for no damping. that is. lossless propagation, has been previously considered by Cohen, and is a special case of the more general result presented here. Simple and physically revealing approximations of the Wigner distribution in terms of the initial Wigner distribution are presented. Also. exact low-order conditional moments are given and their interpretation is discussed.

In this paper a novel method of estimating displacement of moving objects from one frame to the next in the image sequence is presented. This method is based on using the artificial neural networks for different models of motion. The two model is examined: affine flow and planar surface motion. Various circuit architectures of simple neuron-like processors are considered for estimation of motion parameters. The efficiency of the proposed networks are investigated by computer simulation for using in video processing.

This paper describes a new digital reprogrammable architecture called Field Programmable On-line oPerators (FPOP). This architecture is a kind of FPGA dedicated to very low-power implementations of numerical algorithms in signal processing or digital control applications for embedded or portable systems. FPOP is based on a reprogrammable array of on-line arithmetic operators. On-line arithmetic is a digit-serial arithmetic with most significant digits first using a redundant number system. Because of the small size of the digit-serial operators and the small number of communication wires between the operators, single chip implementation of complex numerical algorithms can be achieved using on-line arithmetic. Furthermore, the digit-level pipeline and the small size of the arithmetic operators lead to high-performance parallel computations. Compared to a standard FPGA, the basic cells in FPOP are arithmetic operators such as adders, subtracters, multipliers, dividers, square-rooters, sine or cosine operators. This granularity level allows very efficient power x delay implementations of most algorithms used in digital control and signal processing. The circuit also integrates some analog to digital and digital to analog converters.
