Over the last decade Digital signal processing (DSP) has evolved from being a term known by only a few specialists, to a household term. The growth in DSP applied in e.g., consumer, medical, communications, networking and computing devices has been spectacular. In fact, the digital signal processor market has grown 40% per year since 1988 and this figure is expected to continue over the next 10 years. At the same time the extreme improvement in hardware technologies has been paving the way for designing dedicated architectures for realtime execution of still more complex DSP algorithms, continuously decreasing the power and silicon consumption required to perform certain functionalities. Consequently, we consider advanced DSP topics as being essential in the curriculum for a still growing number of electrical engineering students. These topics are basically related to 1) the design of highly complex DSP algorithms according to given specifications, and 2) realtime implementation of these algorithms using various and conceptually different hardware architectures. Aalborg University, which has a long standing tradition for project-oriented teaching in traditional DSP theory at the Master level, therefore in 1994 launched a new Master programme in "DSP algorithms and ASIC Architectures". Now, after five years of very successful execution of this programme, we in this paper would like to report on our experiences.

This paper summarizes a study investigating the potential insertion of embedded high performance computing technology into a legacy processor architecture such as that found in U.S. Army ground platforms. The intended task to be performed by the embedded high performance computing technology is that of aiding human operators in their target acquisition activities by cueing these operators to potential targets. Insertion of this technology is constrained by two sets of requirements. The first set of requirements is given by the ground platform, such as a tank. The second set of requirements is formed from the mathematical algorithms used to process the sensor data. Results of this joint U.S. Army CECOM Night Vision & Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) and Defense advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) study show no commercially available computing technology can meet all requirements. The study did show that inclusion of adaptable computing technology allowed most of the requirements to be met. This paper summarizes the methodology and models used to obtain these results as well as the impact of adaptable computing technology to embedded ATR processors.

The U. S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), as part of its mission-funded applied research program, has been evaluating the utility of a low-frequency, ultra-wideband (UWB) imaging radar to detect tactical vehicles concealed by foliage. Measurement programs conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground and elsewhere have yielded a significant and unique database of extremely wideband and (in some cases) fully polarimetric data, Complementary efforts have been underway to develop high-performance algorithms as well as data visualization and assessment tools to generate very high-quality, low-artifact-level imagery for use in target detection and exploitation studies. Prior reports have concentrated on discussions of emerging detection concepts. Key strategy has been to exploit frequency-dependent scattering to identify and locate likely targets-particularly the application of a "spatial affinity" technique between detection lists separately generated at VHF frequencies versus UHF. The utility of this approach is now being evaluated more broadly by the UWB radar community. A large quantity of appropriate data has been measured by two separate airborne radars-a VHF radar (Coherent Ali RAdio BAnd Sensing (CARABAS)) [1,2] and a UHF radar (the P-3 radar) [3,4]. In support of Defense advanced Research Project Agency's (DARPA) national-scope initiative in foliage penetration, ARL is using tools and algorithms developed as part of our mission program to perform image formation and evaluate various spatial affinity concepts on this freshly measured data. The reader will find this paper is organized into three complementary sections. First, we define the research objectives ARL and other defense organizations share. We then report in detail on the signal processing/image formation techniques developed as part of our mission program. Currently, the relatively low-level development tools available at most tertiary institutions greatly limit the scope of real-time control projects which can be tackled at an undergraduate level. Although more sophisticated tools are available on the market, their prices are prohibitive. This paper presents a low-cost, integrated environment which allows for rapid prototyping of advanced control algorithms designed in Simulink on an affordable DSP based processing platforms in real-time.

The exact knowledge of the sound field within an enclosure is essential for a number of applications in electro-acoustics. Conventional methods for the assessment of room acoustics model the sound propagation in analogy to the propagation of light. More advanced computational methods rely on the numerical solution of the wave equation. A recently presented method is based on multidimensional wave digital principles. It allows a physically exact numerical modelling of the relevant acoustical effects and yields robust algorithms. This contribution presents a new foundation of the multidimensional wave digital principle as applied to room acoustics. It starts from the first principles of physics. From there, the derivation of the algorithm only involves basic knowledge of numerical mathematics, linear algebra, and multidimensional system theory. An example for the simulation of dynamic three-dimensional sound propagation demonstrates the capability of the method.

TMS320C6x, the most advanced DSP, is analyzed for its architecture and application development issues. Potential improvement of these DSPs is proposed, and the current directions for DSP processors are generalized.

In mobile communications, smart antenna systems that utilize an antenna array and perform advanced signal processing techniques can achieve greater channel capacity and improve link quality by selective reception/transmission at the base station. However, development of adaptive signal processing algorithms for smart antenna system applications require the accurate knowledge about the multichannel propagation characteristics. A few experimental results on the spatial signature variation of a uniform linear array (ULA) at 900 MHz have been reported. This paper presents the experimental results on the channel propagation characteristic variations of a 1.8 GHz smart antenna system using a uniform circular array (UCA) in moving mobile scenarios. The results indicate the stability of direction-of-arrival (DOAs) of multipath components in all scenarios, and the instability of the spatial signatures in scenarios with strong multipaths.

This paper describes a testbed which simulates a third generation code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless link. The designer of next generation wideband CDMA systems has the choice of a wide array of advanced signal processing algorithms and a variety of operating environments. The Rice testbed is a tool to evaluate these design options and trade-offs in different system scenarios. The backbone of this testbed is a wireless CDMA multiuser link built using Simulink and Matlab. An efficient method of system modeling is used to accelerate the simulations. The testbed also uses a method for rapid prototyping of algorithms and DSP-based simulation acceleration for the new algorithm complexity and performance evaluation.
