Novel FMCW radar concepts for precise distance and velocity measurement are presented. The systems incorporate a SAW reference delay line used to measure the instantaneous phase of the oscillator signal. The algorithms evaluate the specific effects of Doppler frequency shifts in the presence of phase errors such as oscillator phase noise or a nonlinear FM modulation. A method that combines a sweep linearisation with a predistorted modulation signal and a constant phase initerval sampling technique are presented. ARMA-modeling for high resolution spectral estimation is applied in order to obtain high Doppler and distance resolution at a moderate sweep bandwidth. Furthermore, a nonlinear FM approach is shown that particularly uses phase error effects to determine the object speed. Using this technique the optimal FMCW radar distance resolution at a given sweep bandwidth is obtained independently of the Doppler resolution. The functionality of the concepts is demonstrated at millimetrewave frequencies. The paper illustrates, that the combination of advanced signal processing schemes with a cost-effective front-end can provide high performance microwave sensors.

A bunch-by-bunch longitudinal feedback system has been designed and built to control coupled-bunch instabilities in the PEP-II machine. A prototype system has been installed at the advanced Light Source at LBNL. Programmable DSPs allow longitudinal feedback processing in conjunction with data acquisition or instrumentation algorithms. Here we describe techniques developed for different beam and system diagnostics, such as measurements of the modal growth and damping rates and measurements of the bunch-by-bunch currents. Results from the advanced Light Source are presented to illustrate these techniques.

Dual-band Infrared-based passive Missile Warning Sensors (MWS) are under development at USAF Wright Laboratory and other DoD labs to provide aircraft with cost-effective robust detection and tracking of Infrared Surface-to-Air Missile threats out to their maximum launch ranges. Typically, such sensors are limited by the presence of heavy background clutter, solar glints, and sensor noise which lower the likelihood of missile detection. The heavy background clutter may also cause non-missile objects such as flares, glints, and smokestacks to be improperly declared as missiles. The longer detection range of missiles by these sensors is also limited by sensor noise; most noticeably in tropical weather conditions. Atlantic Aerospace and USAF Wright Laboratory have demonstrated two robust algorithms: a Geometric Whitening Filter which enhances the signal-to-clutter ratio and a Morphological Track Before Detect algorithm which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio. Use of these two algorithms in tandem will extend current advanced Developmental MWS prototype sensors to detect Infrared-guided Surface-to-Air Missiles in heavy urban clutter and tropical maritime weather conditions.

Artificial neural networks have evolved from their biologically inspired roots to a well established means to solve a broad spectrum of engineering problems. Their embedding into modern statistics has provided the necessary theoretical foundation for challenging engineering tasks, such as advanced real time image and signal processing. These are exemplary demonstrations for the applicability of this approach to complex information processing. However, the large number of applications must not obscure the fact that there are some major unsolved problems concerning neural networks. There are still no satisfactorily constructive ways to determine the optimal structure (elements as well as organization) or the learning and evaluation dynamics. Ongoing research addresses these problems. In addition to pursuing this direction, one can ask what other lessons we can learn from biology concerning complex information processing. Our goal is to sketch a possible pathway from neural networks to more comprehensive neural strategies.

Automatic recognition of various road distresses is of considerable interest since it facilitates preventive road maintenance before cracks and potholes become too severe, leading to economic benefits. The current approach of using human operators to categorize road distresses is both labor-intensive and time consuming. We describe a two-step algorithm that automates road-distress identification with high accuracy. After constant-false-alarm-rate (CFAR) detection at the pixel level, subimage processing classifies each subimage of 64/spl times/64 pixels (each pixel is 1 mm by 1 mm) into crack, patch/pothole (P2), sealed crack, and false alarm. Object processing performs spatial clustering and object segmentation prior to final distress identification. The major challenge is integrating a number of signal and image processing algorithms to effectively deal with false alarms, film artifacts, and nonstationary distress characteristics and background. We explore how various signal and image processing concepts in signal projection, nonlinear filtering, feature optimization, image coding, and pattern recognition can be judiciously combined for computationally efficient and robust identification of road distresses. Our data analysis of 112 image frames (each frame contains 6144/spl times/4095 pixels) shows that the overall system performance at the object level is as follows: a P/sub D/ of 0.90 (average of 74 subimages per detected object), probability of correct distress identification of 0.96, and a P/sub FA/ of 0.79 false objects (average of 11 subimages per false object) per image frame.

In this paper we present practical techniques for implementing Givens rotations based on the well-known CORDIC algorithm. Rotations are the basic operation in many high performance adaptive filtering schemes as well as numerous other advanced signal processing algorithms relying on matrix decompositions. To improve the efficiency of these methods, we propose to use "approximate rotations", whereby only a few (i.e. r/spl Lt/b, where b is the operand word length) elementary angles of the original CORDIC sequence are applied, so as to reduce the total number of required shift add operations. This seamingly rather ad hoc and heuristic procedure constitutes a representative example of a very useful design concept termed "approximate signal processing" recently introduced and formally exposed by S.H. Nawab et al. (1997), concerning the trade-off between system performance and implementation complexity, i.e. between accuracy and resources. This is a subject of increasing importance with respect to the efficient realization of demanding signal processing tasks. We present the application of the described rotation schemes to QRD-RLS filtering in wireless communications, specifically high speed channel equalization and beamforming, i.e. for intersymbol and co-channel/interuser interference suppression, respectively. It is shown via computer simulations that the convergence behavior of the scheme using approximate Givens rotations is insensitive to the value of r, and that the misadjustment error decreases as r is increased, opening zip possibilities for "incremental refinement" strategies.

There is an increasing need for low cost, fully integrated digital phone systems including telephony functions, fax, hands-free and answering machines. For the latter feature, a high quality, low bit rate speech coder is recommended. It should require only a reasonable complexity to stay competitive in this product range. Recent advances in CELP speech coding have shown the feasibility of this concept for this kind of consumer applications. A 4.8 kbps Hamming code excited linear prediction (HCELP) coder is proposed in this paper with an algebraic structure for the codebook. It features a very fast search algorithm which has been evaluated to be 3 times faster than usual algebraic codebook search procedures. Quality evaluation yielded satisfactory results. Implementation aspects and the integration of the coder in an advanced telephone set are also detailed.

A testbed for investigation of heterogeneous and reconfigurable data network fabrics supporting a parallel DSP computational accelerator is described. The DSP processors are large-grained processors (Analog Devices SHARC DSPs), with a variety of parallel DSP array architectures possible. The network fabric is intended to be reconfigurable (within a rich but necessarily limited set of structures) to adapt to the needs of a sequence of image processing algorithms being executed (e.g., in a medical image processing environment). The testbed will exploit conventional FPGA components to provide reconfigurable network structures and will exploit commercial high-speed interconnect components emerging for applications such as board-to-board applications. As a computational accelerator, the testbed is intended to be controlled by a host processor, with the host processor cooperating in the definition of the changes in the structure of the network structure as execution of a sequence of image processing algorithms proceeds.

Some of the most significant image quality indexes are reviewed and compared with a new method for blockness distortion evaluation. The paper begins with a brief survey on classical measures based on numerical difference between the original and reconstructed image data (e.g., MSE, SNR and PSNR) and advanced methods aiming at considering the perceptive aspects of image degradation (e.g., Hosaka (1986) plots and other methods based on human visual system properties like information content or perceptual image distortion). After, four innovative methods for blockness distortion measurement are proposed: two based on DCT analysis, and two on differential Sobel operator. Results on standard pictures confirm the efficiency of the proposed measures.

This report describes an advanced 1000 kVA AC cold mill drive systems in a modern steel manufacturing facility. The presented systems consist of an AC-to-DC PWM power converter and two PWM inverters to drive each 700 kW induction motor, and all algorithms are implemented using a TMS 320C40 digital signal processor (DSP) system that provides high computing power by employing a high level of parallel processing. The displacement power factor of the input line current is always unity and total power factor including harmonics is higher than 98%. The common DC link voltage is regulated within 1% of its rated value regardless of input voltage fluctuation and output load transient. The system achieves 1:5 field weakening control range. The available speed control bandwidth of the motor is about 60 Hz and torque bandwidth is about 350 Hz. Since July 1997, it has been operating with full capacity at Pohang steel mill company (Posco) in Kwang-yang, Korea.
