The most informative electroencephalographic (EEG) features related to basic Executive Functions (EFs) were identified by exploiting the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), an eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) method. In particular, Working Memory (WM) and Inhibitory Control (IC) were tested by exposing participants to N-Back and Go-NoGo tasks. Currently, eXplainable AI (XAI) methods are scarcely investigated in the framework of EEG signal processing. Specific EEG features of EFs activation are still poorly explored. EEG data from 13 healthy participants were gathered during rest condition and cognitive task executions. In particular, N-Back (activating WM) and Go-NoGo (activating IC) tasks were administered with two difficulty levels. SHAP identified Absolute Delta Power in Fp1 and Fp2 as the two most significant features for both WM and IC, when the two experiments were analyzed separately. The same two features emerged as the most significative when SHAP was applied on a classification problem involving the two tasks at the highest difficulty level. Absolute power of Delta Fp1 and Fp2 resulted statistically significantly lower in the Go-NoGo task compared to the N-Back. These results are consistent with a condition of suppression of irrelevant sensory stimuli common to the two tasks and particularly to the more challenging N-back task. The research contributes to the development of solutions for the cognitive rehabilitation of patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.

A battery is an important subsystem for electrical energy storage in many military, space and commercial applications. Consequently, in-situ diagnostics for state-of-health estimation of the battery is also critical for enhancing the overall applications' reliability. Montana Tech, in collaboration with the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Qualtech Systems Inc. (QSI), has been working towards the development of advanced techniques for in-situ and real time estimation of a battery's impedance spectrum. INL has shown that the shift of a batteries impedance spectrum strongly correlates to the health of the battery. Two different methods for measurement of the battery impedance spectrum have been developed independently by Montana Tech, NL, and QSI. NL has developed an in-situ system, the Impedance Noise Identification (INI) method of using a random signal excitation to a battery for the purpose of measuring the spectrum of the battery impedance; it is high resolution but not real time. Montana Tech and QSI developed an in-situ system, Compensated Synchronous Detection (CSD) that is very near real time but trades off resolution for speed of measurement. New developments with CSD hold promise of an even faster and more accurate response. A new measurement and data processing technique has been developed, Fast Summation Transformation (FST). The FST technique uses a mathematical uniqueness similar to what was realized with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to enable crosstalk elimination, speed of measurement, and speed of data processing. A prototype hardware system that is compatible with both the INI or CSD algorithms is now under development. Test results are continuously being compared to standardized measurement techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It is expected that the FST algorithm will be fully compatible with this hardware platform. This paper develops the theory of the algorithm and analytically validates it with computer simulations.

Large multipliers are important for cryptographic applications because they need large keys. The ability to modify key lengths, for security reasons, suggests adaptability in multiplication bit-length. However, reconfigurability of multiplication is a difficult task, especially when bit-lengths are large, say over 500 bits. For fixed bit-lengths, much work has been done in the range of 32, 64 or even 128 bits for advanced microprocessors and DSPs. The objective of this work is to design large adaptable bit-length multipliers that can be employed in cryptographic systems. We present a multiplication scheme for higher radix multiplexer-based array multipliers and we suggest a parallelization of the scheme within a single FPGA based implementation. We also suggest a novel partition of the multiplier into folded pipeline stages such that each stage can be instantiated by reconfiguration from its preceding stage during the multiplication operation. The number of partition stages is flexible to meet the FPGA resource constraints. The rationale for pipeline folding is that the multiplier size may preclude a monolithic implementation within one FPGA chip. Using additional FPGAs reduces performance due to interchip communication. Results of large reconfigurable multipliers for 256-bits and over implemented in Xilinx Virtex4 are provided

In this paper an integrated microgrid system is proposed, where a unidirectional DC-DC converter for solar power management, a bidirectional DC-DC converter for battery power management, and a single phase inverter, which is controlled using a single digital processor to deliver a fixed power to the load. Solar power management is realized using Phase shifted full bridge converter battery power management is done using a bidirectional full bridge boost converter. The proposed system is capable to work in different modes managing the power flow based on some factors like availability of grid, availability of solar power, battery SOC etc. The control algorithm of each converter when working in different modes is explained in detail through this paper. The total system is simulated using PSIM simulation tool and performance is evaluated in a 2kW rated hybrid proto model. The simulation results and the results from the proto model confirms the effectiveness of the proposed control architecture.

Home based Telehealth is a combination of communications, imaging, sensing and human computer interaction technologies targeted at diagnosis, treatment and monitoring patients without disturbing the quality of lifestyle. This paper proposes development of a low cost medical sensing, communication and analytics device that is real-time monitoring internet enabled patients physiological conditions. Internet of Things (IoT) network will provide active and real-time engagement of patient, hospitals, caretaker and doctors. Massaging and synchronising the system has been the based focus in this paper, where it applies the suggested algorithm to predict the minimum time period that separates two consecutive bursts of messages and measures the minimum queue sizes for the health care personals nods, to manage the traffic and avoid the dropping of messages. NS2 simulator was employed to simulate the Telehealth environment algorithm.

This paper presents a new algorithm on lower-power survivor path memory implementation of the trace-back systolic array Viterbi algorithm. A novel idea is to reuse the already-generated trace-back routes to reduce the number of trace-back operations. It results in increasing the area of spurious switching activity region, and further reducing the switching activity with gated-clocks during trace-back operation. With the SYNOPSYS power estimation tool, DesignPower, our experimental result shows on the average 40% reduction in power with the same latency at a cost of 23% increase in area against the trace-back unit introduced by Truong et al. (1992). The proposed survivor memory scheme can be applied to the digital communication systems for targeting low power consumption.

Multi-way principal component analysis (MPCA) has been successfully applied to the monitoring of batch and semi-batch process in fine chemical and biochemical industry. However, traditional MPCA is based on the assumption that the separated latent variables must be subject to Gaussian distribution, which sometimes cannot be satisfied. In the present work, a new method combined independent component analysis (ICA) and multi-way principal component (MPCA) approach is proposed without assuming that the latent variables subject to Gaussian distribution. The approach is based on ICA method that finds independent variables as linear combination of MPCA latent variables. Combined ICA and MPCA method is capable of describing non-Gaussian distributed data precisely. This algorithm is evaluated on the penicillin fermentation benchmark process and is compared to the traditional MPCA. The method has significant benefit when the data does not subject to normal distribution.

A vehicle driving simulator is a virtual reality device which makes a man feel as if he drove an actual vehicle. Unlike actual vehicles, the simulator has limited kinematic workspace and bounded dynamic characteristic. So it is difficult to simulate dynamic motions of a multi-body vehicle model. In order to overcome these problems, a washout algorithm which controls the workspace of the simulator within the kinematic limits is needed. However, a classical washout algorithm contains several problems such as generation of wrong sensation of motions by filters. This paper apply new tilt coordination method of an algorithm which gives more accurate sensations to drivers and sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer(SMCSPO) for robust control of vehicle driving simulator. SMCSPO shows high accuracy and performance. These enhance reality of vehicle driving simulator and reduce simulator sickness

Time synchronization and localization are basic services in a sensor network system. Although they often depend on each other, they are usually tackled independently. In this work, we investigate time synchronization and localization problems in underwater sensor networks. We propose a joint solution for localization and time synchronization, in which the stratification effect of underwater medium is considered, so that the bias in the range estimates caused by assuming sound waves travel in straight lines in water environments is compensated. By combining time synchronization and localization, the accuracy of both are improved jointly. Additionally, an advanced tracking algorithm IMM (interactive multiple model) is adopted to improve the accuracy of localization in the mobile case. Furthermore, by combining both services, the number of required exchanged messages is significantly reduced, which saves on energy consumption. Simulation results show that both services are improved and benefit from this scheme.

Virtual MIMO (VMIMO) technique has been envisioned to be an advanced technique for communication systems. In this paper, we consider a 2×2 VMIMO system, where two users are paired together to communicate with the base station simultaneously. User pairing is important for such a system since it determines the channel capacity of each pair of users, the system capacity, as well as the fairness among users. To consider the tradeoff between the system performance and user fairness, we study another concept of stability by formulating the user pairing problem as a symmetric paring game. Using a game theoretical analysis, we proof that the symmetric pairing problem exists a stable pairing solution, which is also Pareto efficient. Based on this result, we further develop a symmetric stable pairing (SSP) algorithm to find out a stable pairing for the VMIMO system. Simulation results show that the stable pairing given by SSP results in a high system capacity and an acceptable fairness.
