Time-frequency distributions (TFDs) have proven useful in a wide variety of nonstationary signalprocessing applications. While sophisticated optimal bilinear TFDs have been developed to extract the maximum possible time- frequency information from signals, certain applications dictate simpler linear, running-FFT processing techniques. In this paper, we propose a signal-dependent short-time Fourier transform/spectrogram that enjoys many of the advantages of optimal bilinear TFDs yet retains the simplicity and efficiency of running-FFT processing. In addition, we extend the optimal kernel design problem to linear spaces of signals.

We show that a sufficient and necessary condition for a large eigen-gap is that A is a "hub" matrix in the sense that it has dominant columns. Pitch tracking algorithms have been proposed in many digital speech processing literature. Among the practical use of pitch tracking are: improved recognition, improved speech synthesis, and semantic disambiguation. A similar problem to pitch tracking when applied to music input signals, is note tracking, i.e. detecting all the notes in the perceived music. The general problem of music recognition seems to be beyond the techniques that have been accomplished by the advances in digital speech processing. A "real music" signal is composed of multiple sound from several instruments, and digitally separating the mix into individual channels/tracks is a hard problem to solve. The algorithm described in this paper assumes that the input signal is produced by a single source and further it focuses on monophonic sound, as opposed to polyphonic sound where two or more notes are played at the same time. The algorithm described below has been implemented on an Android device using proper building blocks (Activity and Service) that comply with the Android design guidelines to achieve the best performance. In addition to the standard Android libraries from the latest Android SDK, the application also relies on a third-party library for digital signalprocessing routines. The Android implementation of the algorithm has been tested using input sources from human voice and musical instruments. The paper also shows the experimental results of handling these input sources.

In future 5G mobile networks, radio access network functions will be virtualized and implemented on centralized cloud platforms. In principle, this allows for more advancedalgorithms of joint processing and offers the ability to balance the computational load. However, the shift of functionality on a cloud-platform also imposes challenges on the design of the applied algorithms. In this paper, we analyse the implementation of forward error correction decoding algorithms on general purpose hardware, which draws the main computational burden of signalprocessing in the uplink. Although the protocol stack introduces strict timing requirements we demonstrate by numerical results the feasibility of such implementation.

Despite steady progress in the miniaturization of pulse oximeters over the years, significant challenges remain since advancedsignalprocessing must be implemented efficiently in real-time by a relatively small size wearable device. The goal of this study was to investigate several potential digital signalprocessingalgorithms for computing arterial oxygen saturation (SpO(2)) and heart rate (HR) in a battery-operated wearable reflectance pulse oximeter that is being developed in our laboratory for use by medics and first responders in the field. We found that a differential measurement approach, combined with a low-pass filter (LPF), yielded the most suitable signalprocessing technique for estimating SpO(2), while a signal derivative approach produced the most accurate HR measurements.

Literature shows a lot of lane detection algorithms can work in real time with good results. However, they require much computer processing and cannot be embedded in a vehicle ECU without deep software optimizations. In this paper, we discuss the embeddability of lane detection algorithms by comparing state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of functional performance and computational timing. We identify what essential parts of lane detection are time consuming, and show these parts can be computed in real time on embedded systems.

The important performance factors of algorithms are adaptation or convergence (the probability of, and the speed of), and computational cost (proportional to the algorithm complexity). The improvement in convergence often comes with higher computational needs. In this report we exploit the diversity in algorithms by using cooperative processes. An odd number of cooperative processes running simultaneously participate in a simple majority-vote decision method to improve the convergence speed of the corresponding application. The iterative algorithms concurrently progressing require higher computational resources, however only the most computationally-efficient algorithm remains active after the initial convergence is achieved. Additional technique is essential to synchronize the process delays of participating algorithms.

Under advanced Research Prjects Agency (ARPA) sponsorship, Loral Defense Systems, Arizona has developed algorithms and techniques for suppressing radio frequency interference (RFI) in radar signals. These techniques use conventional signalprocessing elements in an unconventional manner to localize the RFI energy in a domain where it can be easily distinguished from radar returns and removed from the radar data with minimal effect on coherent radar signal image formation processing. Significantly improved synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images have been obtained using these techniques. Flight tests of a Loral airborne SAR system operating from 500 to 800 MHz have provided the SAR data used to develop and refine these RFI suppression techniques.
