The Extremely Large telescope (ELT) is a 39 meters optical telescope under construction in the Chilean Atacama desert. The control software is under advanced development and the system is slowly taking shape for first light in 2028. ESO is directly responsible for coordination functions and control strategies requiring astronomical domain knowledge. Industrial contractors are instead developing the low-level control of individual subsystems. We are now implementing the coordination recipes and integrating the local control systems being delivered by contractors. System tests are performed in the ELT control Model in Garching, while waiting for the availability of individual subsystems at the telescope. This paper describes the status of development for individual subsystems, of the high-level coordination software and of the system integration on the ELT control Model (ECM), focusing on testing and integration challenges.

The Wide Field Imager (WFI) is one of the two instruments of the X-ray advanced telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics (NewAthena) mission selected by ESA. The WFI satellite telescope uses a camera fitted with DEPFET sensors, instrument electronics to control the camera and readout the sensors, as well as additional electronic units to communicate with the spacecraft on-board-computer. WFI successfully passed the instrument system requirement review (I-SRR) in March 2022. In 2023, NewAthena went through a redefinition phase in order to save cost, and on February 2024 the mission restarted again. Currently, a WFI Engineering Model (EM) consisting of the Camera Head Sub-System (CHS) and Detector Electronics Sub-System (DES) is being developed. A Structural and Thermal Model (STM) has also been created as an intermediate development step to gain design insights with respect to thermal and structural properties. The objective of these developments is to gain knowledge on the road to develop the WFI Flight Model (FM). Mechanical and environmental tests will be performed at the X4 and PUMA test facilities of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. In this paper, we present the electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) for WFI and in particular for these tests. The WFI EGSE consist of hardware and software to test the WFI instrument. It provides power control, temperature sensing, time synchronization, an interface to program FPGAs and microcontrollers, and the software necessary to control the instrument and acquire the science data. Dedicated telemetry and telecommand software tools have been developed to communicate via the SpaceWire interface with the WFI instrument. The software architecture and EGSE design trade-offs are also presented.

The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA, has been disassembled and will be transported to Chajnantor Plateau, Chile by the end of 2024 and renamed as Leighton Chajnantor telescope (LCT). LCT's scientific objectives include multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic survey of the galactic plane, magnetic fields in star formation via dust polarimetry, etc. To achieve these objectives, the instrumentation and control systems of LCT need to be upgraded such that its technological criteria can be improved significantly (e.g., 12 mu m surface accuracy, 1 arcsec pointing accuracy, 10x17 W/Hz(1/2) detecting sensitivity). This necessitates a comprehensive reconstruction of the computer, software, and data systems of LCT. In this work, we propose a four-phase reconstruction scheme. The first phase is dedicated to the design of the observation data management system, software system, and the computer and network system. The second phase focuses on infrastructure reconstruction which involves evaluating the computer environment, unifying the operating system across all the computers, and updating and developing the user interface program. The third phase focuses on application systems reconstruction to achieve higher accuracy, faster rotating speed and better capability of disturbance rejection. The final phase includes experiment and implementation of the developed systems on LCT to discover and correct the deficiencies. This work will provide a fundamental framework for upgrading LCT's control systems, thereby enhancing its scientific capabilities.

ESO is in the process of upgrading one of the two FORS (FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph) instruments - a multi-mode (imaging, polarimetry, long-slit, and multi-object spectroscopy) optical instrument mounted on the Cassegrain focus of Unit telescope 1 of ESO's Very Large telescope. FORS1 was moved from Chile to Trieste, and is undergoing complete refurbishment, including the exchange of all motorised parts. In addition, new software is developed, based on the Extremely Large telescope Instrument control software Framework, as the upgraded FORS1 will be the first instrument in operations to use this framework. The new Teledyne e2V CCD has now been procured and is undergoing testing with the New Generation controller at ESO. In addition, a new set of grisms have been developed, and a new set of filters will be purchased. A new internal calibration unit has been designed, making the operations more efficient.

Cerberus will be a new scientific instrument for the alt-az, 1m-class OARPAF telescope in Northern Italy. Currently, the telescope operates with a CCD camera used for imaging and photometry. One of the objectives of the project is to improve this observing mode with a tip-tilt lens for image stabilization up to 10Hz. Moreover, a long-slit spectroscopy at R similar to 5900 and an optical fiber ' echelle spectroscopy at R similar to 9300 observing modes will be included. These addtional two "heads" of Cerberus will be exclusively selected by moving flat 45. mirrors by means of a linear stage placed in a new custom interface flange. The flange will replace the existing one, recovering the included field flattener lens, to ensure optical correction of the imaging channel. We present the already procured COTS hardware, the opto-mechanical design of the interface flange, the results of the Zemax ray tracing and the design of the web-based instrument control software.

The European Solar telescope (EST) is a 4-m class solar telescope that will include a multi-conjugate adaptive optics system (MCAO) integrated in the telescope optical path. Its open-dome configuration implies that the complete telescope will be exposed to wind, having an important impact in image stability and quality. The integration of active optics (AcO) and adaptive optics (AO) in solar telescopes represents a pivotal area of research aimed at enhancing solar observation capabilities. This study delves into the convergence of these two factors. On one hand, the AcO, responsible for real-time adjustments in optical components such as mirrors, to compensate for mechanical deformations and misalignments. On the other one, the AO, designed to counteract atmospheric turbulence and enhance solar image resolution. Diverse strategies are explored for merging these systems, leveraging advancements in high-sensitivity wavefront sensors, advanced control algorithms, and adaptive deformable mirror configurations. AcO will be in charge of mitigate the low frequency- huge distortions, as gravitational and thermal deformations and the quasi-static component of wind and AO will be in charge of high frequency-small distortions, as wind buffeting and atmospheric turbulences. An analysis of the different strategies proposed for control of the AcO loop and its planned actuation ranges is presented in this paper.

Implementing high-order wavefront sensing and control (HOWFSC) algorithms on future space telescopes will require significant computing power. To enable the mission of Habitable Worlds Observatory to directly image exoplanets, we need to improve our understanding of the available performance of radiation-hardened processors. In this work, we describe the testing setup we use to evaluate HOWFSC algorithms, including Electric Field Conjugation and optical modeling on embedded processors. This testing setup enables accurate performance characterization of spaceflight-relevant CPUs and FPGAs in support of HOWFSC algorithms. We interface the embedded processors with a software model of a telescope and coronagraph to perform processor-in-the-loop testing. With this setup, we can test a range of telescope and HOWFSC algorithm configurations that are relevant to the design of future space missions, illuminating the feasibility of in-space HOWFSC algorithm execution.

For giant telescopes using mosaic technology, the flatness of the Mosaic Focal Plane Arrays (MFPAs) is an important determinant of their image quality. In order to measure the flatness through the flat dewar window of cryogenic chamber, a measurement system called differential triangulation measurement system (DTMS) is designed. The DTMS mainly includes four parts: a displacement platform, two laser triangulation sensors, the connecting structure and an optical flat as reference surface. To operate DTMS, an operational software system is developed. The operational software consists of the control and processing software developed by QT, the displacement platform control module realized by PLC and the sensor control module. Through the operational software, users can easily operate the DTMS to scan the MFPAs and calculate the flatness. As for data processing, it is implemented based on the Progressive Sample Consensus (PROSAC) algorithm which can reduce the effect of anomalous data points on flatness calculation. The DTMS and its operational software have been used to measure the flatness of the Wide Field Survey telescope (WFST).
