In this paper, we present a low power targeted high-level synthesis framework for the synthesis of single chip Application Specific DSP (Digital signal processing) architectures. This new framework is based on minimizing the switching activity on the functional units as well as the global buses. The main focus of the developed method is minimizing the power during partitioning and binding phases of high-level synthesis. A Stochastic Evolution based technique has been used for partitioning the given data flow graph describing the DSP algorithm. Experimental results were highly encouraging with power reduction of up to 60% on certain benchmark designs.

A unified global and local closed-orbit feedback system has been implemented at the advanced Photon Source in order to stabilize both particle and photon beams. Beam stability requirements in the band up to 50 Hz are 17 /spl mu/m in the horizontal plane and 4.4 /spl mu/m vertically. Orbit feedback algorithms are implemented digitally using multiple digital signal processors, with computing power distributed in 20 VME crates around the storage ring. Each crate communicates with all others via a fast reflective memory network. The system has access to 320 RF beam position monitors together with X-ray beam position monitors in both insertion device and bending magnet beamlines. Up to 317 corrector magnets are available to the system. The global system reduces horizontal RMS beam motion at the X-ray source points by more than a factor of two in the frequency band from 10 mHz to 50 Hz.

Degrees of visible determinism in time series of acoustic signals observed for automobile components are estimated using a diagnostic algorithm for diversity in the directions of nearby trajectories generated from the time series in phase space. Degrees of the diversity are shown to be useful as an indicator of mechanical damage of the components.

In automatic target recognition (ATR) and time-series prediction, we use a training or historical database to tune the parameters of a classifier, which then operates on unknown data. In general, statistical properties in terms of class-conditional probability density functions are assumed to be similar between training and test data. Unfortunately, in many real-world applications, this assumption is violated, leading to erratic or even poor ATR performance. In this paper, we explore several methodologies to overcome this problem. We assess the efficacy of two algorithms with real data to demonstrate the importance of simple, intuitive solutions in dealing with difficult situations.

The APS real-time orbit feedback system uses 38 correctors per plane and has available up to 320 rf beam position monitors. Orbit correction is implemented using multiple digital signal processors. Singular value decomposition is used to generate a correction matrix from a linear response matrix model of the storage ring lattice. This paper evaluates the performance of the APS system in terms of its ability to correct localized and distributed sources of orbit motion. The impact of regulator gain and bandwidth, choice of beam position monitors, and corrector dynamics are discussed. The weighted least-squares algorithm is reviewed in the context of local feedback.

The paper deals with the control architecture and algorithms of a system consisting of a Puma 560 robot and a three-fingered (9 degree-of-freedom) robot hand. The whole control system is divided into three subsystems. The first subsystem is the robot control system consisting of a host PC with power electronics and three special boards containing DSPs. The ARPS robot programming language runs on the host PC. The second subsystem is the control system of the tendon-driven TUB dextrous hand based on a PC with special analog cards. The control programs are running under QNX real-time operation system. The third subsystem is a low-cost stereo vision system consisting of a PC with Windows NT, a video blaster card and three CCD matrix cameras. Different types of intelligence (expert knowledge, graphic simulation, stereo image processing, advanced control algorithms) are distributed in the components of the whole control system.

An algorithmic specific architecture has been developed based on the newly introduced band-matching algorithm (BDMA) for computing motion vectors. The BDMA offers better performance than both the fixed size and variable size block matching algorithms as it uses less vectors and only processes the relevant parts of the image instead of the whole image. The main modules of the BDMA architecture are the encoder and decoder. The memory in the encoder is classified into three types: storing images, storing the image of difference, storing the bands. The first memory is arranged in parallel banks which will enhance the performance considerably. In the second memory, registers are used for temporary storage during filtering. The third memory is used for storing the bands. A single code book is employed to identify the type of edges.

The closed architecture of conventional robot control systems is an obstacle to many robot applications, especially to the research projects in which the control schemes or the system parameters used by robot controllers need to be modified. For such cases, the architecture of the robot control system is obviously required to be open and interactive with users. This paper presents a new robot control system with open architecture and an interactive user interface developed at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. First, we present the architecture for our system hardware and software followed with simple explanations of each module. Then, we focus our attention on the system software and make a detail explanation of a crucial module the communication module of the system. Finally, we give a real world example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

In this paper, we explore the combination of the time dependent adaptive filter (TDAF) and the model-based frequency modulation (FM) demodulator for advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) interference rejection. The time dependent adaptive filter, which is blindly adapted using the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), can reject interference by exploiting the cyclostationary and constant envelope properties of the AMPS signal. The model-based FM demodulator uses a parametric method based on forward-backward linear prediction to provide high resolution frequency estimates for distinguishing interference from the desired signal. Examples are provided showing the performance of the combination of the CMA-constrained TDAF and the model-based demodulator in various signal environments. The computer simulation results show that this combination provides better performance for co-channel interference rejection than using only the TDAF or the model-based demodulator.

We present an algorithmic approach to the design of low-power frequency-selective digital filters based on the concepts of adaptive filtering and approximate processing. The proposed approach uses a feedback mechanism in conjunction with well-known implementation structures for finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters;Our algorithm is designed to reduce the total switched capacitance by dynamically varying the filter order based on signal statistics. A factor of 10 reduction in power consumption over fixed-order filters is demonstrated for the filtering of speech signals.
