Dual-band Infrared-based passive Missile Warning Sensors (MWS) are under development at USAF Wright Laboratory and other DoD labs to provide aircraft with cost-effective robust detection and tracking of Infrared Surface-to-Air Missile threats out to their maximum launch ranges. Typically, such sensors are limited by the presence of heavy background clutter, solar glints, and sensor noise which lower the likelihood of missile detection. The heavy background clutter may also cause non-missile objects such as flares, glints, and smokestacks to be improperly declared as missiles. The longer detection range of missiles by these sensors is also limited by sensor noise;most noticeably in tropical weather conditions. Atlantic Aerospace and USAF Wright Laboratory have demonstrated two robust algorithms: a Geometric Whitening Filter which enhances the signal-to-clutter ratio and a Morphological Track Before Detect algorithm which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio. Use of these two algorithms in tandem will extend current advanced Developmental MWS prototype sensors to detect Infrared-guided Surface-to-Air Missiles in heavy urban clutter and tropical maritime weather conditions.

The radar returns from some classes of time-varying point targets can be represented by the discrete-time signal plus noise model: x(t) = s(t) + [nu(t) + eta(t)] = (P-1)Sigma(i=0) A(i)e(j2 pi fi/fst) + nu(t) + eta(t), t is an element of 0,...,.N - 1, f(i) = kf(I) + f(o) where the received signal x(t) corresponds to the radar return from the target of interest from one azimuth-range cell. The signal has an unknown number of components, P, unknown complex amplitudes A(i) and frequencies f(i). The frequency parameters f(o) and f(I) are unknown, although constrained such that f(o) < fI/2 and parameter k is an element of {-u,...,-2,-1,0,1,2,...,upsilon) is constrained such that the component frequencies f(i) are bound by [-fs/2,fs/2). The noise term nu(t), is typically coloured, and represents clutter, interference and various noise sources. It is unknown, except that Sigma(t)\nu(t)\(2) < infinity;in general, nu(t) is not well modelled as an auto-regressive process of known order. The additional noise term eta(t) represents time-invariant point targets in the same azimuth-range cell. An important characteristic of the target is the unknown parameter, f(I), representing the frequency interval between harmonic lines. It is desired to determine an estimate of f(I) from N samples of x(t). We propose an algorithm to estimate f(I) based on Thomson's harmonic line F-Test, which is part of the multi-window spectrum estimation method and demonstrate the proposed estimator applied to target echo time series collected using an experimental HF skywave radar.

Novel FMCW radar concepts for precise distance and velocity measurement are presented. The systems incorporate a SAW reference delay line used to measure the instantaneous phase of the oscillator signal. The algorithms evaluate the specific effects of Doppler frequency shifts in the presence of phase errors such as oscillator phase noise or a nonlinear FM modulation. A method that combines a sweep linearisation with a predistorted modulation signal and a constant phase interval sampling technique are presented. ARMA-modeling for high resolution spectral estimation is applied in order to obtain high Doppler and distance resolution at a moderate sweep bandwidth. Furthermore, a nonlinear FM approach is shown that particularly uses phase error effects to determine the object speed. Using this technique the optimalFMCW radar distance resolution at a given sweep bandwidth is obtained independently of the Doppler resolution. The functionality of the concepts is demonstrated at millimetrewave frequencies. The paper illustrates, that the combination of advanced signal processing schemes with a cost-effective front-end can provide high performance microwave sensors.

This paper considers applications of automatic speech recognition and speaker verification techniques in developing efficient Voice Messaging Systems for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) based communication systems. The prototype demonstrator presented was developed in the framework of cooperative project which involves two research institutes: the signal processing Laboratory (LTS) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the Dalle Molle Institute for Perceptive Artificial Intelligence, Martigny (IDIAP), and three industrial partners: the advanced Communication Services (aComm), SunMicrosystems (Switzerland) and the Swiss Telecom PTT [1]. The project is supported by the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI). The goal of the project is to make available basic technologies for automatic speech recognition and speaker verification on multi-processor SunSPARC workstation and SwissNet (ISDN) platform to industrial partners. The developed algorithms provide the necessary tools to design and implement workstation oriented voice messaging demonstrators for telephone quality Swiss French. The speech recognition algorithms are based on speaker independent flexible vocabulary technology and speaker verification is performed by a number of techniques executed in parallel, and combined for optimal decision. The recognition results obtained validate the flexible vocabulary approach which offers the potential to build word models for any application vocabulary from a single set of phonetic sub-word units trained with the Swiss French Polyphone database. © 1997 5th European conference on Speech Communication and Technology, EUROSPEECH 1997. The design process for fixed-point implementations either in software or in hardware requires a bit-true specification of the algorithm in order to analyze quantization effects on an algorithmical level, abstracting from implementational details. On the other hand, system design starts from a floating-point description, so that a transformation of a floating-point description into a fixed-point description becomes necessary. Within this paper we present a tool that allows an automated, interactive transformation from floating-point ANSI-C into a bit-true specification based on a new data type fixed that is introduced as an extension to ANSI-C. The concept is rooted in a sophisticated data dependency analysis that allows to handle control structures as well as pointers. It is part of the fixed-point design environment FRIDGE (1) which includes an advanced simulator that covers the extended ANSI-C syntax as well as target specific compilers which allow to generate efficient fixed-point implementations either for HW or for SW, starting from the bit-true algorithm specification.

The Wright Lab Combat information Division's System-Oriented HRR Automatic Recognition Program (SHARP) plans to develop and mature advanced air-to-ground high range resolution (HRR) Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) capabilities for transition into suitable operational Air Force airborne platforms. ATR technologies have historically been template and feature based and generally provide good performance but at the expense of robustness. However, because of the need far robust ATR performance in an operational scenario, model-based ATR is being considered for possible future transition. This paper presents preliminary results on research dealing with what is commonly referred to as the 'training on synthetic testing on measured' problem (TOS-TOM) in which algorithms trained on synthetic signatures often do nor perform well when tested on measured data. The data trajectory realignment approach proposed in this paper makes the claim that poor TOS-TOM performance is the result of sufficient differences between the trajectories of synthetic data and their measured counterpart. An adaptive model was developed which captures the trajectory relationship between synthetic and measured data and adaptively estimates the model parameters needed for realignment. Surrogate data sets were used for the preliminary proof of concept experiments and initial 2 class results showed more than 20% increase in probability of correct classification.

Digital signal Processors (DSPs) have become key components for the implementation of digital signal processing systems. With DSPs moving into new application domains and the increasing complexity of modern DSP architectures, efficient programming support receives major interest. Therefore, an optimizing compiler becomes a must for future DSP-architectures. Todays DSP compilers result in significant overheads both in memory consumption and program execution time compared to hand-written assembly code. This is mainly due to an inefficient compiler support of the DSP specific architectural features, such as the modulo-addressing capability which is an enabling feature for a large class of DSP algorithms. Within this paper we analyze why existing compilers fail short in supporting the modulo-addressing mode and present a compiler concept that allows the efficient utilization of this feature. We describe how an advanced compiler optimization strategy allows a near optimum support of the modulo-addressing mode, and point out why this concept is favorable to DSP-specific language extensions.

A bunch-by-bunch longitudinal feedback system has been designed and built to control coupled-bunch instabilities in the PEP-II machine. A prototype system has been installed at the advanced Light Source at LBNL. Programmable DSPs allow longitudinal feedback processing in conjunction with data acquisition or instrumentation algorithms. Here we describe techniques developed for different beam and system diagnostics, such as measurements of the modal growth and damping rates and measurements of the bunch-by-bunch currents. Results from the advanced Light Source are presented to illustrate these techniques.
