Synergistic use of multiple-sensor data for improved situational awareness has been of great interest in distributed signal processing. The key factor in multisensor fusion (MSF) deals with accountability and information extraction. Accountability refers to the level of performance improvement attributable to each sensor. That is, in order for us to make a judicious decision on the final sensor configuration, performance ambiguity must be minimized. Furthermore, MSF algorithms must be able to extract all the useful information from raw sensor data. In short, we need to develop a meaningful metric that measures the extent to which the MSF performance approaches the theoretical upper limit similar in concept to the Cramer-Rao bounds (CRB) in parameter estimation. In this paper, we develop an interesting MSF algorithm and introduce a meaningful metric to quantify the degree of information loss associated with each sensor as well as the entire suite of sensors. We illustrate the utility of our algorithm with one insightful example.

A fast frequency domain method for quadrature-to-directional format conversion of Doppler ultrasound signals is described. The algorithm requires only one complex FFT and one inverse FFT. Since the technique relies on the manipulation of phase information in the frequency domain after the complex FFT, it is named the Spectral Translocation Method (STM). The theoretical description is verified by simulation and practical implementations. The algorithm has been implemented in real-time using a commercially available digital signal processor board. Results show that more than 50 dB channel separation is achievable and widespread use of DSP chips makes this method attractive.

Traffic capacity improvement is a strong necessity of cellular systems. One of the main techniques to increase capacity is the utilization of microcells. However, as cells are reduced, handoff rates are increased. In this paper the influence of the handoff process in the channel holding time is studied. The channel holding time is defined as the time duration between the instant that a channel is occupied by a call and the time it is released by either the completion of the call or a handoff. It is shown by simulation that the channel holding time distribution can be fitted by an exponential distribution for signal strength based handoff algorithms.

A structure for adaptive AR spectral estimation based on multi-band decomposition of the linear prediction error is analyzed and two RLS algorithms to solve the related adaptive filtering problem are derived. The presented structure gives rise to spectral estimates that represent the true underlying spectrum with better fidelity than conventional LS methods by allowing an arbitrary trade-off between variance of spectral estimates and tracking ability of the estimator along the frequency domain. The linear prediction error is decomposed through a power complementary filter bank and components of each band are analyzed by different window lengths, allowing long windows to track slowly varying signals and short windows to observe fastly varying components. The correlation matrix of the input signal is shown to satisfy both time-update and order-update properties for rectangular windowing functions, and an RLS algorithm based on each property is presented. Also, simulations comparing the performance of conventional and the proposed multi-band LS methods are depicted and discussed.

Recently numerous advanced control techniques have been developed for motion control of electromechanical systems containing unknown parameters and uncertainties such as variations in payloads and unmodeled friction. Due to the limitation of sampling rates in low-cost, general-purpose microprocessors, it is difficult to implement those advanced algorithms in real-time for industrial applications. This is particularly true for high-speed and high precision control of various motion devices. In this paper we develop a rule-based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for trajectory tracking control of an x-y axis positioning table. Using a DSP-based real-time control testbed, we were able to perform experiments with different sampling frequencies, motion speeds, and payloads. The effects of these parameters on the control performance are examined. The control performance of the FLC system proposed here is compared experimentally with that of a conventional PI control system. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system, especially for high-speed and high precision control of the x-y table with parameter variations.

The ability to turn advanced digital receiver concepts into silicon VLSI is fast becoming the key factor in competing successfully to realize commercial mobile communication systems. Behavioral synthesis is central to the next-generation of high-level VLSI design automation tools that allow designing at the algorithm level and rapid exploration of the VLSI architecture space. We demonstrate how to leverage behavioral synthesis technology in the design of digital transceivers. We propose and demonstrate a new DSP system design methodology where digital communications engineers can interactively explore detection and estimation algorithms, architectures, and their IC implementation. We demonstrate how the designer can explore algorithms and architectures using three examples from portable and mobile communication modem applications: an MFSK receiver for paging applications, a receiver front-end channel filter for a wideband modem, and a Viterbi decoder used for trellis-coded modulation. Using the methodology, we demonstrate how system designers can exercise control over algorithm parameters as well as architectural parameters such as hardware area, speed, and latency. This allows algorithm designers to quickly explore different VLSI architectures that execute the same algorithm.

MAT2DSP is a MATLAB toolbox, currently under development, whose function is to estimate the implementation requirements of algorithms specified in the form of a MATLAB program. This toolbox is aimed at providing researchers developing advanced signal and image processing algorithms, a quick and convenient way of estimating what would be needed to implement their algorithm on a specified processor. MAT2DSP analyzes the user program and generates reports on its computational requirements.

Least-squares sine-fit algorithms are used extensively in signal-processing applications, The parameter estimates produced by such algorithms are subject to both random and systematic errors when the record of input samples consists of a fundamental sine wave corrupted by harmonic distortion or noise, The errors occur because, in general,such sine-fits will incorporate a portion of the harmonic distortion or noise into their estimate of the fundamental, Bounds are developed for these errors for least-squares four-parameter (amplitude, frequency, phase, and offset) sine-fit algorithms, The errors are functions of the number of periods in the record, the number of samples in the record, the harmonic order, and fundamental and harmonic amplitudes and phases, The bounds do not apply to cases in which harmonic components become aliased.

We review the standard frequency domain methods for modulation classification as a baseline for comparison with new approaches. A new procedure based on the singular value decomposition of a particular data matrix is developed. This matrix has some very interesting properties that facilitate a solution of a difficult problem of QPSK versus MSK classification. Performance of the new method is assessed via simulations and compared against those in the published literature.
