In [14], we have proposed two total variation (TV) minimization wavelet models for the problem of filling in missing or damaged wavelet coefficients due to lossy image transmission or communication. The proposed models can have effective and automatic control over geometric features of the inpainted images including sharp edges, even in the presence of substantial loss of wavelet coefficients, including in the low frequencies. In this paper, we investigate a modification of the model for noisy images to further improve the recovery properties by using multi-level parameters in the fitting term. Some new numerical examples are also shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the recovery.

This paper describes the VLSI implementation of a CORDIC based processor element for use in a fault-reconfigurable systolic array to compute the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a matrix. The chip implements a time redundant fault tolerance scheme, which allows processors adjacent to a faulty processor to act as computation backup during the systolic idle time. Also, processors around a fault collaborate to reroute data around the faulty processor. This form of time redundancy is attractive when tolerance to a few faults needs to be achieved with little hardware overhead.

Microphone arrays can be used for high-quality sound pick up in reverberant and noisy environments. The beamforming capabilities of microphone array systems allow highly directional sound capture, providing superior signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when compared to single microphone performance. There are two aspects in microphone array system performance: The ability of the system to locate and track sound sources, and its ability to selectively capture sound from those sources. Both aspects of system performance are strongly affected by the spatial placement of microphone sensors. A method is needed to optimize sensor placement based on geometry of the environment and assumed sound source behavior. The objective of the optimization is to obtain the greatest average system SNR using a specified number of sensors. A method is derived to evaluate array performance for a given array configuration defined by the above mentioned metrics. An overall performance function is described based on these metrics. A framework for optimum placement of sensors under the practical considerations of possible sensor placement and potential location of sound sources is also characterized.

Exhaustive scheduling and retiming of digital signal processing systems

Scheduling and retiming are important techniques used in the design of hardware and software implementations of digital signal processing algorithms. In this paper, techniques are developed for generating all scheduling and retiming solutions for a strongly connected data-flow graph, allowing a designer to explore the space of possible implementations. Formulations are developed for two scheduling problems. The first scheduling problem assumes a bit-parallel target architecture. The formulation for this problem is general because it considers retiming the dataflow graph as part of scheduling, and this formulation reduces to the retiming formulation as a special case. The second scheduling problem assumes a bit-serial target architecture. Based on these formulations, the conditions for a legal scheduling solution are derived, and a systematic technique is presented for exhaustively generating all legal scheduling solutions for a strongly connected data-flow graph. Since retiming is a special case of scheduling, this systematic technique can also be used for exhaustively generating all legal retiming solutions. A technique is also developed for exhaustively generating only those bit-parallel schedules which satisfy a given set of resource constraints, The techniques for exhaustively generating scheduling and retiming solutions are demonstrated for several filters. For example, we show that a simple filter such as the biquad has 224 possible retiming solutions for a latency of one time unit. We also show that a fifth-order wave digital elliptic filter has 4.7 million and 580 million scheduling solutions for iteration periods of 17 and 18, respectively.

NInFEA: an embedded framework for the real-time evaluation of fetal ECG extraction algorithms

Fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) extraction from non-invasive biopotential recordings is a long-standing research topic. Despite the significant number of algorithms presented in the scientific literature, it is difficult to find information about embedded hardware implementations able to provide real-time support for the required features, bridging the gap between theory and practice. This article presents the NInFEA (non-invasive fetal ECG analysis) tool, an embedded hardware/software framework based on the hybrid dual-core OMAP-L137 low-power processor for the real-time evaluation of fetal ECG extraction algorithms. The hybrid platform, including a digital signal processor (DSP) and a general-purpose processor (GPP), allows achieving the best performance compared with single-core architectures. The GPP provides a portable graphical user interface, whereas the DSP is extensively used for advanced signal processing tasks. As a case study, three state-of-the-art fetal ECG extraction algorithms have been ported onto NInFEA, along with some support routines needed to provide the additional information required by the clinicians and supported by the user interface. NInFEA can be regarded both as a reference design for similar applications and as a common embedded low-power testbed for real-time fetal ECG extraction algorithms.

The problem of detecting micropotentials in high resolution ECGs is of great importance to predict ventricular tachycardia. Since both conventional time domain and frequential domain methods present serious limitations, we address this problem using a high resolution time frequency method. The possibilities of the spectrogram and Wigner distribution (WD) are evaluated in order to analyze ECGs acquired both on patients with and without ventricular tachycardia. Furthermore, quantitative features are extracted from those representations in order to discriminate the two classes.

The aim of this paper is to present a high data rate transmission system through the ionospheric channel in the HF band (3-30 MHz). The applications expected in this study are image transmission and real-time videoconferencing. Very high rates are required compared to the standard modems (4.8 kbits/s). Therefore. an array processing performs in the multi channel receiving system. Its main originality stands in the development of a compact device of collocated antennas. the spatial responses of which are different one from each other. Besides. synchronization (Zero Crossing Detector) and spatio temporal equalization (L.M.S. algorithm) as well resort to classical and well-tested techniques involving training sequences. An experimental radio link has been under test with a range of 800 km. The corresponding results underlines the improvement of the bit transfer rate which reaches 20 kbits/s (QAM 16 in a 6 kHz bandwidth) or 30 kbits/s (QAM 16 in a 9 kHz bandwidth). Techniques for machine recognition of speech exist, but use representations of the speech signal which cannot convey some of the speech information. Alternatives from time-frequency and time-scale analysis are compared with the traditional methods with a view to improving the word recognition rate. Experiments have shown the speech recognition rate improves in some cases.

Cumulants are employed for classification and synthesis of textured images because they suppress additive Gaussian noise of unknown covariance and are capable of resolving phase and causality issues in stationary non-Gaussian random fields. Their performance is compared with existing autocorrelation based approaches which offer sample estimates of smaller variance and lower computational complexity. Nonlinear matching techniques improve over linear equation methods in estimating parameters of non-Gaussian random fields especially under model mismatch. Seasonal 1-D sequences allow for semi-stationary 2-D models and their performance is illustrated on synthetic space variant textures. The potential of prolate spheroidal basis expansion is also described for parsimonious nonstationary modeling of space variant textured images.

In this paper, a new Fourier domain reconstruction algorithm is presented which utilizes the information contained in the known region of the spectrum to estimate the frequency samples in the missing-cone area. Unlike conventional two-dimensional extrapolation techniques, this method uses bi-directional extrapolation to maximize the amount of known information in each extrapolation step. By fully utilizing the information of the measured data, the resulting image provides a more accurate estimation of the electron density distribution. The resolution improvement achieved is mainly due to the proper utilization of the available information in the measurements during the image formation process.
