Inter-symbol interference (ISI) and co-channel interference (CCI) are two major sources to signal impairment in mobile communications. To suppress both ISI and CCI, space-time adaptive processing (STAP) systems are shown to be effective, leading to increased capacity and improved quality of service. The high complexity and slow convergence, however, are often the hurdles in practical implementation of the STAP systems. Several subband array implementations have been proposed for STAP over the past a few years. These methods are to provide optimal or sub-optimal steady state performance with reduced implementation complexity and improved convergence performance. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the steady state performance of subband arrays with different decimation rates and to derive analytical expressions of the minimum mean square error (MMSE). The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based subband arrays and both unconstrained and constrained weight adaptations are considered.

In this paper, we report on efforts to develop signal processing methods appropriate for the detection of man-made electromagnetic signals in the nonlinear and nonstationary underwater electromagnetic noise environment of the littoral. Using recent advances in time series analysis methods [Huang et al., 1998], we present new techniques for detection and compare their effectiveness with conventional signal processing methods, using experimental data from recent field experiments. These techniques are based on an empirical mode decomposition which is used to isolate signals to be detected from noise without a priori assumptions. The decomposition generates a physically motivated basis for the data.

This paper presents an application of formal mathematics to create a high performance, low power architecture for time-frequency and time-scale computations implemented in asynchronous circuit technology that achieves significant power reductions and performance enhancements over more traditional approaches. Utilizing a combination of concepts from multirate signal processing and asynchronous circuit design, a case study is presented dealing with a new architecture for the fast Fourier transform, an algorithm that requires globally shared results. Then, the generalized distributive law is presented as an important paradigm for advanced asynchronous hardware design.

We argue that the standard definition of signal to noise ratio may be misleading when the signal or noise are nonstationary. We introduce a new measure that we call local signal to noise ratio (LSNR) which is well suited to take into account nonstationary situations. The advantage of our measure is that it is a local property unlike the standard SNR which is a single number representing the total duration of the signal. We simulated a number of cases to show that our measure is more indicative of the noise and signal level for nonstationary situations.

We discuss applications of time-frequency analysis to the investigation of astronomical type signals. In particular, we apply time-frequency techniques to a data set consisting of the kinetic energy in the three body problem We explain how the methods of time-frequency analysis shed light on these signals and also how the concept of multicomponent signals is applied to their decomposition. We also discuss methods to do simple filtering and estimation of the signal parameters.

In this paper, we present implementations of a pattern recognition algorithm which uses a RBF (Radial Basis Function) neural network. Our aim is to elaborate a quite efficient system which realizes real time faces tracking and identity verification in natural video sequences. Hardware implementations have been realized on an embedded system developed by our laboratory. This system is based on a DSP (Digital signal Processor) TMS320C6x. The optimization of implementations allow us to obtain a processing speed of 4.8 images (240 x 320 pixels) per second with a correct rate of 95% of faces tracking and identity verification.

This paper considers a class of blind beamforming problems in which the amount of prior information is very limited. The array sensors are placed in unknown locations within a geographical region, and have unknown frequency/spatial response. The sensors communicate synchronously with a main processor unit. The array is illuminated by a source, which may be narrow- or broadband, in near or far field. Additional disturbances may be present, in the form of interferers, possibly correlated or coherent with the main signal, and additive noise. The goal is required to steer beam toward the desired signal. Four schemes are presented, each based on the type of prior available information.

When a continuous-time signal is sampled at a rate less than the Nyquist criterion, the signal is aliased. This distortion is usually irrecoverable. However, we show that for certain AM-FM signals, the distortion due to aliasing can be mitigated and an unaliased version of the signal can be recovered from its aliased samples. We present a method for determining whether or not a signal has potentially been distorted by aliasing and an algorithm for recovering an unaliased version of the signal. The method is based on the manifestation of aliasing in the time-frequency plane, and estimating the instantaneous phase/frequency of the aliased signal.

Implementing Jacobi algorithms in parallel VLSI processor arrays is a non-trivial task, in particular when the algorithms are parametrized with respect to size and the architectures are parametrized with respect to space-time trade-offs. The paper is concerned with an approach to implement several time-adaptive Jacobi-type algorithms on a parallel processor array, using only Cordic arithmetic and asynchronous communications, such that any degree of parallelism, ranging from single-processor up to full-size array implementation, is supported by a `universal' processing unit. This result is attributed to a gracious interplay between algorithmic and architectural engineering.
